HC that when Virgil is having a bad day, he puts on his old jacket because it’s comforting.

Ok but what if he wears the old jacket as a way of punishing himself?

The new one symbolizes the change in his place, it represents them forgiving him for all his past mistakes and accepting him for who he is and what he does.

Most of the time he feels he doesn’t deserve that.

He feels it when he sees the pain in Roman’s eyes after striking down another idea, he feels it when his voice over powers Logan again and hears how the teacher’s voice sounds frantic and desperate and how it almost breaks in trying to make Thomas listen to reason, he feels it seeing the way Patton’s face twists in pain.

And Virgil specially feels it in the way Thomas says “it’s okay, Verge… you’re just doing your job” in a gentle voice that is trying to be assuring but Virgil could see that Thomas is tired, so tired and why can’t Virgil just let him sleep?

In moments like those he wears the old jacket because it feela fitting.

Because the purple one belongs to Virgil.

And during those moments, he’s nothing but Anxiety.

What if the others see it and misunderstand it.

They think he wears it because its comforting; soft, safe, familiar; in the midst of a great many changes that have been taking place.

They see him in his old hoodie and maybe they recall that he was being a bit harsher before he put it on, so they mistakenly conclude that it must be a comfort object to him.

They don’t realize its self inflicted punishment. 

And because they think its helping him, they don’t mention it. After all, why call him out? Why risk making him uncomfortable about indulging with his comfort object?

Then one day, it gets rough. Virgil hits a low point. He’s obviously tense and stressed and just a massive bundle of anxiety that quivers like an exposed nerve. He lashes out and it hurts the others, but they don’t really blame him because they can see now why. 

They want to help him. They want to comfort him. Virgil is biting out some scathing remark or another, but Patton interrupts with an oh so innocent question.

“Do you want your old hoodie?” Summoning the object and holding it out to him.

Patton isn’t sure what response he was expecting, but it certainly isn’t the one he got.

Virgil freezes, all the blood draining from his face, his anger fizzling out in a heartbeat. It’s one thing to cast himself into the old role. But for one of the other’s, for PATTON to do it. Its a whole other world of hurt. 

Nonetheless, he takes it from Patton’s hand. He gingerly removes the new one, setting it gently aside like it is the most precious thing in the world. Robotically, he slides back in to the old one. The weight settles on his shoulders. Not just the jacket, but everything it represents. The hurt and the hurting and the loneliness and just all those years playing the villain. And now that’s what they are seeing him as again, too.

Virgil hangs his head, shame and pain mingling with the anxiousness. He can’t look at them. He says, “I’m sorry,” and something in him just breaks. Suddenly he’s crying and all he wants to do is take the jacket off, shed that old life and leave it behind along with all the pain and behaviors that come with it. But he can’t. He can’t because the jacket is just a symbol. The root of the problem is inside him. The root of the problem IS him. He can’t escape the past. It will always be there, waiting for him to mess up again. And the jacket will always be there to remind him of the person he used to be, the person he is doomed to always, eventually, become again.

Suffice it to say, the others are shocked. Virgil has never broken down like this in front of them before. He’s curling in on himself bawling his eyes out, the only truly coherent thing coming out of his mouth is a garbled string of apologies and “I want to be better,” and “This isn’t who I want to be anymore.” It takes a bit before anyone snaps out of it and starts trying to console him, but eventually they do. 

Logan is probably the first to realize the error. He may not be a feeling, but he at least has a basic understanding of them and he always was the best at putting two and two together. He tells Patton to take the old hoodie off and Patton, though confused, obeys. Logan is already ready to settle the new hoodie back around Virgil. 

Virgil is bewildered, but Logan is talking to him, telling him that that is not who he is and that the past is irrelevant to the present. This is who you are. You are Virgil. You are our protector. You are family. Sometimes you mess up, as do we all, and we forgive you. Through Logan’s comforting words, Patton and Roman catch on. It’s a heartbreaking realization, but the instantly get to work, offering their own kind and comforting words.

Eventually, Virgil manages to calm down. Once he can stand it, they all have a long overdue discussion. Patton and Roman offer the emotional support and the passionate proclamations. Logan reminds Virgil that messing up is okay and having a bad day does not make one a bad person. Also, self punishment, in any form, is very detrimental to one’s psyche. It’s a hard, emotional discussion, but its an important one to have.

A few days later, Roman hosts a bonfire in his realm. They each take something  from their past, a piece of themselves they want to let go, and they burn it.

Logan lets go of an old puzzle he could never manage to solve. 

Roman lets go of an ancient love letter to the first person Thomas ever had a crush on.

