Hey. Why isn’t the moon landing a national holiday in the US. Isn’t that fucked up? Does anyone else think that’s absurd?

It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! That’s a big deal! I’ve never thought about it before but now that I have, it’s ridiculous to me that that’s not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why don’t we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!

like. aveline becomes captain of the guard after having previously been a soldier married to a templar. her Life essentially is defined by sanctioned, culturally noble and respected violence against those perceived as Other, Deserving by the state she serves. child bride to pirate pipeline isabela (who is on the run because she took on her powerful boss to free slaves he would have profited from the sale of) has been the Other against whom it is Acceptable To Commit Violence (but who is not legally or morally permitted to retaliate) her whole life, and i think this has made her incredibly protective of her right to engage in violence of her own. to me this has always kind of been the heart of their conflict— ideas about who is respectable, who is Allowed, who gets to define what that even means. especially with the context that As captain of the guard, aveline quite actively reinforces her institution’s right to enact violence & the Taboo against the disenfranchised returning it; her guardsman sexually assaults an elven girl, and she not only protects him, but literally (accidentally.) starts a war over her right to prosecute the girl’s brothers for killing him in retaliation when She failed to deliver appropriate justice. ISABELA WAS SOLD AS A CHILD BRIDE. it’s such a gimme. that’s like the main thing that differentiates them and the main difference in their interests. literally how is this not the main thing they’re clashing about?

A non-writer asked me "but where do you get your ideas" and i genuinely did not know how to explain that it's not a place. it's not a website. it's not a folder. it's that i was on the bus and a woman was holding a paper bag very carefully and something about the way she held it made me need to know what was inside and then i needed to know why she was sad about it and then there was a whole person and then there was a whole story and the bus had already stopped and i missed my stop. that's where.

#my dad used to play a game with me when we were in the car where if someone cut him off or was behaving badly in traffic #or we could easily see into their car pulled up beside us at a stop light #he would ask me what I thought was causing the observable behavior #and he always had the most sympathetic explanations for everything #like if someone cut him off and was weaving traffic to get somewhere faster #he didn't just sarcastically joke that he hoped they got to the hospital on time or whatever #he would very calmly just go oh! do you think they're late for their kid's graduation? there's a school district bumper sticker on the car #and then I might say yes or I might say I think they're racing (whatever car they caught up to)#and he'd say oh yeah we do that on roadtrips sometimes when we don't want the cars to be separated #or something similar and then he'd posit a different guess #and sometimes that was the only negative or notable car interaction we had so we would spend the entire rest of whatever 20-30 minute drive #talking about this person's hypothetical graduation or road trip or interview #and wish them luck with whatever it was (usually with an addendum that we hoped they and everyone around them got there safely)#and I really think that heavily impacted how I interact with and think about strangers #when I rode the bus for work for however many years I could easily look around me and try to Sherlock Holmes their day #if you like stories about people just like. watch them and care about them for even 5 minutes a day #you don't have to be objectively correct in your observations you just gotta let the way other people glow into your mind

this was on one of the Anne Rice writing method reblogs and its so good but i know people will take it the wrong way and i want to post it here to preserve and honor it. because theyre right, her writing IS mid. i really really enjoy her work but she is not particularly good at it. and i think that is the most important aspect of conceptualizing of yourself as a creative producer that is performing non-alienated work: how "good" it turns out to be has nothing to do with 1. how much of it you will sell 2. how much people will enjoy it 3. how MANY people will enjoy it and finally 4. the effort you put into making it. developing skill and taste are DIFFERENT tasks from the actual production. let this inspire you

Why do characters in stories where there's some time travel or interdimensional situation always go like "that's not funny" when the traveler character is like "where's dad/mom/friend/etc?" and it turns out that the person in question has died in this timeline/universe?

If someone I cared about was acting disoriented and strange, not recognizing stuff, obviously having troubles placing where they are and/or what the date is, and then asked for someone we both loved who died like a year ago or ten years or whatever, my first reaction would not be "they are playing an incredibly crass and tasteless joke of some sort on me"? My first reaction would probably be, oh shit that's a major sign of dementia and some other serious conditions.

#just once I wanna see one of these scenes involve the character being asked where the dead person is #to go “oh... sweetie I'm sorry.” and try to hug the now confused and panicking MC to comfort them #bc the most obvious reason a young relatively healthy person might say that is disbelief or trauma
