i really thought the point of "being lgbt+ doesn't absolve you of racism as a white person" was that white people arent absolved of racism by being marginalized but it really seems like people think other marginalizations make it okay. no being disabled doesn't do it. no being poor doesnt do it. we need to fight against racism actively no matter what.
We have got to stop framing our oppression in ways that promote the idea that other people cannot relate to our struggles. Not only does it isolate comrades in the struggle, it actively diminishes recognition of other struggles--often including those even more horrific than what we are at risk of. And this happens especially between Gay and Black struggles.
"when have straight people ever had to check what states were safe for them?" Sundown towns are still a thing. Starlight tours. What states have abortion access? What states have open carry? What states have stand your ground? What states have 3-strike rules? Women, people of color, disabled people, immigrants, and more have had to be abundantly cautious where they travel to. Straight trans people have much more travel risk right now than gay cis people.
It's a new iteration of the same tired question: "imagine if straight people weren't allowed to marry" interracial marriage in the US is younger than my parents. We disgrace people of color by forgetting their history and contemporary struggles, and we abandon queer people of color, Black queer people, by segmenting their overlapping fights.

Going to slightly swerve to an adjacent and related topic because YES, ALL OF THIS, but also I feel like the acknowledgement/understanding of intersectionality could genuinely cure us of many of society’s ills and prejudices.
I think about it a lot specifically within the concept of the trans experience, because I think that there’s often this weird push to say “Trans women are EXACTLY the same as cis women and have IDENTICAL STRUGGLES and if you disagree then you’re a TERF”, but I think the real key to resolving this (frankly ridiculous and repetitive argument) is to acknowledge the existence of intersectionality within the feminine experience.
For example, I am a white cis woman in America. I am NEVER going to understand the experience of a black woman in America, no matter how hard I try. Or a black woman in Ethopia, or Sierra Leone, or Nigeria, or Puerto Rico, and frankly we could just keep going and list the entire African diaspora. Black womanhood is just an aspect of the female experience that I will NEVER know or understand.
The same is true for trans and cis woman. A trans woman WON’T ever completely understand the cis female experience, but ya know what? I’m never going to be able to understand a trans woman’s experience either.
Equating trans and cis women’s experience as “the same” as an attempt to validate trans women’s womanhood isn’t just disrespectful to cis women, but it’s disrespectful to trans women too. It erases their struggles, their unique journeys, and the BEAUTIFUL ways that their femininity is different from cis women’s.
Intersectionality shouldn’t divide us, it should help us to see the beauty in one another and to understand the ways and places in which we differ
