Like a month ago I messaged a craft group about accessibility for wheelchairs and the answer I got was âthereâs a lot of stairs but we have cute boys who can carry youâ. And itâsâŠnot good. As a wheelchair bound person I largely depend on people when I want to go out and do *anything* so Iâm used to it, I laugh it off, make an annoyed post about it and off I go. But I wanna just say a thing real quick.
Even if I wasnât gay, wasnât a survivor scared of men, getting help as a disabled person is justâŠNot a pleasant thing to us! Imagine for a sec how youâd feel being carried up a flight of stairs. Youâre a grown person. Youâre being touched in an awkward way. Youâd rather do it yourself. Youâre So Uncomfortable. Itâs not where I look for the beginning of a romantic relationship. So likeâŠcould abled people stop doing this thing where they think helping us in a condescending and infantilizing way is cute? Cause Iâm real tired. Just get me a ramp or lift and Iâm cool. I donât need a dating service when Iâm just trying to go about my day
If youâre abled please reblog it cause likeâŠthe more ppl knows the better
I needed an adventure, so I moved to Thailand a couple weeks ago to teach English for a year. Iâll update later (Iâm about to go to bed), but letâs just say itâs NOT been the kind of adventure I signed up for. This past week in particular might be the most stressful one of my life
I worked with a recruitment agency because I know nothing about job hunting abroad. I told them Iâd prefer to teach high school, but anything was fine as long as we didnât go younger than 6 or 7 years old. They put me teaching 3-5 year olds.
I didnât get told the school iâd been placed at until two days before I was supposed to meet the principal. I started the next Tuesday and got my time table the night before. When I got in on my first day, I was handed a different schedule and walked around the first and second grade area (where the new schedule had me teaching). Two hours in, someone else tracked me down and dragged me back to the kindergarten, gave me the first schedule, and told me I needed to show up by 8 every morning (I had showed up at 7:30, but since I was in the wrong place, I guess that doesnât count).
The schoolâs immersion program is new, at least for the age group Iâm teaching, and itâs way too hard for kids who 1. maybe know to say âhiâ and 2. donât know how school works or how things are generally taught. I explained matching vocab to pictures as many ways as I could, but they just werenât getting it.
Classes are split into reading lessons and speaking/listening lessons, unlike in the US, where youâll do a bit of everything in one class to tie it all together. Friends, I have to teach 3 year olds to read a foreign language in a new alphabet. I know American kids are probably learning their ABCs by then, but theyâre not also learning their AĐBs and expected to read a paragraph written in it. Yes, I seriously had 3 year olds trying to read an English paragraph during their second day of school.
Every room has a Thai teacher, but their English knowledge is very limited and canât help you translate very much.
The rooms have windows into the hallways. Kids keep walking by and waving and getting excited. I donât know if itâs because Iâm new or because Iâm a redhead.
Iâll probably make a separate post later about general things Iâve noticed/experienced in Thailand outside of school

don't go into the humanities because they're unprofitable and don't go into stem cuz its getting torn apart right now and don't go into buisness because it's competetive and speculative and don't go into education because it pays like shit. Just lay on thr ground. Just lay on the ground.
Billions in foreign real estate deals while serving as head of state. Billions in crypto deals for him and his sons while gutting regulation of the industry. Suing his own government and negotiating a settlement funded by the taxpayers. His sons investing in defense contractors that gain from lucrative government deals. We're so numb to this grifting off the presidency that hardly anyone notices.
I just remembered that this was a thing that was HILARIOUS in 2006 and apparently that was ten years ago now.
Old people: join with me in remembering how funny we found this on LiveJournal.
Young people: look at this lolrus, itâs so happy, it has a bucket.
And then they stealed away the bucket and we realised we had fucked up a perfectly good elephant seal and given it anxiety.
listen this vintage meme is high quality and i will hear nothing said against it
20 years. I am not happy about this.
Iâm delighted at the bucket reappearing but dismayed at the passage of time
Happy 20 years to Lolrus and his bucket!
HEY, FELLOW HATERS OF INSANELY-BRIGHT CAR HEADLIGHTS, SOMEONE HAS STARTED A PETITION TO REGULATE THEM.
