Harmful changes to Endangered Species Act

Now, more changes to the Endangered Species Act by the current administration continue to attack crucial parts of the law to protect habitat and newly listed species.

These changes prioritize harmful development over science-based management and make it harder to put species on a path to recovery.

actually can't get over how terribly christopher nolan treated the black women in the odyssey

like. i don't think any of the women in the odyssey are treated well by nolan (penelope and circe in particular have their characters ruined to make odysseus seem smarter and more honourable) but there's something so nasty about casting a black woman as athena, goddess of wisdom, war, and handicraft, the character who arguably drives most of the post ogygia plot in the poem, and choosing to ignore all of that in favour of a mute hallucination of a girl who was raped and murdered whose only function in the film is to add to the guilt the white male lead feels over the atrocities he committed. or casting a dark skinned black woman as the most beautiful woman in the world, and then having her husband carve up her face to disfigure her as punishment for being so beautiful that she was kidnapped

1. book you’ve reread the most times

Okay this one is hard because I’m big on rereading books. I’m 99% sure the answer is The Lord of the Rings, which I’ve read anywhere from 8-10 times. I used to reread it every year from 2003-2009, and then reread it a few more times with longer gaps in between because of college.

Very probable runner-ups though are: Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl (which I read repeatedly as a young girl myself and tbh it may actually beat LotR but I never kept track), Pride and Prejudice (I’ve read the physical book 3-4 but have listened to an audiobook probably another 3-4 times), and Jane Eyre (which I probably have read the physical book of 4x or more and have also listened to on audiobook).

15. recommend and review a book

I’m going to pick one from the books I’ve read so far this year. It’s a novella by Becky Chambers: To Be Taught, if Fortunate

It’s a medium-paced sci-fi novella about a crew of space-farers sent to explore and describe a series of planets. It has some really fun and interesting sci-fi elements, such as the astronauts experiencing cellular modifications to help them adapt to the environments on the planets they land on.

It’s also got a lot of emotional moments, positive and negative, big and small, touching on love and grief and discovery and home and life and dying, the ethics of and cost of our human desire for knowledge and discovery, all in a tightly woven short narrative (<150 pages). A lot of the moments don’t have time to linger individually, but together they sort of weave this big beautiful picture. I really loved the moments of wonder and joy, which were contrasted with the lows in a way that I felt made both more poignant. There’s also a bit of mystery, though it’s not the central focus, more like a plot point to help spur the characters on in their choices. Becky Chambers’ writes beautifully, with a flow that sometimes felt poetic but not too flowery.

Bonus, the cast (4 total) is diverse and each have their own distinct personalities, desires, voices, and reactions to events that made them feel very real.

The story is adventurous, reflective, hopeful, and a little bit sad. I really, really loved it.
