“Luka has no personality” you say?
Oh my god, you’re soooo right!
What do we even know about him from his intro in season 2??? Besides that he is an easygoing person who meditates and loves rock music and plays guitar and has a very grunge aesthetic and immediately connected with Marinette because he was nice and they had things in common??? Nothing!
And the first time we see him in season 3 (Reflekdoll, episode 5 in production order), we only get this moment between Luka and Juleka where he shows he’s a loving and supportive older brother, who probably had to grow up fast and step up since his father isn’t in the picture. Where’s the complexity in that?
And oh my god, Silencer. The only things we learned from that are that he has a strong sense of justice, and got angry enough when Marinette (the girl he supports the creative talents of, and loves) was threatened, to the point where he got akumatized. Not sure what exactly we’re supposed to take from that!!
And don’t even get me started on Desperada. Not getting angry with Marinette because he’s patient and understands that feelings are complicated? Putting his life in danger in order to deter the villain away from his friends? Stepping up as a new superhero to save his family and friends no matter what? Ultimately leading to the team’s victory by being observant and coming up with a good plan? Puh-lease.
And how about that season finale? He only shows that he works to help support himself and his family, that he’s musically inclined and composes songs based on individual people he meets, and supports Marinette unconditionally when she’s stressed without asking questions. Come on now! No character insight anywhere!
Okay, I’m done with the sarcasm. Luka deserves genuine appreciation.
Seriously. He is such a good person, and we’ve had many instances where we’ve had insight on his personality, even if it wasn’t always direct characterization (I know thinking is hard sometimes). Luka has a personality, and we will see more of it in future seasons. But we have plenty information now, and it’s impossible to say that he’s “not an interesting character” or “all we know is that he loves Marinette.” Luka is a pure soul who has genuine feelings for Marinette (Hawkmoth even said so) and he’s proven his worth and complexity every time he’s been on screen.
In this house, we stan Luka.
