@ragnarokk-n-roll
I’m remembering an old discussion where an interview with the author regarding the POV’s was brought up – something about writing from the POV of the person who is the most invested and/or has the more to lose? I could be misremembering, but… while that might be true in general (there are certainly POV where we’re inside the head of the character who is the most impacted by something or is having the biggest breakthrough or something specific about the scene is the most related to that character’s progress etc) suddenly I’m thinking that sometimes, the opposite happens…
When emotions are running high, sometimes we see things from the POV of the person who is the least invested, or the person who has the most clarity because emotionally, they are the most calm – sometimes making the readers see emotional moments from an outsider’s POV. “Stepping outside” like this could help the writer advance the story in places where the character’s emotions might be so complicated the writer herself is not quite sure how to describe their feelings (or even what exactly they’re feeling). By putting the reader in the shoes of the person experiencing the most clarity, it could also help the reader to experience the scene with “more clarity.”
For example, when Simon and Baz are “forgiving each other” they exchange a long look. It’s charged with many things, but we aren’t privy to their emotions then. It’s a moment so private even the readers are excluded – iirc we see this from Shepard’s POV, the person who knows less about the whole situations.
We do see Simon’s POV when he murders the goat that was harassing Baz (I’ll be damned and drawn and fucking quartered etc… what a line!) but we notably don’t see it when he loses his whole fucking mind and tries to murder Lamb (seeing it from the outside makes Simon looks even more deranged – from his POV the dude is dangerous and untrustworthy and he’s seeing him “jumping his boyfriend,” he doesn’t hear that Lamb is getting so close to whisper “a warning”) (hilariously the danger Lamb is warning about is Simon). Shepard is by far the most collected (and the least “invested” emotionally while Simon and Baz are going through it – and Penny in a way). We “see” Simon screaming “I’m his boyfriend!!!” through his eyes.
Penny is sick as hell and vomiting all over the place towards the climax in CO, and she’s not “the least invested,” but she’s by far the most collected when the mage, Simon and Baz are all sort of fighting – hence her being the one to have the clarity to come up with a way to stop it all with “Simon says.”
I remember the rat date’s conversation being used as an example of the POV going to the person who is the most invested/cared the most, but I actually think it’s the opposite. Sure, there are things being said here that Simon might want to downplay or dismiss and/or not think about ever that Baz is going to take very seriously and want to talk about and deal with (not unlike how Simon can be dismissive over physical injuries or putting himself in danger while Baz is not fucking around with that).
However, while this is a scene where they’re both a mess… Baz is the most collected out of the two. Yes, he’s making a mess and choking all over rat’s blood because he cannot fucking believe his ears (and not necessarily for the same reason the reader might not be able to believe their goddamn eyes – “I thought you knew” “I did. Mostly” or something is about assumptions and expectations, Baz expected this, Simon expected Baz to expect this, Baz is not actually surprised by the fact that it happened, the real surprise is Simon saying “I wasn’t attracted” “no, it doesn’t mean I was attracted” “I didn’t feel shit” and even “nothing compares to you”). But Simon is worse: he’s self-harming, kicking walls and pulling on his hair, growing more and more frustrated (Baz externalizes his own mess by making a literal mess with the blood, but inside he maintains enough control and clarity to focus on observing Simon’s emotions and reactions, as opposed to getting caught up in anything that would distract him and render him unable to do that, he keeps himself present in the conversation, and his words give Simon something to anchor himself to process and reach answers). Simon’s head would be a far messier and more uncomfortable place to be during this conversation. Simon is the one having a big moment of processing and starting to embrace certain realizations…. and we see this from the outside. His internal process is left a mystery. Something like this invites the reader to feel in the blanks.
(I started writing this post with the counter to the way the rat’s date example was used in mind, but now I’m also thinking that this choice in POV specifically puts the reader in a place to be challenged, because we’re in the shoes of someone with assumptions that are not entirely right or even dead wrong, that Simon is fighting)
Blog merge!
