I'm doing my part!!
I feel like it really adds something to know that this coffee shop was right next to the state capitol building. There is a non-zero chance one of these lattes ended up in the senate chamber.
Congratulations, you've unlocked the secret nerd bonus! I actually ended up texting a friend who specializes in the early Roman empire for advice on designing this special.
Honey and almond are pretty self-explanatory, as honey and nuts both figured heavily in Roman desserts. Cinnamon, meanwhile, means dead rich guy. It was insanely expensive to obtain, and the wealthiest of Romans used it to scent funeral pyres, so that the smell of burning cinnamon would cover the scent of cremation.
me as a kid reading Dune: I appreciate the detailed world-building that justifies why everyone fights with swords and has mental powers, but the idea of a Butlerian Jihad against computers is pretty silly
me in 2025, trying desperately to find the three (3) places you need to go to to disable the latest helpful AI assistant that's inserted itself into my work chat and is advising me to do things that would be a breach of federal law: Oh Now I Get It
hey folks if you have an android phone: google shadow installed a "security app".

Just today I got to see a chess book that I remember reading as a little kid. While it didn't give me a lifelong passion for chess, it did give me a lifelong passion for fantasy for its artwork.
The book is "Chess for Young Beginners" from 1975, and here's some of the artwork:
Like, this artwork goes hard. I especially appreciate the colour scheme for the black pieces, with its browns, bronzes, reds and oranges.
This artwork is amazing, evocative, exciting and dramatic. I recommend giving it a look if you have a chance - you can probably scrounge up a PDF of this thing with a bit of searching.
What are some chronic illnesses that can only occur in a fantasy setting?
Partial transformation - mummy rot is slowly turning you to sand, a near miss from a medusa left you with partially stoned body parts, etc.
Hypnotic suggestions from being mind controlled persist after the controllerâs death, causing the victim to occasionally take actions to support the cause of a mind flayer cult that no longer exists.
Repeated demonic possession has left the patient with permanent gaps in their soulâs defenses, causing them to immediately get re-possessed if they go outside a consecrated area.
Post-resurrection trauma as the revived soul remembers an unpleasant afterlife.
Magical healing can get very weird if something is stuck in the wound. Itâll get you back on your feet, but you can get outcomes like âthereâs a chunk of wood fused into your chest because the magic couldnât figure out how to get the arrow out of your chest and just healed it in place,â and this can cause mobility issues or infection vectors down the line.
SHealth tied to something else - the health of a tree, the amount of frost on the ground, the inverse of another personâs, the political power of whoever cursed you
Curse of bad luck - makes any small illness or injury potentially fatal if not treated with anti-curse in addition to anti-infection procedures
Magical reliance on a magical or nonmagical substance - can have any number of side effects
Repeatedly being drunk by vampires can cause an increase in blood production and therefore high blood pressure and related ailments. Can be treated by blood letting.
Thereâs a lot of hybridization happening in a lot of fantasy settings, and thatâs just asking for a lot of people with weird half-dragon genetic disorders. Works out fine for some people, not so much for others.
Parasitized by (insert creature here). If you donât take the correct precautions to keep it dormant it will continue to spread and eventually hatch out/transform you.
Repeated contact with the undead has left you open to their influence - leading to hearing or seeing things that other mortals canât, which can distort or distract from more mundane concerns.
Alternately to being more vulnerable to intrusion, oneâs soul can form a scar that makes helpful magic more difficult to take in.
Sleep disorders that make one fall into an impenetrable sleep at a specific trigger, or to do so for years at a time.
Out of phase with 4D space, oneâs body not connected to itself or anchored in place/time in the usual way. There could be a consistent two hour gap between the things you hear and what has happened, you might clip into the floor as if it was in a different place for you, or you might slide through the material plane in cross section.
Intermittent intangibility.
Split into two people, each with only half your traits.
Stuck in a mirror.
Sensitivity to ambient magic - like the thing where peoplesâ joints ache before a storm but for being near ley lines or people with a lot of magic built up or other magic reservoirs. - The potential for magic, but where the magic has not yet begun.
Heal spell dependency: years of repeated serious injuries being healed by magic causes the body to stop healing naturally. seen often in professional fighters and those with a long career in hazardous occupations.
the forgotten dread: memory modification magic has caused the subjectâs conscious mind to forget some past trauma, but their subconscious still remembers, causing them emotions that they cannot explain or justify ranging from mild discomfort to blind panic when presented with triggers related to the aforementioned trauma. often encountered in cases where the subject has paid an unscrupulous mage to make them forget their past as an ill-advised alternative to therapy.
Psychically Transmitted Memories: the subjectâs mind has been linked to another personâs and, although the bond has since been severed, they have retained memories or thought patterns from the other person that are difficult to distinguish from their own.