Patton lets go of a single sticky note, old as the Dad himself, that simply said: ‘Smile.’ 

Virgil let go of his hoodie. And watching it burn, it didn’t fix anything. The past was still there. Virgil knew he would still have his bad days. But that’s okay.

It was just symbolic anyway.

Sighing, I picked up another clock. It’s hands were held still, perfectly on 3:57. “I know already.”

Frisbeeing it out, it didn’t go very far before smashing to a rock. The glimmer of a pocket watch caught my eye. 3:57.

“Will you just leave me in peace?”

I kicked sand over it. A wristwatch was carried up on a wave.

“I told you, I know. You don’t have to keep doing this!”

The wristwatch was crunched under my heel, just in time for another, bigger wave to wash in. Scrambling away from the shore, I sighed at what it left. A grandfather clock. I didn’t even need to look at the hands. Three fifty seven.

Sitting on its damp surface, I rested my head in my hands. Do other people go through this? Is this what it’s like for everyone, or just for me?

i decided to go and walk along the beach today mainly to see the strange watches and clocks each one has a different design so i’ve been collecting them, some of them are antiques and sold them for a lot of money all though i am confused is why they all have the same time and they were in 24 hour time as well and i’d never seen any clocks with 24 hour time on them, i might not know why but i would like to know, i saw a plastic bag that looked like it had objects in it.

 i walked over and picked it up and looked inside seeing a bunch of clocks, smiling i walked back home and set the bag on the table and took all the clocks out, they weren’t dirty or wet or broken but that happens almost everytime now so it’s not that surprising anymore, some were just ordinary, one had a weird pattern that made my head hurt.

 i saw the last clock and picked it up and walked to my room before sitting on my bed ‘hmm” i mused the time as always was ‘23:19′ “the clock looks like a kitty” i chuckled before gasping a little, the dream i had when i was younger about a big furry monster with purple poka-dots and a small green monster with one eye named “mike wazowski”  and a scary lizard monster that i was scared of until i beat it up with a bat i chuckled at the thought. 

i heard tapping at my closet door, i looked up and set the clock down, it was just a dream right i mean they came out the closets and doors but it couldn’t be them right?

i opened the door and gasped at what i saw

‘i Elizabeth roman will do this, i will complete this challenge’ i think over and over again as i keep drinking the milk, i’m alomst done, people have gathered around to see me, what am i doing?, i’m attemping to drink 2 galloons of milk in under two minutes, it’s risky but i’ve been preparing for it i’ve always wanted to do this since a few years ago when i learned about it and i was so excited to do it i wanted to be the best and i will be.

i’m a quater of the way down on the second gallon i hear people cheering “chug! chug! chug!”, i get the feeling of vomiting and coughing at the same time but i surpress it, i’m half way finsihed and i have 30 seconds left i can do this.

the coughing feeling comes back and my body almost reacts to cough but i stop it and keep drinking the milk i need to finish it, i have a quater to go and i have 14 seconds left, i take a quick deep breath and let it out before drinking the rest finsihing it with 1 second to spare. 

i take a deep breath sort of like a gasp and cough a bit before smiling and turning to the crowd and raising my arms up in victory, everyone starts clapping and cherring and i take it all in, my eyes land on one girl though with red curly hair and glasses with a few freckles on her cheeks and hazel eyes, she’s a little taller then me by a centimeter or two and she looks gorgouse i look at the time on my wirst and see it’s gone down.

i smile sadly i’ve accepted it and i’m glad i get to meet my soulmate before i die, i walk up to her and i’m just left speechless i wish more then anything to spend more time with her, i look to her times she still years and years to go before she passes away, she looks to her time to see her soulmate time is gone down to 0, she looks up at me and smiles, there are no words spoken as none can be

i smile and hug her and she immediatly hugs back

“i’m glad i got to meet you finaly” i whisper in her ear holding back the tears, “me too” she reply as we let go of the hug, i glance at how much time i have left, only 20 seconds left i slightly panic but calm down 

“you’re gorgoues” i compliment and she smiles and blushes while saying “thank you”

i lift her chin up and soft press my lips against hers before pulling back

i go to say somethign else but i start to cough and i feel like i’m choking, my gut is on fire and i’m in pain, vomit a stars rising in my throat but it stays there it won’t leave my throat and onto the ground, i’m suffocating, my hands go around my neck aas a natural rection, i’m trying to breat , no matter how prepared i was for it it’s still scary and it hurts so much, people are crowding around me and everythings blurry, i have tears in my eyes from the pain but i can tell people are trying to help in some way but it all ends as i see black tho i wish i had gotten to say “i love you”
