It amazes me that autistic dudes feel that their autism makes them entitled to be gross and creepy when autistic women manage to get by just fine without being creepy or needing to justify it with our autism.

This post horrifies me.

I have a friend who’s an autistic man. Earlier this week he went for a walk at night. Several different people thought he was creepy and called the police on him. I’ve known him for a long time and I can tell you that he unconditionally wasn’t.  Being autistic in public is enough to get you called gross and creepy, if you’re male.  Not if you’re read as a woman, though. See, I also go for walks at night.  I spin in circles until I can’t walk straight and sprint up and down the stairwells of random buildings and my facial expressions are weird as hell. I have done this at least once a week for the last three years, and no one has ever called the police on me, or even waved campus security in my direction, or even crossed the street to stay away.  Autistic men who do the exact same things as autistic women are in danger for them. Autistic men who do the exact same things as autistic women will be called gross and creepy for them. That’s only one of the repellent things about this post, though. The other one is that autistic women do get called gross and creepy - particularly if they’re fat, particularly if they’re gender non-conforming, particularly if they’re otherwise disabled. They get called gross and creepy for things they do because they are autistic. Do you think you’re helping them by claiming that this experience has never happened to them, that they aren’t a real autistic woman if it did happen to them, that explaining that they’re autistic in response to being called those words is believing their autism ‘makes them entitled’? If your problem is that some autistic men violate boundaries, say that. If your problem is that others excuse their boundary violations by saying ‘but they’re autistic’, or that they expect you to forgive them because they’re autistic, say that. But ‘gross’ and ‘creepy’ are disability-coded words used to attack undesirable people for non-normative behavior, and if you use them against autistic people you are not an autistic advocate.