It's an official petition through the Australian Government's e-petition page, which means if it gets enough signatures, it will be tabled in government.
You do have to be an Australian citizen to sign it, BUT!!! PLEASE REBLOG THIS EVEN IF YOURE NOT, because these kind of things have a roll-on effect, and if Australia legislates LED headlights, then other countries may follow.
FYI, the petition asks only for your name and email, and once you've clicked the sign button, they'll send you an email to confirm your signature --- you need to click the confirmation link in the email to have your signature counted.
There is a similar petition in the UK as well! It only has 230 signatures or so so if you are in the UK sign it! Clicky clicky go go go! Let's get these damnable things off the road!
Transport Canada has a survey running right now asking for feedback on your experience with vehicle headlights and glare at night! Runs until April 20, 2026 so fellow Canadians - get over there and get your voice heard! And it's not just for drivers either - if you walk or bike or otherwise are on the roads after dark, you are the target audience too.
it fucking sucks being a disabled person who can't work and having to see these fuckass posts where someone's like "ahaha jobless people have no life and that's why everyone shitty online has No Job" and everyone and their mother reblogs it joyfully onto my dash for me to see. yes unemployed and unemployable people are truly without exception dogshit people with no hobbies and no redeeming qualities. you're so right. anyway if you'll excuse me i have to start my shift at the I'll Never Be Employed Because Of Permanent Disability And I Love Knowing How You Really See Me store
if ur able to work can u reblog this i am seriously SO sick of it.
btw this isn't solely a disability rights issue or an issue about people who are entirely unable to work. you should also be thinking about the people who are regarded as unhireable. transfems are hugely discriminated against in this way, people of color are passed over for less qualified white people, anyone who has any difficulty playing the interview game is less hireable... frankly anyone who made the mistake of pursuing the things they love and now has a degree for a niche field. if you still joke about Jobless People it's because you've fundamentally connected the worth of people to their labor, and specific labor, work that you see as valuable. and while i'm at it stop making fun of people who still live with their parents. asshole.
If the democrats and republicans are both shit... Who on earth would you vote for?
Every time I get asked this itâs intended as a gotcha. Just because I said both are shit, doesnât mean I wouldnât vote.
But I do mean one is only slightly less shit, and I do think that the next democrat should run on jailing the heads of the current administration and dismantling and rebuilding a lot of the current system from scratch.
As a matter of fact they might have to do so anyway, as DOGE was able to fire/remove/destroy decades of general governing and civil service knowledge.
Scottish Trans People PSA
Over recent years, we have seen an increase in the number of people contacting our Adult Gender Service for support, advice, and treatment.
This week (20th April 2026) the Sandyford Adult Gender Service in Glasgow have said that they are beginning their adult waiting list validat
If you are on Sandyford's Adults waiting list, they are carrying out a "validation exercise" to confirm contact details beginning today (20th April 2026)
They'll contact you via email, text or mail depending on your contact preferences, and you have 2 weeks to respond and confirm that your contact details are still the same, or amend them if required
IF THEY HAVE NOT CONTACTED YOU BY 1ST JUNE then contact them at [email protected] or +44 141 211 8693
This is for the adult service only, the young people's service has already gone through this exercise.
Scottish Trans is still waiting to hear what will happen if you don't respond in time, though they have been told that reminders etc will be sent
Non responders will be removed from the waiting list, but if you get in touch afterwards, you MAY be put back on the list in the place you held previously, but this hasn't been confirmed by Sandyford.
FAQs and accessibility support are available on the first link (Sandyford's webpage about this) and I've also posted Scottish Trans's link about this too
Any signal boosting is GREATLY appreciated because I had no idea about this!
@ayeforscotland sorry to bother but I don't really know of other big Scottish accounts on here
the way teenagers are treated these days is wild. when i was a teenager we were all watching porn, jerking off, and going to horror movies with 3000 gallons of blood. Nowadays they make kids get a permission slip to watch anything darker than Barney the Dinosaur. Insane.
Every year we infantilize teenagers more and more and act surprised when they grow up to be terrified, angry, emotionally stunted adults.