Negative Life Syndrome (previously âFalse Life Syndromeâ): seen most often in cases when the subject is exposed to dark magic while in the womb, Negative Life Syndrome leaves the subjectâs life energies tainted by undeath without making them truly undead. common symptoms include intolerance of radiant magic, aversion to sunlight, and the inability to set foot on hallowed ground; rare symptoms include healing from negative energies, sudden necrosis, and the desire to eat flesh or drink blood of living beings.
lycanthropy
Early Life Possessions: the subject was possessed by a spirit or demon during early childhood or infancy, and the possessing presence was in control of them when they learned important milestones, such as how to walk or speak. The subject is now dependant upon the possessing presence to help them perform these tasks or, in cases where the presence has since been exorcised, performs the relevant tasks at a level appropriate for an infant or small child.
Body requires nutrients not found in human food, and you must eat rocks, or gems, or some other alternative. You may or may not have the ability to actually digest these without magical assistance
Awareness of too many dimensions makes it difficult to interact with just this one - either to keep track of conversations, or walk to specific locations without ending up on another planet instead
Telekinetic psychosis - delusions tend to physically affect those around you (but HIGH chance for ableism in this one!)
you have flare-ups where your skin tends to slough off and be replaced by some other substance
After sharing life energy with a dying loved one, youâre now both trying to survive off one personâs supply. Like chronic fatigue, but if your loved one gets too big of a bruise you wonât have the energy to get up until it heals
living in reverse
stuck at a certain age
supersenses lead to constant overstimulation
youâre a changeling, and if you donât have someone who loves you close by, youâll turn back into sticks and mud
Perhaps they ought not to have eaten the dragon. There had been people objecting to it at the time. Surely such meat was poisonous. Perhaps it was even an affront, an insult to some intangible order of nature they ought to honour.
But the city was starving, the siege had gone on too long, and the king's troops were still a week's march away. The scorched earth would be fertile again in time, but right now it was barren. Right now there were mouths to feed. So they changed their crossbows for butcher knives and got to work.
None of the royal commanders asked any questions that could not be answered. After all, their aid had come shamefully late. The dragon's horned skull made a noble gift, a fitting tribute from a triumphant city to its humbled king. Who would have thought to question them?
And none of the townsfolk spoke up, when the first golden-eyed babes were born. Children who grew up barefoot and fearless, clambering over the city's patched and rebuilt roofs like they had no notion of falling, with a strange glitter to their skin when the sunlight hit it just so. No one breathed a word about dragons.
Because soon enough there were deft, young hands taking loaves straight out of the oven, heedlessly lifting iron from the forge, plunging into boiling laundry water. And some of them more wondrous still, wild, warm-skinned youths, with inexplicable knowledge and peculiar remedies.
A blessing, their families said proudly. A blessing after so much hardship. Which it was, in its way. This city would never fear dragon fire again.
why don't people in zombie apocalypse stories ever just wear suits of armor? you think any zombie is gonna get their shitty rotting jaws through this?
I'm gonna rip and tear my way through the zombie apocalypse completely unharmed because none of the undead hoards will be able to get through my plate mail
everyone else is like "oh we gotta stay inside the most secure places possible and never leave" and I'll be storming through the wastelands in my bloodstained suit of armor, blasting the Doom (2016) OST and plowing my way through waves of the undead. one of them tries to bite me but his shitty rotting teeth don't even leave a dent in my armor before I turn his head into paste. I'll be unstoppable until I die of dehydration or something like an idiot
this goes along with my other pet peeve about zombie apocalypse stories, namely: why does no one ever think to ride a bike?Â
bikes are quiet- if the zombies react to loud noises, they wonât hear you on a bike the way they might hear you in a car. bikes donât need gas, meaning you wonât be stranded if you run out. bikes are much, much easier to maintain than a car- thereâs no computer that can short out, no fiddly engine bits that could kill you if you mess with them wrong. you can learn how to maintain a bike with a couple weeksâ worth of classes. almost every adult knows how to ride a bike, and without cars on the road, itâd be much safer to do.Â
what iâm saying is
American author Mark Twain (b. 1835) lurches from his grave only to give you a massive thumbs up and die again
Mark Twain essentially invented the genre of a bystander sent into a time-travel sci-fi plot just to get someone to draw this image for him. And today we can simply search for such a picture. It is a time of wonders
#this post has everything. zombies. knights. bicycles. knights on bicycles. mark twain.

reminder to worldbuilders: don't get caught up in things that aren't important to the story you're writing, like plot and characters! instead, try to focus on what readers actually care about: detailed plate tectonics
@dragonpyre any chance you could elaborate on this
I grew up learning about land formations. Seeing fictional maps that donât follow the logic and science of them makes me upset
What are the most common sins youâve seen relating to this? I wanna know
Mordor.
Why is the mountain range square. How did the mountain range form. Why is there one singular volcano in the center. Why does it act like a composite volcano but have magma that acts like itâs from a shield. If itâs hotspot based volcanic activity why is there only one volcano.
And then the misty mountains!!!! Why isnât there a rain shadow!! And why is there a FOREST where the rain shadow should be!!!!!!!!
So what is a rain shadow?
Wind blows clouds in from the sea, but mountains are so tall the clouds can't get past 'em, so you get deserts on the windward side of mountain ranges because clouds can't get there to water the land, or do so only very rarely.
Oh yeah nothing is more annoying than fantasy maps that can't get mountains, rivers and rain shadows right.
