ââŚ. what?â
My therapist just told me my problem is that I need to write more fanfiction.
This sounds fake but the logic behind it is actually really interesting? She said obsession with a new fandom triggers quick dopamine release when we consume all this related content--it's easy and addictive.
What we're NOT getting is that 'slow dopamine' that's more sustainable and engaging. That's the kind we get from DOING things that take effort but are ultimately rewarding.
So like, she suggested that writing fic and making fanart are ways to balance the quick dopamine of watching a show/reading fic with the slow dopamine of working at something that takes effort.
Moral of the story is you should engage in the process of creation around your favorite things. You'll feel better for it.
Oh.
OH.
rt so I can remember to write more of my fanfiction (I cannot guarantee I will remember tho :)
I'm like a werewolf but instead of turning into a wolf I'm becoming a tgirl. also I'm also doing it much, much slower. I'm pretty confident the moon still has something to do with it though
she would love this post

I was just gonna leave this in the tags until I saw this note and had to bring my tags out to agree with them
Some questions Iâve found to help when choosing a therapist:
Do you have your own therapist?
Why did you get into this job? (âI just like helping peopleâ is not enough and also a bit of a yellow bordering on red flag for me)
How many people do you typically see at one time and how many are you seeing now?
When can and canât you disclose our conversation with others (also who are these âothersâ)
Where do you stand politically? (Im kinda 50/50 on this question because for me itâs really important as both a trans girl and as someone whoâs issues often stem from capitalism and if I have to explain that capitalism â good then thatâs not gonna fly with me)
For my fellow queers, I know it can be limiting but please please try and find a queer therapist. It helps soooo much. If you canât, ask them about their sexuality/gender regardless. Asking straight/cis people to reflect on their identities is a great way to figure out what color those flags are.
Same goes for any racialized people! Iâm white so I canât speak to it with the experience but I would bet my left AND right hand that having someone of the same culture/lived experience is gonna be such a better environment to do therapy in.
Remember, youâre paying the therapist! I know there are some situations where people can be required to be in therapy but even then you arenât stuck with any one of them.
Listen to your instincts, if things feel not 100% tell them that if youâre comfortable and otherwise finish the session and get outta there!
Therapy is a tool, you wouldnât use a tool that hurt you so donât think you have to keep seeing the same therapist just because youâve been with them this far.
Any good therapist will understand when you tell them that you think you need to look for a different one. If you explain to them the sort of therapist you think you need they might even have some recommendations for you. In my experience at least most therapists and counselors Iâve been to understand that you need someone that you click with. Not everyoneâs approach or focus will work for you.
but⌠theyâre not. Trans is short for âtransitioningâ which is to say you go from one gender to the other. Non-binary people are not transitioning to another gender. Theyâre just not moving from one to another.
trans is not and has never been short for transitioning you dumb hoe
trans is short for transgender dumbass
also for those who donât get it, the creator of the trans flag herself (monica helms, to be exact) has stated verbally, herself, that the white stripe in the flag was for nonbinary individuals + that nonbinary ppl are absolutely trans
if you exclude nonbinary folks and tell us weâre not trans go fuck yourselves
For people who forget: the whole thing of being transgender is that you identify with a gender that isnât your sex/what you were born as. Because no one is assigned nonbinary at birth, being nonbinary is inherently transgender because youâre not cis about it.
this.
I'll never forget the binary trans who tried to (basically) call me a transtrender bcuz I am not binary trans.
So many people, cis AND trans wanna argue about what being transgender means. As if it's something you have to earn, something that's conditional. Something you can't claim to be if you aren't suffering extreme mental and physical discomfort over it. Something you can't claim to be if you aren't medically changing your body to be it. And, most importantly, something you can't claim to be if the gender you identify with isn't the exact opposite of the one you were given at birth.
To be transgender, at the very least (personally), is to have been presented the gender you were assigned at birth and realize that doesn't speak to you. To what degree you experience this, to what extent you go to express this is entirely up to you and is an experience sacred to you.
However; that does not give you the jurisdiction to police a label because the experience is different from yours. That helps no one, and in the end, it'll catch up with you.