For the sake of making things simpler for myself, I've decided to merge this blog with my dark academia one. Everything in my queue on @ragnarokk-n-roll will be transferred to the new-and-improved @fallen-angel-adam-frankenstein, so to all my twenty followers, if you'd like to migrate over there I'll still be reblogging Sandman and Carry On stuff, just throwing in some classic lit, etc. with it.
favourite sandman comic moments: whenever delirium is drawn like this

no one else in the comics gets this treatment! they're usually drawn pretty realistically even in the background
but no
delirium is going to 0.0
Somebody mentioned in a tag on one of my posts the scene where Marco Animorphs is showering after antmageddon and he finds an ant stuck to his hip by the pincers where it presumably was trying to bite him in half when he was an ant and then it died from him becoming very big very fast and I feel like that scene, and the scene where Cassie finds a sliver of a sentient person’s flesh between her teeth while she’s flossing and then flosses until her gums bleed, really deserve recognition in the literary canon. Applegate deserves an award. There should be a TV Trope named after whatever the fuck that is. Like fridge horror but diegetic. Bathroom horror. Your bedtime bathroom routine as an opportunity for personal confrontation with the violent detritus of the dead which lingers in and on your body even after you have ostensibly stripped yourself of weapons and healed over all your wounds.
Applegate said I know that the adolescent experience involves a lot of being alone in a room with your body (often but not always the bathroom) and becoming aware of something incredibly alarming and, hear me out, what if that thing was either uncontrollable weirdly gruesome bodily metamorphosis or physical fragments of things and people you’ve killed. And whoever she was in a pitch meeting with said sorry lady I wasn’t listening to you but you can just put whatever you want in these books, no one cares as long as you meet deadline
The way the fandom treats Lucienne is frankly super gross like. She is one of the most important characters in the show and she gets relegated to caricatures and stereotypes and treated like a background character in her own fucking tag
Things Lucienne is NOT:
-Dream’s butler
-His servant
-His maid
-His mommy
-His sassy black friend
Things Lucienne IS:
-The royal librarian of the Dreaming
-His second in command
-His counsel
-The one in charge when Dream is off doing shit
-The closest thing he has to a best friend
-The glue that holds the entire Dreaming together
Well I never had the chance to watch Avatar the Last Airbender ever…. which sucks, but.. now it’s on the net flix so guess what ya boi’s doing !!!!!!

Katara just made a direct callout post about me this isn’t allowed. Ma’am that isn’t allowed. She basically dished out rhetoric I give to other people all the time. I’m not the therapist friend per se but I am like… the shoulder-to-lean-on friend a lot of the time so hearing “..But now you’re not letting yourself feel anything. I know sometimes it hurts more to hope. And it hurts more to care. But you have to promise me that you won’t stop caring” hit me way harder than I thought it would now that it’s coming back at me, and now I Am crying. I Am

Okay so does the island like… call upon people who are ‘lost’ in a few ways and make it so they are trapped there without knowing how until they find themself or some shit? It’s oddly specific speculation but like. I like the idea of an island that just fucking forces you to go to therapy

I have NEVER cried over a reunion in a show or book or movie before now. Ever. Atla is breaking all kinds of records for me and I am having Emotions,
You know what? in a way I was right about it being therapy island
I got to see the absolutely stunning visuals and sweet conclusive scene of the end of this show… while shirtless in a dark pantry at 1am
Feel like I just speedran the whole series, op, thank you.
Always reblog the speed run ATLA post
Every time a girl breaks up with Dream:
Dream: Desire I'm in my gallery. Desire it's me. Desire did you do this to me. You did didn't you. Desire pick up
Desire [totally did it]: Nope. you're just an asshole. bye.
