Is he, yknow...
Bong realizing that his all movies end up in the bloodshed of the upperclass because he was a sociology major lol
When i'm checking on my vibe in the morning:
Lady Danbury and Lady Violet Bridgerton
BRIDGERTON (2020ā )
It is my twenty-fifth birthday and I am inconsolably sad at the thought that pink and white strawberry cows will never exist, let alone be dog-sized and my best friend. I am seriously considering taking my emergency panic medication to disrupt these thoughts.
They didn't do nothing.
They knocked on his door, he didn't answer so they determined she needed psychiatric evaluation and had her forcibly committed.
I hate the police so much.
Meanwhile they outright break into houses on suspicion that there might be any drugs
I love that the internet saw people comparing women and other alienated groups of people and went, ātheyāre dating,ā and, āthey support each other.ā Weāre improving as a society.
Does anyone know who these artists are?? Theyāre brilliant and Iād like to credit them!!
THIS IS HOW TO TAKE A TRASH OPINION COMIC AND MAKE IT BETTER. THANK YOU.
The best genre to ever have existed
These improved my day
GAY RIGHTS
I love this!!!
these legit make me feel better. even leaving aside the gay⦠ā¦i wish when i was younger and felt like an outcast people had said āyou know, you can look like this and like that and they can do these other things and you can be best friends, partners, whatever.ā EVERYONE GETS TO LIKE THINGS is maybe the actual secret to happiness, i think
Making me remember early Facebook and insta
I feel seen and I'm not sure I like it
This is leaving out in my hand/right in front of my face and I still can't find it
āIām literally staring at it but I need someone else to grab it and say āitās right here!ā to recognize itā
You ever hear something so stupid that it physically makes your brain hurt? Lady at the store is telling people that depression is a medical condition that exempts her from wearing a mask
Other galaxy brain arguments Iāve heard:
1. āCloth masks collect bacteriaā: Yeah bitch, so do your underwear, but ideally you swap them out for a fresh pair every so often, and,, you know,,, wash them
2. āChildren wonāt be able to recognize their parentsā: Ma'am if you bring your child to the store and they are, for whatever legitimate reason, incapable of recognizing their own caretaker when you, say,,, put a scarf on a little too high?? MAYbE donāt be leaving them out of your sight for extended periods in public areas?!? MaYbE Consider keeping a scope on that???
3. āMandatory mask policies violate human rightsā a) no they do not b) section 7 of the human charter of rights and freedoms allows for freedoms to be amended or recinded if judged necessary in accordance to the principals of fundamental justice, and so as a public safety concern, even if it did, no it wouldnāt c) Nobody is forcing you at gunpoint to go to Macyās for yoga pants at 2pm on a Tuesday. You are a guest. Order online or suck it up like everyone else d) all of the above
heard a new one at work yesterday) āitās illegal in this state for me to cover my face while Iām carrying a concealed weaponā sir this is a furniture store not the shores of Dunkirk leave your gun in the car if youāre that worried or GO HOME
So someone pointed out to me recently that in a few years, maybe a few decades, the history of the us during covid is probably going to get twisted. The fact that we all had to make and wear cloth masks is going to be hailed as a symbol of how we ā"came together as a nationāāā or whatever the fuck propaganda spin they try to put on it.
So I just want to say, for the record, the time of the corona virus pandemic was not a time when america came together.
This was a time when people hoarded toilet paper and sanitizing supplies either for themselves or to sell at absurd prices to the desperate people who didnāt get to the store soon enough during the shortages
This was a time when scared parents were sending their kids to finish school in the spring in plastic trash bags because they couldnāt think of any other way to possibly keep their families safe
This was a time when grocery store and retail and service workers were forced to keep working whether they wanted to risk their health or not because they couldnāt make rent otherwise and the people with enough privilege to have remote jobs tried to repay them with applause instead of fair wages
This was a time when nurses had the hold the hands of multiple dying people every day as their families watched their loved ones die over a video call because the hospital couldnāt risk having visitors
This was a time when city governments had to handle so many eviction hearings that they rented out convention centers and called in the national guard instead of doing a rent freeze to stop predatory landlords
This was a time when racism and police brutality were so unbearably horrible that people protested in the streets for months even though there was a god damn pandemic that our federal government wasnāt doing shit to stop and the cops were so mad that they were being asked to stop beating up black people that they were beating up everyone
This was a time when schools being forced to reopen in the fall or lose their federal funding had to draft templates for letters if a teacher or a staff person or a fucking child died from exposure to corona at school
This was a time when the president of the United states demanded that the cdc stop releasing data about all the people who were dying because of the warnings he ignored for months were making him look bad
This was a time when some state governments didnāt mandate masks and forced businesses to reopen because they didnāt want to pay unemployment to people trying to stay safe at home anymore
This was a time when Jeff Bezos was on track to be a fucking trillionare because everyone was ordering things on amazon instead of going to the store and the people he worked to death to get it didnāt see a single cent of it
This was a time when instead of providing homeless people with housing, we painted boxes on the ground to show homeless people how far away the had to be on the street to maintain social distancing
We did not come together to make cloth masks. Cloth masks represent nothing less than the absolute and utter failure of a nationās government to inform and protect its citizens
This was not a time when we came together. This was a time when we survived, and not all of us made it.
