Yo, I'm A.K. Harper (penname), but you can call me Raven [he/him]. I’m a queer and disabled author and I write realistic fiction about the psychological atmosphere. I'm going to be posting about my stories and my characters...and you're going to read them (if you want).

I try to use them to spread awareness over certain topics because the world needs to change. My stories are meant to provide insight into the world of living with trauma and/or mental illness.

While I primarily write fiction, I also dabble in poetry and memoir! As this is a multipurpose blog, I do also post about fandoms, rants, and just what’s on my mind.

NPD Reminder

I just want to remind pwNPD that despite all the stigma, prejudice, and "normalized" verbal abuse, there are people outwhere who do not fall for that shit!

We see you, we exist, we shake our heads in disbelief or get angry with you when we read about the "abusive narc. ex" who was everything but NPD.

I want to let you know that many of you are wonderful people. Sure, there are also assholes among them, but they are present in every demographic.

Your NPD does not make you bad. Quite contrarily, Iyour efforts, your courage, and your diligence are admirable. We see your strengths, the obstacles you overcame, the odds you fought - successfully. Your independence and your abiltiy to overachieve and doing better than predicted. It is not going unnoticed!

Even though the people around you may not see you, others do. You are lovable and capable of friendship and partnership! If people can't handle you, its simply because some people do not match. And thats okay.

But thats not because you are flawed or anything!

It would change SO much

1. Everytime team Avatar goes ANYWHERE they would have to first explain to ppl that YES they r fire nation and NO their not the enemy

Suddenly, the issue would be that ppl in the rebellion have a hard time trusting AANG-the AVATAR-because of the 'company' he keeps.

Can u imagine the DRAMA when they reach Ba Sing Se OR the Northern water tribe

2. Zuko may go after Aang TWICE as hard. In a twsited way, in the beginning, Zuko WAS proud of being the crown prince of the fire nation. Its why whenever he talks about his honor, he says: my honor, my throne, my country, etc etc. He DOES care about the nation and someone FROM the fire nation HELPING THE AVATAR????

3. It would open up a great perspective on how the fire nation is being affected by its own war. We went into it briefly when the team were undercover, but it would be cool to see more

4. The inner turmoil for Aang of having to understand that the Fire Nation burned down his home....and he's actively traveling with fire antion folk. It may not worry him at all most times, but it would DEFINITELY have meant smthn when he first found Gyatso's skeleton.

Your point about the way the Fire Nation is affected by the war is SO RIGHT because it would give sm more time to explore the social structure of the Fire Nation.

We learned it was oppressive to its youth in Book 3, but are there specific groups targeted. Does gender play a role? How does it view queerness? Do they resent people with different features or skin tones? What about disabilities since I’m assuming a lot of their men go to war? LIKE THERE’S SM POTENTIAL HERE. Countries don’t have simple rules, especially if they’re strict, so you can wave in intersectionality or even just do ALLEGORIES for this stuff.

It would also expand upon Zuko’s relationship with his national identity, even after he joins the Gaang. How does he see himself? How does it reflect his experiences growing up? Was the royal family particularly bad or is this a product of pain portrayed as culture?

When i thought about this, i was thinking okay so how would a person from the fire nation even run into Aang??? We barely ever see any ppl from thebfire antion cuz most stay in their borders

So i came up qith rwo possible scenarios

1. This fire nation character--lets just say FNC for short--is a fire nation soldier. So it would be a similar situation with deserting like Zuko. Heck, maybe thwy were traveling with Jeong Jeong.

2. FNC is a person who's from the fire nation colonies in the esrth kingdom.

U could have one or BOTH of these scenarios together and either way it would mean so much.

If the character's a deserter, i feel Zuko would subconsciously be...kinda jealous of them. Or at least his IDEA of them. Especially after he betrayed Iroh in Ba Sing Se and is in the fire nation palace. Some part of him deep down KNOWS thats what he should've done too. He creates this image in his head of FNC as some happy person with no problems whos making the right choices and he resents them for it. FNC wouls have been a symbol to a choice he subconsciously thinks HE shouldve made.

AND, if the person was from the fire nation colonies, i think it would be a GREAT way to show how the fire nation AND other nations react to ppl of mix race cuz the colonies no soubt have more earth kingdom relations than the whole fire nation. Can u u imagine? A person from the FIRE NATION, maybe a fire bender(?), who looks more earth kingdom than fire.

How would peers from the fire nation treat them? Would they be considered less? How about the earth kingdom? They may seem more accepting at first....but then they learn where they're from.

Could they be seen as too earth kingdom for the fire nation, too fire nation for the earth kingdom?

Heck, said character may be a little more well versed with surviving in the wild cuz i cant be the only one who noticed that, with Katara and Sokka being from a snowy wasteland, toph and zuko being rich kids, and aang having grown up in the air temple, its a literal miracle they knew how to hunt for food. For example, we had the episode of when Sokka was telling the gaang they have just a handful of nuts for dinner. NUTS.

I feel like, taking the idea that FNC is of mixed race (culturally fire and firebender, racially appearing as Earth Kingdom), he would be treated like shit on BOTH side. The Fire Nation would see him as a peasant and the Earth Kingdom would see him as no better than the ones doing the conquest.

I also feel like him being an ex-soldier would be great too, especially in contrast with Zuko. Pre-redemption Zuko would try to convince himself that he hates FNC for abandoning his country, when really he’s just jealous that FNC had the CHOICE instead of being burned and banished by his own father. This could be contrasted with post-redemption Zuko who would learn to see this as an admirable quality, and I feel like they would be pretty close.

With the ex-soldier idea, a fun area to explore would be WHY FNC left. Was he running away from home like Toph or Zuko? Did he feel driven by morality like Katara? Was he DRAGGED along like Sokka /JJJ (Sokka left of his own volition too LMAO). Was he horrified by what he learned in the military so much so that he left his home? Had he always known it was wrong, but joined the military as is he saw no other way until it was too much to bear? Did he get injured in battle? (Disability rep 👀) Was it a combination of these? There’s so much to experiment with here. Hell, you could even scrap the military idea and make them a trans person who couldn’t find their place in the Fire Nation or the Earth Kingdom, as many of our heroes are outcasts themselves.

It would also be really interesting of Sokka and Katara came along later and had to reconcile their own prejudices against the Fire Nation earlier on. While founded in a years of trauma and hurt, they do hold negative views of ALL Fire Nation people, and this would be an interesting way to get this done before Book 3 and with more complexity rather than an “Oh” moment.

Plus, Aang’s first companion being a firebender means he’d learn fire first, and assuming this random kid hasn’t gone to the dragons yet, he would be taught the old way of firebending. How would he relearn it the right way in the series? Would he ever? Does FNC know something from experience that Aang wouldn’t?
