I have not seen any evidence tonsugges they are harmed or die in the process of production. They do regurgitate the nectar as part of the process to concentrate it into honey (an interesting process) but they do not suffer any injury during this process. If they did, the cost to produce honey, which is done naturally as a measure to survive over winter and through times of lower availability, would outweigh the benefits. If you kill several bees to produce enough honey to make one more bee, It makes no sense. Any animal that did that would die, even with human intervention.

Do you have any sources which suggest otherwise? I’d be interested to hear of this (relatively publicly available) information was false or misunderstood.

Bee farmers use whats called a honey maker. It’s a crude devices. It similar to a meat grinder. They force the bees in and grind them up. What comes out is a paste. That paste is later filtered into what we know as honey

Vegans coming after beekeepers is one of my major teeth grinding annoyances. For many reasons, because there’s so many lies. And to go one step further because it’s such a waste. You see, the strongest vegan argument is that they don’t want to exploit animals or take from them without their consent.

… but… Bees consent. NO. I’M NOT KIDDING.

How? Bee hives aren’t kept on leashes. They’re outside, the bees can travel miles every day. They follow their queen. Who is also outside, not on a leash, and can travel miles every day. If she doesn’t like the hive for any reason - for example: it got too hot, too cold, too messy, too filled with sugary stuff and they need more space… then the queen leaves. And with her the hive.

The queen stays in the hive because the hive is the best place to live. Period. Done. End of. If the hive is staying with the beekeeper it’s because the keeper is doing their job correctly and keeping them happy because the bees can, and do, leave bad beekeepers.

Of all the animals we have domesticated as livestock, bees are the ones you can most easily argue are consenting participants in their keeping.

Skinny

I keep getting these posts on my feed from these pro-anorexia people.  You know what?  That’s not a healthy lifestyle.  It’s just not.  You’re starving your body of the nutrients it NEEDS TO SURVIVE.  You are killing yourself by inches.  This is not healthy and it is not something of which you should be proud.  It’s a mental disorder; something I know a lot about.

Me?  I’m fat, and that’s my own problem.  I’m also killing myself by inches. I have a sugar addiction and a caffeine addiction that I refuse to kick, and exercising is nearly impossible with a chronic disease.  My husband is helping me by fixing me healthy lunches, so there’s at least hope.  People who are celebrating eating fewer than 500 calories a day do not need applause and encouragement; they need counselling and a better understanding of how food makes your body work and keeps you alive.  

Is my lifestyle healthy?  No, it is not, but I’m not living with the delusion that what I’m doing is good for me.  I’m not celebrating something that will kill me.  I’m not encouraging others to do the same.  People love you and want you to live.  If you don’t eat, the world will have less light.  Make the world a better place by caring for your meat prison; it’s the only one you have.

The thing is, I honestly believe that pot should be legalized, and that it WILL be legalized within my lifetime, hopefully within the next 5 years.  What’s pissing me off (among the many things today that are pissing me off) is that the government isn’t just saying “yeah, ok, you’re right; this is a thing that’s inevitable so we’re going to go ahead and push this through so you can move forward and live your best life.”  Instead they’re like, “no, we must save you from the Devil’s Lettuce!” and I’m like, “F*ckers, all you’re really doing is losing millions in f*cking tax revenue you could be collecting.  Do us both a f*cking favor and get your heads out of your collective asses.  I’m not a f*cking child anymore and I should be allowed to put anything in my body that I want.  It’s not crack, it’s not cocaine, it’s not heroin; it’s f*cking MARIJUANA!!!!!!  It’s probably less harmful to my body than the sugar I pump into myself on the daily.”

Why James Bond should not be a woman.

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately.  I saw the announcement that the new James Bond is going to be played by a woman of color and instantly I was irritated.  This rant has the bones of what I want to say, but will have to be fleshed out later.

I believe in Empowerment and Representation.  I believe in Equality.  I believe we need to make an effort to create a world where color and gender and identity are descriptors, not dividers.

However.

James Bond is based on a literary character create by Ian Fleming.  He created this character in a time when men were spies and random sexual conquests were acceptable.  He created the Gentleman Spy.  And you know what?  That’s awesome!  It’s an action-adventure story, geared toward men.

The problem I’m having is this: why don’t they create a NEW CHARACTER?  According to “Casino Royale,” the reason he’s know as 007 is because he’s the 7th person to obtain his double-0 status, i.e. he killed a guy.  That means there are 6 other people with double-0 status they could make movies about.  Statistically, at least half of those people should be women.  Instead of taking an icon and flipping it, MAKE SOMETHING NEW!!!!!  You can say “based on the character of James Bond” or something like that if you need to, or you just go out and write something new and different n the same universe and see what happens.

What we really need are new stories, not revamps of old ideas.  This is what women have been dealing with for centuries.  We are not made to fit into a mold made for me.  We are made to fight and stand up for what we believe in and make a difference in the world in ways that only woman can do.

The thing is, not only are perceptions of femininity and masculinity different, so are men and women.  Biologically and psychologically, women experience the world in different ways, and that is something that should be celebrated.  Shoving a woman into a role created for a man is diminishing her.  Is it fair that a man is applauded for having anonymous sex with lots of women while a woman is called a whore?  No, not in the least.  So any woman put in the character of James Bond is instantly going to lose credibility for that one fact alone.

We’re not going to be able to fix the inequalities between genders or races by constantly taking traditionally white male roles and casting women of color into them.  The only way we’re going to disassemble inequality is by creating our own characters with our own strengths and skill-sets and abilities that showcase the differences and makes them beautiful and exciting and sought-after.  Make your characters strong on their own, not fake-strong pretending to be something they are not.

Just to be clear, men and woman are not better or worse.  They are just different.  As are people of difference colors, creeds, and abilities.  And the sooner we embrace those differences and learn to celebrate them in each other, the sooner we’ll be able to move beyond hate and resentment.

Interesting conversation with a coworker.  She’s concerned about the possibility that her 20-something child might need some kind of anti-depressant-type medication to help with PTSD.  She had no idea that I have been taking 2 medications since I was 22.  Antidepressants don’t change who you are.  They make it possible to be who you were meant to be.  I’m fairly social and outgoing and generally well-balanced (for a drama queen).  If it weren’t for the drugs, I’d be dead.  I’d say it was worth the risk.

Before I was diagnosed with depression, I was extremely judgmental about people taking chemicals to alter their personalities.  Then I began dreaming about stepping in front of a bus.  Now I understand that medication does not change who you are as a person.  All it does, if not abused, is make it so you CAN be who you are.  It can give you a little distance from the problems so you’re not always stuck in the dark.

Yes, I advocate for medication, if it is needed.  I now advocate for therapy (yes, it took me 20 years to decide it’s ok to talk to a professional).  If it keeps you going and growing and moving forward, do it.  We have to live in these meat puppet bodies but we don’t have to suffer.