This was a time when people casually talked about how many human lives the economy was worth without considering the evil that had just come out of their mouths.
This was a time when thousands of us died for profit and the ego of a cheating narcissists con man who scammed his way into the white house
This was a time that we survived. Most of us tried to do the right thing, stay home, limit trips to the store and socializing, wear a mask. And still, so many of us were lost. Thousands every day.
But that wasnāt a good enough reason for some people, for those among us who were too selfish to recognize the responsibilities we have toward one another as human beings.
This was not a time that we came together
This was a time that we survived
Not all of us made it
And those of us who did survive will never forget the evil we saw daily in our politicians and those around us
peak doctor who was the end of season 4 when the entire cast of the previous series turned up and it was just bitchin one liners from everyone without a coherent plot thanks rtd you legend
That title sequence though
āif you take medication for that, youāll be taking medication all your life!!ā yeah, and?? bud, i already put on my glasses every morning. itās like. a condition of mine, not a side hobby iām pursuing irresponsibly.Ā
The kind of people who say this are also the kind of people who carry a bottle of advil in their purse and slam four every time their ponytail is too tight.
So last night was my first welding class and the second i walked through the door the teacher saidĀ āhey youāre zoe rightā and I started to panic because how does the teacher immediately know who I am fuck did I have this teacher before how come i donāt recognize him fuck fuck iām a terrible person
turns out iām just the youngest person in the class by about 30 years so the deduction wasnāt that hard
anyways, apparently people keep taking the welding class over and over again and the wait list is like 100 people long and so it was by some act of providence of pure dumb luck that I managed to get a spot. This also means I was the only person there who hadnāt welded before.
Iām stationed at a big center table where the teacher can keep an eye on me, and everyone else is in booths on the surrounding walls each making their own projects. And these are impressive looking projects. One guy is making a side table, a woman is making a giant metal rocking chair, and another guy was making a wind chime out of old compressed air canisters.Ā
The elderly gentlemen in the booth right behind me introduces himself to me as Jim and asks me if this is my first time and I say yeah and he smiles at me and tells me Iām gonna love it and how this class is so fun.
Immediately Jim becomes my new best friend. He comes over whenever I stop to take a break and asks how Iām doing and even helps me take the welding mask off when I couldnāt figure out how to do it myself.Ā
at one point i see Jim and another old guy talking to the teacher and i catch the old guy pointing at me. now being pointed at is usually never a good thing. the teacher has had me welding edges of scrap metal together so I can get a feel for the equipment. The teacher comes to check on me and I jokingly as him if those seasoned guys were making fun of me.Ā
Turns out Iām super good at welding and the old guy didnāt believe it was my first time welding ever and Jim was trying to convince him I was a newbie. :D
So for the entire 3 hour long class, like 15 middle aged and elderly people would periodically come by my table and check in with me, making sure Iām having fun and asking me questions about my life, and things like, do you know where the drinking fountain is, making sure Iām taking breaks, looking out for me and that kind of thing,Ā all while being completely kind and supporting and complimenting me on my welding skills.Ā
and thatās how a community center welding class gave me 15 new grandparents. i love them all and this class is going to be amazing
important addition 3 years later because I forgot:
the other elderly gentlemanās name is Gino and spoke with a thick Italian accent and took to calling me BellaĀ for the rest of the semester. Jim made sure to always take the booth closest to me.Ā
Another guy in the class named Mike did salvage diving as a hobby and always showed me pictures of the cool stuff heād found. He also made very cool sculptures out of spoons, forks and knives.Ā I at one point made an offhand joke that I was moving soon, and was jealous that Mike had all this cutlery to spare to make sculptures out of. (I was going to be moving in with my boyfriend and neither of us really had a lot of kitchenware) The next class he brought in an entire cutlery set insisting that he was trying to clean out his house because he had so many and wouldnāt take no for an answer. We still have them to this day :)
They had cupcakes waiting for me on my birthday and on the last day they had framed picture of me with my final project becauseĀ āitās important to celebrate your successesā and encouraged me to give it to my mom (which of course I did, along with my cattail sculpture)
long story short I would die for each and every one of them and thereās a group email chain that we all still keep in touch with and as of a few months ago it was Ginoās 85th birthday.Ā
that one extremely homoerotic painting of a babylonian man listening to a babylonian twink playing babylonian harp. that one
yeah
this is my favorite painting full stop
thatĀ ābabylonian twinkā is King David
The baffled twink composing Hallelujah
op i need you to understand that i literally woke up this morning thinking about this post
when christian artists change the line in hallelujah from āmaybe thereās a God aboveā to āI know that thereās a God aboveā >:c
#idk why iām so unreasonably angry#maybe cuz itās my fav line
itās also because Leonard COHEN (!) was Jewish and this is a quintessentially Jewish line, and changing it to that level of Annoying Certainty is stripping it of its Jewish meaning and imbuing it with that particularly American smug evangelical Christian attitude that makes me tired, so very tired
THAT IS EXACTLY WHY
I donāt think Iāve heard any cover artist sing my favorite verses You say I took the name in vain I donāt even know the name But if I did, well really, whatās it to you? Thereās aĀ blaze of light In every word It doesnāt matter which you heard The holy or the broken Hallelujah I did my best, it wasnāt much I couldnāt feel, so I tried to touch Iāve told the truth, I didnāt come to fool you And even though It all went wrong Iāll stand before the Lord of Song With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah
um woah
I will always hit the reblog button so hard for Hallelujah but ESPECIALLY mentions of the elusive final verses which are just about my favorite lyrics ever. Why do people always omit the best part of the song??
