āWhat were you thinking about?ā Rozanov asked, his voice low. Shane swallowed. His throat was bone dry. āYou,ā he said quietly.
HE IS TEXTING HIS CRUSH!!!
Swimming makes you a different kind of tired, right? And Shane knows this, has grown up in and around lakes, he built his Cottage right next to a lake. Ilya does not. Yes he's an athlete but when he comes to the Cottage it's the first time he spends a longer amount of time in the water, swimming around, doing handstands, all of it.
So his first post lake nap hits hard. Ilya, freshly showered, just meant to sit down on the couch for a second but he wakes up four hours later. Half his curls pressed to the side of his head, the other fluffy because he fell asleep with his hair still a bit wet. He's got faint lines on his cheek from where his face was pressed into one of the pillows. No idea what time it is or how long he's been asleep. It takes him a minute to come back online.
"Shane?", he mumbles, not fully awake yet but already searching for Shane.
"Right here", comes Shane's voice and, oh, yes he is. Ilya blinks sleepily at him. It takes him another minute to realise that his feet are in Shane's lap. One of Shane's hands is on his shin, thumb softly caressing it. In his other hand he's holding a book. Ilya watches as Shane puts his bookmark into the book, putting it on the small table next to the couch so he can give Ilya his full attention.
"Good nap?", Shane asks. And he's smiling and his eyes are warm and his thumb keeps caressing Ilya's shin and Ilya just feels so warm and safe and happy because he still can't believe he actually gets to have this. With neither of them having to rush, to leave, to pretend that they didn't want to stay in the first place.
So Ilya just nods, stretching and then settling back into the cussions. "Sorry for falling asleep", he says, voice raspy from sleep, eyes already falling closed again. Because, well. He did just fully pass out on Shane. But Shane just smiles at him, squeezing his shin.
"It's okay, Ilya. We have time. Go back to sleep, I'll be here."
And Ilya falls back asleep, safe and happy and with the promise of Shane right next to him.
you can literally see him already making plans omg
while you were busy jacking off & cumming hard. it rained outside beautifully
what do you think i was jacking off to...?
it's not as boring as he anticipated - staring at the fire. it's nice, even. they're shoulder to shoulder and shane is solid against every point: tricep, elbow, hip, knee, ankle. his hand is on ilya's thigh as he tells him about how his dad took him camping when he was 8 years old and taught him how to build a fire.
"ah, so you are arsonist," ilya says, swinging away from the dancing flames to grin at shane, who, predictably, scowls at him. "should i be worried? imagine the headlines! boston star center dies in mystery fire. would be scandalous."
shane's elbow finds ilya's ribs. they're sharp, sharper than they have any right to be, and he wonders how it's taken him 10 years to notice.
"fuck off, city boy." shane tries to keep his scowl in place. he tries, but it transforms to a crinkly eyed smile that catches ilya in the stomach.
but it's easy to fall into familiar habits. they tussle, breathless and buoyant, until shane pulls ilya to his chest and they settle. the fire licks into the darkness. it twists and undulates, and ilya loses himself in the white heat of its center.
"i never went camping," he says eventually as the cherry red glow of the logs shift to ash. "i wanted to but -" he makes a broad sweeping gesture with one hand "-my parents."
as if that explains anything at all.
he slides further down shane's chest and the steady ba thump ba thump of his heartbeat echoes in ilya's every pulse point. if it was possible to tether himself to it, he would.
shane is silent for a long moment, the sweep of his thumb along the bare strip of skin at ilya's waist sending goosebumps up his spine, but then:
"we can go." and he says it easily. he says it like the foundation of this thing they're building isn't fragile. "i know a place. it's - uh - i think you'd like it."
ilya swallows past a lump in his throat and hums. he swings his legs up onto the loveseat to settle his head fully in shane's lap.
"yes, i think i would too," he admits quietly, and doesn't add that he'd like anywhere so long as they were there together.
Things I hope to see in season 2:
Trophy Room? Of course.
Pike kids wedding? Obviously.
"Hold on to something, Rozanov": Hell yeah.
But really, mostly, I hope to see this š„¹:
Jacob, Sir, I beg you.
I BEG you.
the thing about coming out later in life and falling in love after childhood familial death is that it does unlock a new level of grief, one you don't expect. it's more than the fact that they will never know your partner, it's the fact that they never really knew you, and will never have a chance to. you start to grieve not only the person but the self you were to them when they died, and the knowledge that there's something fundamental missing from your memories and your relationship with themāthat shit will haunt you for real. ilya says, "she would have loved you," but he's also thinking, wondering if "she would have loved me," and he'll never know
yeah that's my emotional support sketching therapy
picking up the pieces (ao3 version)
ā a canon divergent fic in which after shane trips and loses the winning goal, the accusations cause him to spiral until ilya cant sit by and any longer.

when voice memos become a thing, Ilya goes INSANE over them. he sends every single message as an audio clip, even if it's just 2 seconds of "Shaaaane I love you." (there are plenty of clips of him cumming, too, which are saved to Shane's phone and replayed in dire situations.)
Shane learns pretty quickly not to play any audio from Ilya in public, both because he doesn't want to blow up Ilya's spot and reveal how secretly sappy his boyfriend is, and because there's no telling when Ilya will launch into sex talk in the middle of an otherwise mundane message.
years into this, he's driving Hayden to the airport after hosting him for a long weekend. a message from Ilya comes in, starting with "hey baby, coach just called..." according to the iPhone speech-to-text description. it's short, anyway, and Shane doesn't want to read while driving on the highway ā he has no choice to press play.
"Hey baby, Coach just called and said practice is pushed back an hour tonight, I told him that's fine for us. Also, I was just showering and I have a hickey on my dick ā"
Shane turns bright red and almost swerves into oncoming traffic trying to turn the phone off.
"Did not know this was possible. You gave me dick hickey," Ilya's voice continues despite Shane's best efforts.
"Not a single word," Shane warns, side eyeing his friend right as Hayden begins to laugh.
I might just be extremely in my thirties now but I simply cannot take any sort of fandom discourse anymore. I barely could before but I am at maximum capacity. just... just watch the thing and enjoy it or whatever, be nice to each other, isn't life hard enough

Alison Greenās advice works.Ā
Alison Green got me all my interviews from 2012 onward, I am reasonably sure.
Alison Green is basically my life guide.
Mine too - she was my most visited website for the first few years of my working career, and I cannot emphasise enough how much her advice helped me navigate how to behave in a work environment. You name it, she has an answer for it. Definitely a life hack.
shane doesnāt have anything against pet names in a relationship, he just doesnāt see himself using them, especially not baby, but one day over the summer theyāre both hiking up a small mountain and through the woods, and ilya tries taking a shortcut that is actually riddled with briars, and his legs get all cut up and he ends up with some thorns stuck in his skin
ilya is whining about it as he takes a seat on a big rock, heās got tiny pricks of blood and little scrapes all over his legs and he is absolutely making it shaneās problem
and shane scoffs a laugh as he kneels down to pry out as many tiny thorns as he can and says ābabyā under his breath, and the thing is that he meant it to be making fun of ilya, but it just comes out so fond and enamored that it sounds genuine
and suddenly ilya is looking down at him with saucer eyes and the bulge in his shorts is growing, and suddenly thereās a hand in shaneās hair and shaneās mouth is watering
so yeah, sue him if he starts calling ilya baby more often
thinking about ilya kissing shane's hand over and over during the drive to his parents' house. gomez addams ass romantic ass loverboy ass