& then for some reason people fixate more on "ugh these teenagers just want to be treated like babies!!! teenagers are to blame for the rise in puritanism!!!!!" than how this is a very obvious example of ageism and the increased control over a socially vulnerable and exploited group
I think a commonly overlooked part of this coddling is that it teaches kids and teenagers to be afraid of things they don't need to be afraid of, which is exactly how they end up as "puriteens". I remember as a child being terrified to change the channel on the tv because I had ended up with the impression that seeing even seconds of an R rated movie or tv show would give me nightmares. And then as a tween every time I saw swearing I felt sick to my stomach because I had been taught such a thing is bad and harmful. I think I would have suffered less if I hadn't been raised with everyone around me acting like mature media was so bad. By the time I was a teenager I had figured out this was bunk, but understandably a lot of people don't. By making this whole system worse and stronger you have teens who have been told that seeing explicit or dark media Will Harm Them, and so they act in ways that would be appropriate if it really was the info-hazard it's implied to be.
^^ never heard anybody specifically talk about this but yeah. parents acting like sexual or any "dark" content in a story or show was going to put bad things in my head that were going to be there permanently just gave me a deeply distressing sort of contamination anxiety
On the opposite end, my parents never gave a shit about what I watched or read, like I watched horror movies as a kid(not even teenager) and loved them, they never moralized what I watched or acted like media could permanently damage or traumatize me, though they did always talk to me if I read something that made me uncomfortable and told me I never had to watch or read anything I didn't want to, and I grew up perfectly fucking fine and indeed would credit my ability to be normal about fiction to growing up like this.
You're absolutely not protecting them from anything by doing this, if anything you're making them less safe because you're destroying their ability to accurately assess and deal with a threat.

The other day I saw someone say that what impressed them about the Superman movie was that there was a scene where Superman saved a woman. And there wasnât a child with her like there would be in other movies.
To make the audience sympathetic to her because she is a mother. The movie says, no her life is valuable because it is a life. It doesnât matter is she is a wife, mother or even squirrel.
And because of my current hyper fixation I thought of how in Hunger Games, while Katnissâs father was certainly an important presence in her life. Her life is never valuable only because she is Burdock Everdeenâs daughter.
At the start of the series she only has female living relatives. Her value is never measured in terms of how she relates to a man.
Even Peeta, her love interest. In a rare twist on a familiar trope. Most people in the series save him to appease Katniss. He is saved for being Katnissâs friend/partner/codependent trauma bond. And she will literally kill everyone around her and then herself if he dies.
In another series the dynamic easily could have been people saving Katniss because she is the love of Peetaâs life.
What Iâm trying to say is her life is never valuable because she is a wife/mother/daughter. It is valuable because of who she is and that she is a human being.
I could go on about the surprisingly complex ways Hunger Games is feminist beyond the obvious girlboss with a bow and arrow.
(Literally as I was typing that I thought of how her archery skills which would stereotypically be seen as masculine derived from her need to nurture and feed her family stereotypically feminine traits. Also feeding them-being in the kitchen interplayed with violent hunting)
Also the subtle ways Collins implies the patriarchal nature of the Capitol, while not as overt as say a Handmaidâs Tale. Itâs certainly there. (We donât see any women in high up positions in government, no female peacekeepers can I ever remember being mentioned and while all tributeâs can be sexualized there are distinct ways the female tributes are. And they are sexualized more aggressively for the most part (Finnick being the exception that proves the rule).
Itâs just aged so much better than many of itâs girlboss feminism contemporaries. It lets its female characters be messy and sometimes evil without always getting a redemption arch.
It deconstructs the glory of violence and bloodshed for as I stated earlier stereotypically feminine traits like compassion.
Not to mention Snow, the ultimate patriarch literally getâs deposed by women. And replaced by a woman.
This is not even getting into the prequels.
Nor is this all he ways the series is feminist, but this is long enough as is.
Actually, I have to say a bit more about the Hungarian elections. Even tho I know the hype is mostly died down now. Many people posted about it, about how it's just about going out and voting and it's all just kumbaya from there (also including my post from the night of the election) but that is not actually true.
