read an AITA earlier today about a guy who would walk his female friend home to her dorm very often UNTIL she rejected his romantic advances*, then when she asks him to walk her home bc she's drunk and feels unsafe he says no. Men in the comments were clamoring to insist he "didn't owe her anything" and that she was a deceptive harpy who wanted to use her #femaleprivilege to get "special treatment"

and idkkkkkkk that could never be me sorry!! wym you don't care about your friends safety and are willing to mildly inconvenience yourself to ensure they are okay? no compassion or care for the people in your life but its an "epidemic" when you don't have friends? lol

I had a senior, bearded, geology professor once that was doing a lecture on the Abyssal Plain. It's mostly flat and dark and cold and there's no food. Things live down there widely spread out, solitary lives. But once in a while there is a whalefall. A dead whale sinks to the bottom suddenly there is tons of food in this one spot. It will be immediately covered in decapods and isopods, and fish and worms, all sorts of life that rushed to this one spot because of the whalefall. He stopped for a bit, then said, "I wonder what their religion is like". We all stopped, caught off guard by this sudden subject change. "I mean there they are all alone in the cold and dark when suddenly this mana from heaven drops on top of them. And with it all these new friends. It must be astonishing." Then he paused and then after a moment went back to discussing the nature of the silicious ooze and how to spot it in the geological record.

When Sahrawi film-makers and journalists attempt to document everyday life under Moroccan occupation, they can often end up in prison cells. For the Moroccan regime, a camera in the hands of a Sahrawi threatens its official narrative that Western Sahara is part of Morocco. In contrast, when celebrated international names in the film industry wish to capture an ideal picture for an epic journey, and decide that our land is exotic enough to shoot the desired scenes, they are welcomed, escorted and granted access by the same authorities that usually deny us that right. [...] Nolan’s choice to film in an occupied territory highlights the extractivist practices embedded in the western film industry. Western cinema has often been complicit in mining stories and immaterial culture from the global south at a scale no smaller than the material resources mined by the western colonial industrial complex. International film crews parachute in, shoot our faces, clothing, dunes and material culture, then fly off. For them, it seems we are simply decorative elements for their sets and back in New York, London or Paris, they gain prestige, box-office returns and awards. For Nolan’s Dakhla shoot, he appears to have neither sought our consent nor considered the ethics of in effect helping to prop up and legitimise Morocco’s occupation, thus making the space even more unsafe for Sahrawis living under it. He is actively participating in a state-sponsored PR campaign designed to legitimise an illegal occupation.

had a dream last night about a meme that sprung up out of nowhere after a tumblr user who was having a minor surgery for idk what made a post beforehand that said "going under anaesthetic today, wish me luck!" and inexplicably attached a photo of a whippet or a greyhound or something that looked something like this:

so naturally, everyone reblogged with the same image on repeat (and we all thanked god for tumblr collapsing huge posts), and very quickly Pave (which was collectively decided to be his name and was pronounced "par-vay" and not "payve", as you'd expect) became the shorthand for both expressing enthusiasm about surgeries/medical procedures, AND used in light-hearted posts griping about post-recovery.

he became particularly big in the trans community after an incident where a user made a vent post about post-op pain after she'd had cosmetic gender-affirming surgery, and some fuck-ass terf decided it was their job to criticise her for "complaining about an elective surgery" (with a whole load of other bullshit besides). someone else reblogged and added pave as a shorthand to express their sympathy to the user for her pain (of both the surgery AND bc some fuckhead decided to bullshit on her post).

apparently though the terf hadn't encountered the meme before and fucking ERUPTED, with a bonkers reply accusing the other user of threatening them and abt how they feared for their life (which. they hadn't done anything else? just the meme), like copy-pasta level of ridiculous.

so naturally, everyone started reblogging with pave, and editing him to be progressively more uh

which eventually had the terf deactivating lmao. at this point people were now defaulting to using crunchy trans rights pave, who was now operating as a short hand for wishing someone support or luck, and Also to signal terfs to stay the fuck away.

pave kept being edited pretty relentlessly, but everyone would just adapt and use the newest edit. at one point they gave her big unnaturals!

in hindsight the dream definitely happened because i'm stressed abt an upcoming wisdom teeth removal and my partner and i had a pretty lovely chat about gender last night anyway i woke up and was genuinely a little bummed out that pave didn't exist so instead of doing productive things i made her real