Dream: Elder sister I'm in my gallery. Elder sister pick up. Be real with me here. Am I the asshole
Death: Dream my sweet brother. I love you so much. You were 100% the asshole
Ah yes my favorite dynamic, the humanoid manifestation of a concept out of human understanding x just a guy™ but not just any guy, a history teacher, oh! and he is immortal
Something based on that unpublished Hob and Dream sketch that's been going around lately
this might be a controversial opinion idk, but i feel like a lot of people assign more intent to dream's ending than was actually there
like. yes his death was in part a suicide, i'm not saying it wasn't, and i've talked a lot about the reasons and motivations behind that already. but i've seen a lot of responses to my posts lately talking about how dream knew this would definitely happen and he had a plan and was doing [x] thing because he knew it would lead to his death (or the more gentle version that he didn't plan it, but saw it coming and did nothing to stop it)
which. doesn't feel like an accurate description of what happened?
because he tried to stop the kindly ones plot. he genuinely did
he knew that the furies wouldn't be persecuting him out of nowhere, that's unlike them, there's enough nuance in this situation that something else has to be spurring them. which is true. lyta invoked the furies for revenge against dream, and the blood debt is enough of a technicality that they had the power to back her
so dream goes after lyta - stop her, stop the furies. but he's met with thessaly, who predicted this, and has protected lyta inside a ritual circle, which dream can't cross. she taunts him about it (bc this kind of magic is one of the few places mortals have more power than endless), and when he asks why, she says she wanted to hurt him
alright. no stopping the furies. but dream knows they will have to meet him face to face if they want to do anything about this, so as long as they meet him in the dreaming, that's his seat of power, they won't be able to act against him in any real capacity. he'll just have to wait them out, until they tire of this or something happens to lyta
there's one more caveat though - if he leaves the dreaming willingly during their attack, he cedes that seat of power, he won't be the master of the dreaming anymore, it'll belong to them. and that's the last thing he wants, so he tells delirium when she asks that he can't go with her, he has to stay here
nuala is the breaking point. because he has still been dealing with suicidal thoughts for centuries, they're not new and they didn't go anywhere, he's just really good at ignoring those thoughts in favour of his actual responsibilities. and while he didn't intend to die here, he's more exhausted than ever, he's lost in grief over his son, and for the first time, doesn't have the strength to push those thoughts down. nuala calls him from the dreaming, because he promised her any request, and it's a good enough excuse and he's tired enough that for a moment his subconscious wins that battle
and from there he's stuck. he tries to go back to the dreaming and fix it, but it's not his anymore. so he's left with only two choices - leave, abandon all this, go somewhere far away and stop caring about everyone you left behind and what the furies may do to the dreaming in your absence - it's no longer your problem. or he can acquiesce to their demands, lyta's call for revenge
and given who dream is, that was never any kind of choice.
i think people assume he planned it all because of one of these lines
but that's the thing. when the only thing keeping you going is the fact that suicide would be the most terrible horrible act you could possibly commit (this is someone who values his responsibility over anything else! he is dutiful! the whole point is he cannot willingly abandon his post!), you definitely haven't made a plan, and you're never going to. it's an escapist fantasy that sits at the back of your mind, that's all
the things death is drilling him about here are his decision with nuala and the fact that he never chose to leave, even when he got in way over his head, that's all she questions him about in this conversation
and i don't think he's lying in his response to her
yes, he's been 'making preparations' for a while, but those are things like ensuring daniel's ascendancy, tying up loose ends with people, actions that don't lead to anything. he doesn't have to die just because he did those things, those are just emergency precautions. and they make him feel better to do, because he gets to indulge in that fantasy without doing anything about it. he can't be blamed for this, they don't mean he wants to leave, he's going to keep doing his job forever because he has to
but you know. just in case. he's just being smart about it. that's what he can tell himself, anyway
and the reason why this distinction matters so much to me is, dream really tried. we see as early as season of mists that this is what his internal monologue is like so much of the time, given the slightest excuse to give up, in this case literally just the journey between the dreaming and hell, and some part of him yearns to just abandon everything
but he tells it no. he's been telling it no for centuries. this has been a constant fight to stay alive and he's been doing it! it's not been easy, but he's been putting in so much unnoticed work to keep everything going, to not give up. and one moment of weakness that ended up being his downfall shouldn't get to erase that
and when we say that he planned this the whole time, or that he knew this would happen and let it, we're not really appreciating just how much he tried
I love them my bad
yeah this is one of those posts where you read it, scroll down, then go wait shit thats fucking hilarious and scroll back up to reblog