There were many factors that played into this landslide victory, that would probably be hard to replicate in other countries, but I will still lay it out, in case this is useful to anyone in countries in similar situations.
Péter Magyar was an insider
He was a Fidesz (OrbĂĄn's party) insider, he is actually the ex-husband of a former minister, though he didn't hold any prominent positions before. This is important, because it made it a lot harder for the government to get an angle on him. They couldn't really say that he's a buffoon or corrupt or any other shit they smeared the 'traditional' opposition with, because that would all come back to them.
And this means that you can't let someone's background cloud your vision. You have to listen, even if you don't like where they came from.
2. He was extremely tight lipped about important issues during the campaign
Hungary is a relatively conservative country. That doesn't mean that there aren't a lot of people with leftist values, but - especially after 16 years of constant conservative propaganda poisoning society against progressive values - you just can't get wide support if you get caught up in hot-button issues. Let's take Pride for example. OrbĂĄn tried to ban Budapest Pride after a long anti-LGBT campaign, and Magyar got a lot of criticism from opposition media for not taking a stand on the issue, even after the Pride was held despite the ban - and was the largest Pride in my country's history.
LGBT issues are important to me, and they are important to a lot of left leaning people, but the reality is that it's not important to (or are even negatively viewed by) a large part of the population.
In most countries - ESPECIALLY when people in power turned LGBT rights into a poisoned pill - you can't win an election if you get 'branded' with being a SJW. And yeah, it made my hackles rise that he didn't give a clear answer about it, only that under his leadership everyone in the country would have the right to protest and right to assembly.
Was that enough? No. Was that more than what we got from OrbĂĄn? Yes.
It was only an incrementally better stance than OrbĂĄn's, but it WAS better.
3. Magyar put huge emphasis on rural voters and on getting national symbols back from the far right
The opposition of most authoritarians is concentrated in urban areas. It's much easier to develop more progressive leaning values if you are constantly exposed to people of different cultures and lifestyles than your own, but that is not the case in rural areas, especially if the government has huge media presence that feeds more isolated people fear and propaganda.
Péter Magyar went on a giant campaign, holding civic meetings in sometimes bigger, sometimes tiny towns. He wasn't afraid to get close to people. Much of his first such campaigns was largely spent with him talking to people from the back of a pickup (hastily spraypainted our national colors) and answering their questions directly.
Like, literally.
He met hundreds of thousands of voters face-to-face.
By the end of his campaign, he held up to four or five such meetings a day all over the country. He'd been in bigger cities multiple times, he'd been in every voting district. His last tour had more than 500 stops. And this is a tiny country.
What I want to say with this is that, you can't do this without a) putting in the fucking work, and b) leaving the population centers, where your supporters already are.
He and his team also had a very good sense for marketing shit. In pretty much every country I know of, the far right is always fucking appropriating national/folk symbolism, and they'd been great about claiming them back, and giving people a common ground. Like his party's theme song is a very popular Hungarian folk song. That sort of shit.
4. Top notch investigative journalism
Péter Magyar's whole bid for power started with a scandal that came from investigative journalists. The details are not important now, but one of the 'pawns' that Orbån decided to sacrifice to calm the public was Magyar's ex-wife. That was what started this whole thing, what made him turn against his former community. And during the last years - and especially during the last weeks before the election - the remaining independent media kept coming out with more and more major scandals. You have to keep supporting independent media, or the opportunity may never come to change your government.
I could go on for a lot longer, but tumblr is telling me that this post is getting too long lol. Anyway.
My general point still stands. If your house is on fire, you canât be like âwell thatâs not the fireman I imaginedâ. Even if it's a bit more complex than that.
USAmericans - pay attention. You aren't going to get perfect. You are going to get better than.
Coming off an authoritarian regime like we have now, you have to focus on "better than".
ANYTHING better than. If you get hung up on your single issue darling and "protest" by not voting again, we are all going to be stuck under their thumb another 4 years.
"Better than" is just what it says - Better. Couldn't we all use a little "better" right now?
I wasn't aware of the UN report. One more reason to boycott this year's contest