May I recommend my new favorite tool: Mapgen4. You start with a random seed and then add mountains, valleys, shallow water, or oceans as you like. You can adjust the wind direction to make wind shadows off the mountains fall where you want. You can adjust overall raininess to make the rivers larger or smaller, or have more or fewer tributaries. It works best for small, isolated landmasses (think islands more than continents) but as thereâs no scale bar and itâs all slightly abstracted anyway you can do whatever you want with it. Iâve only just started playing with it but itâs SO FUN.
The only retail job I miss is being the cashier at a local Hardware Store in a small town surrounded by other small towns, because I was essentially a high fantasy GuildMaster.
I worked there three summers in a row, and every laborer from every nearby town would come there for whatever supplies they needed, and man could they gossip like there was an Olympic medal for it.
At 8 AM, every morning, every plumber, roofer, electrician, and landscaper in the county was at the door waiting for me to unlock it, and theyâd come back throughout the day.
I knew every tradesman in a 30 miles radius, and I knew too much about everyone in town because of, like I said, the tradesman gossip. Itâs shocking that people basically tune out an entire person in their living room and say whatever they want, because they donât see the guy fixing their light fixture as real somehow.
Then your average citizens, the townsfolk, would come in to ask for labor recommendations. The cashier at the local hardware store is a god among yelp reviews.
A woman needs her roof repaired. A man wants central air installed in his 100 year old house. Someone needs to break into a safe they inherited without the combination.
And I would make recommendations. Iâd take down names and information so when a plumber I liked walked in an hour later, I could say, âcome here, I have a job for youâ like I needed them to clear a village of Redcaps.
There is no difference between your local mom-and-pop hardware employee and Greed Karga sending the Mandalorian on bounty hunting jobs.
If Geralt of Rivia walked in, I could have found him something to do.
I believe all plumbers dual-wield drain snakes and arcane magic, because youâd be surprised how often Liches come up in septic tank repairs.
You can belong to a monster huntersâ guild and a weldersâ union, if you have the time. Always good to diversify your portfolio.
On the one hand, I totally get why they got rid of the two year time jump and the changes that resulted as a consequence. But on the other hand, I really wanted to see this in Part Two.
Saaaaaaaame
Just this week in games:
- EA laid off 700 workers
- Sony laid of 900 workers
- Rockstar announces in-person work mandates for all employees (a 'soft layoff' that will force some staff to quit, which likely means that actual layoffs are forthcoming)
In 2023 6,000 games workers were laid off. Now in 2024 over 10,000 workers have been laid off, and there's still 10 months to go.
Not to be hyperbolic, but I think this is perhaps the worst year for video games ever if we're measuring by number of layoffs.
PlayStation, Electronic Arts, and Microsoft are the latest companies to announce cuts
I really feel the need to make it abundantly clear to people who are like "yeah this could get really bad" or "could this be a crash?".
I need to emphasize: This is currently incredibly bad and not normal for the games industry. This is currently a post-pandemic crash.
Rolling mass layoffs at every major studio is not standard video game industry behaviour no matter how bad the industry sounds.
The population of an entire town's of people in video games has lost their jobs in the span of two months and that number is growing every week. As a reminder, job hunting in games usually takes upwards of 2 months, depending on how lucky you are, so most of these people are likely still without jobs and may not ever work in games again.
My LinkedIn Feed is a near constant churning of new "I am seeking employment because I just got laid off" posts, by people I know who have worked all over the industry and have plenty of experience. Every week someone I recognize loses their job for no reason.
It's not the end of the world or games or anything, but I need people to understand this is currently a very huge and not normal game industry problem. It's a crash and it's happening.
From a TA perspective, the current cycles of layoffs are partially a staff planning and team size issue. As AAA games grow in scope and size, more devs are needed for each part of the project. Since games are created in a somewhat assembly line fashion, you might need 1000 people at the start of the project but only 250 at the end. So if you are a massive studio and don't plan your headcount according to multiple project timelines, you're going to end up with excess people that will need to be laid off. Additionally, as the cost and time of producing a game increases, the fewer games a studio will work on. This leads to cyclical hiring and layoff patterns. Imo, this will likely continue as a pattern for the large studios.
On the flip side, mid and small sized companies tend to not have this issue. Employees aren't as specialized and are useful throughout the entire game development process.
For those looking to get into the games industry, as a TA professional, my recommendation would be to develop a wide range of skills, avoid the big studios, and either get into a mid sized company or work with a company who specializes in outsourced work.
Elden Ring new dlc is here so today I'm sharing with you some fanarts I did.
As always thanks for your support prints are available as well as HD files on kofi ;)

I like how Romans talked about domestic spirits. They're kinda dead ancestors, kinda previous occupants, kinda local nature spirits, kinda the house itself. There's lots of different types but they all kinda blend and overlap into an amorphous class of spiritual fauna.
Like the place is haunted but the ghost is also protective of the store and he's not entirely a ghost he's also just the spiritual manifestation of the structure itself and the elves that keep stealing socks. It's like they're each organs in a larger body with their own sentience.