In Yiddish
In Hebrew
In Ladino
Yeah, I wonder why the verses that reference specific Jewish mystical and chassidic concepts that arenāt readily understood by AmericanĀ āI love Jews, you know, Jesus was Jewish!ā Christians never get any airtime. Funny that.
You say I took the name in vain I donāt even know the name But if I did, well really, whatās it to you? Thereās a blaze of light In every word It doesnāt matter which you heard The holy or the broken Hallelujah
These are specifically about Chassidic Jewish theories of the holy language, how each letter and combination of letters in Hebrew contains the essence of the divine spark and if used correctly, can unlock or uncover the divine spark in the mundane material word. And of course, there are secret names of God which, when spoken by any ordinary human would kill them, but if you are worthy and holy and righteous can be used to perform miracles or even to behold the glory of God face-to-face. The words themselves have power. Orthodox Jews often wonāt even pronounce the wordĀ āhallelujahā in itās entirety in conversation, because theĀ āyahā sound at the end is a True Name of God (there are hundreds, supposedly) and thus too holy to say outside of prayer.
None of this is to mention how Davidās sin in sleeping with Batshevah (the subject of much of the song, with a brief deviation to Shimshon and Delilah) is considered the turning point in the Tanach that ultimately dooms the Davidic line at the cosmological level and thus dooms Jewish sovereignty and independence altogether. From a Christian perspective this led to Jesus, the King of Kings, and thatās all very well and good for them, but for the Jews, the Davidic line never returned and is the central tragedy of the total arc of the Torah. Like, our Bible doesnāt have a happy ending? And thatās what this song is about? Thereās no Grace - you just have to sit with the sin and its consequence.
Of course, Cohen is referencing all of this ironically, and personalizing these very high-level religious concepts. Like the point of this song is that Cohen, the songwriter, is identifying with David, the psalmist, and identifying his own sins with Davidās. The ache that you hear in this song is that the two thousand year exile that resulted from one wrong night of passion and Cohen feels that the pain he has caused to his lover is of equally monumental infamy. Basically, in a certain light, the whole of Psalms is a vain effort for David to atone for his sin and I think Cohen was writing this song in wonderment that David could eternally praise the God who would not forgive him and would force him and his people into exile. But he ultimately gets how you have to surrender to the inexorable force of God in the face of your own inadequacies and how to surrender is to worship and to worship is to praise - hence, Hallelujah. You can either do the right thing and worship God from the start, or you can fuck up, be punished, and thus be forced to beg for His forgiveness. Itās the terrible inevitability of praise thatās driving him mad.
Like honestly, I identify with this song so strongly as an off-the-derech Jew, I sometimes wonder what Christians can possibly hear in this song, as it speaks so specifically to the sadomasochistic relationship that a lapsed Jew has with their God.Ā Itās such a different song from a Christian theological perspective itās almost unrecognizable, man.Ā This song continues to be a wonder of postmodern Jewish theology and sexuality from start to finish. Donāt let anyone give you any āJudeo-Christianā narishkeit. This is a Jewish song.
(Sorry about the wild tangent itās just 2AM and I love this song so dang much, you guys.)
holy shit. woah.
This.
That last bit from @stoneandbloodandwater, thatās a great articulation of the well of feeling, memory, storytelling, and culture packed into one of the most Jewish songs ever to get real famous. The song is both surrender and defiance, and that those are actually a single path together, not two opposite choices.
A small addition: This song is such a deeply resonant Jewish touchstone that every synagogue I have ever attended uses its melody in services from time to time.
It is so important, so powerful, so spiritually resonant that we use it in prayer.
If memory serves me, the cover we most often hear came about specifically because Jeff Buckley was like āman, this song is badass but I donāt know that I can do its concepts justiceā and Leonard Cohen was like āyou need different verses? Here, I wrote over eighty of the fuckers, pick what you want to useā and so Buckley put together verses that spoke to him as a non-Jew about sexuality and this idea of a failed relationship.
Which wouldnāt be an issue if Christians didnāt then take his adaptation (done, I emphasize again, with Cohenās blessing) and rewrite it in ways THAT DO NOT COME FROM THE ORIGINAL VERSES.
Yes, this.
