aren't you worried about teaching penny to disrespect authority? that could literally cause so many problems for you and her in the future
My husband and I have drilled into Pen the same thing that was drilled into both of us from a very young age (now mind you she's 4 so like, she's still learning things)
Respect is not something that is given as a gift, it's something that's earned. You should always be kind but you do not default to respecting someone just because of perceived authority
For those asking about it, from birth we've taught Penny that when we're born we make a deal with all people called "the social contract" that as a person living in society you must always be kind and courteous to those around you and that EVERYONE matters., but that doesn't mean we blindly respect and obey anyone who thinks they're an authority figure- we respect those who respect us.
Sometimes when she starts acting a mess I'll just yell "SOCIAL CONTRACT" and she'll go "OH RIGHT SORRY!" And it's hilarious
Unknown Constellation - Artem Chebokha
the phrase "but i didn't mean to!" in the context of causing harm is kind of redundant to me, because almost nobody means to cause harm. most of us just want to do the right thing. and i don't mean that in a wishy-washy "oh, we're all good deep down" way, i mean that even people who regularly do the most heinous shit imaginable will have a way of justifying it to themselves. the world is not populated by hollywood sadists and psychopaths.
actually i have been thinking about this some more and i want to add on to it:
abuse in caregiving professions (like teaching or nursing) is not solely a result of power dynamics. it's also because people who go into those professions often have a idea of themselves as Good People, and are consequently incapable of recognising or acknowledging when they've hurt someone else. instead, they mentally put 'people who have inconvenienced me' into the Bad People box so they can freely abuse them while maintaining their moral high ground.
i read ross greene a lot when i was working with "difficult" or "behaviourally challenged" children. his refrain is "kids do well if they can" - meaning, in short, that most kids act out only when the demands of a situation exceed their capabilities. punishing them for this is not only cruel but also completely pointless, because they also don't want to be doing what they are doing.
a teacher who believes that there are two categories of people - Good People who Mean Well, and Bad People who Cause Problems on Purpose - is not going to see it that way. they're gonna put themselves in the first category, and the misbehaving kid in the second category. and once they have effectively depersoned the child and placed themselves on a pedestal, the world becomes simple again. because abuse is something that only Bad People do.
whatever. go my fanfic.
A cosmic tribute to my current favourite comment in YouTube history
Something about the bastardization of the story time and time again proves that nobody in power really cares about the people who would resonate with King’s Carrie White. A girl so ugly and repulsive she’s been removed from her own story. The societal need for women and girls to be constantly perceived as attractive is what fuels a fair amount of her torment in the book, but that person isn’t even allowed to exist on the screen. We cannot empathize with her; it isn’t allowed. It’s fascinating to me.
[F]or many engineering and physics applications, a single term of an asymptotic series is sufficient. When more than one is needed, this usually means that the small parameter ε is not really small.
(John P. Boyd)
I’ve said stuff like this before but I think comments like Boyd’s are kind of profound, and a lot of how I think about things is influenced by this idea. Another way of putting it is: “if you’re making an approximation that isn’t a linearization, you should be worried.”
Beware of “approximating” anything you don’t know you’re already close to.
i’ve come to realize that i’m bipolar and struggle heavily with mood swings, which i am working on. i feel like my boyfriend is secretly getting sick of my shit and it really scares me. and idk i kind of wish he loved me more despite it but i can be an emotional vampire when i’m in a depressive episode, i understand if someone could get tired of that. i know objectively my mental illness is my problem and i need to build tools to deal with it, but i can’t say that i won’t have a depressive or manic episode ever again and i get really jealous seeing other friends with boyfriends who are more doting/that are accepting of them being mentally unstable. i’m not sure what i’m asking tbh, am i being unreasonable for thinking this?
I have no idea whether or not you're being unreasonable but I think in all cases a boyfriend should behave like a personal cheerleader. it should be his job to root for you in a sexy little outfit even if you're losing. maybe this boyfriend isn't sturdy enough? maybe he can improve
re that heteropessimism post I reblogged earlier. it really is startling how much women started treating me more warmly immediately after I swapped clothes and names and pronouns. Acquaintances I've had for years suddenly acting much more like friends, strangers or near-strangers smiling and throwing out compliments, etc
it's not a surprise exactly, it's a well-known thing that I was prepared for, but there's a difference between that and experiencing it. and sure some of it is presumably just people trying to be encouraging in a slightly pitying way, but like. pity never made anyone want to hang out with someone more. so that can't be all of it.
fundamentally I think it's just about people not seeing me as a threat! Not a physical threat necessarily, just a social threat, a looming issue that will require caution. There are scripts built around that dynamic that even people who don't really feel threatened at all still follow. And I didn't expect that would ever change, really. Cis women don't ping people as a threat nearly as often, but I expected clocky trans women sure would. and I'm sure we do to some, but not to any of the people I've been running into.
I've structured my entire social posture around the constant awareness that social attention from me got felt as a threat, just like that post described. it's bewildering to feel that just fading away. and most of these people knew me already! But the scripts are embedded awful deep, I guess, so if they're doing me the courtesy of mentally labeling me "girl" then the behavior is different.
and then when I can see and feel that people don't feel threatened, I get friendlier myself, which makes me more likable in a feedback loop. I can't rule out that part of it is from me being startlingly more attractive as a woman, which is obviously a flattering theory, or else that it's from me just being more well-adjusted and happy and therefore better company, which is a very unflattering one in retrospect. but I don't think either one is most of it
Being small Nobody quite recovers from being a child: the asymmetry of power between parents and children always leaves a trace
Higgledy piggledy, turning and turning as gyres are widening, centers unheld,
things fall apart and there’s anarchy everywhere; falcons fly freely and can’t be compelled.
Dimming the tide there is blood in the water and everywhere customs of innocence drowned.
Held by the worst is a fervent intensity; lacking conviction the best run aground.
Surely there must be some kind of apocalypse; surely epiphany must be at hand!
Visions unbidden from Spiritus Mundi of something awakening out on the sand:
Head of a man with a leonine frame and a pitiless gaze that’s as blank as the sun;
sleep became nightmare by passage of centuries long before eons of slumber were done.
Higgledy piggledy, beast of antiquity, imminent, just as the prophecies warn,
shambling slowly but revelatorily, slouching towards Bethlehem, there to be born.
really losing my patience for any 'feminist' statement to the tune of 'we need feminism because women fill a fundamentally different and necessary role than men and will be better at doing x y or z'. like actually i think we need feminism because it is an unbearable death of the spirit by inches to exist in a world where you are not seen as a fully realized human being because of a single cultural determination, and because a world that enshrines such things creates systems that are fundamentally sick to the core
Cannot believe you do not have the most Grocky song of all time on the xeno jerkoff playlist: One Week by the Barenaked Ladies. (It's more of a Grace anthem, but still.)
believe it or not, i did in fact consider putting one week on my xeno jerkoff playlist, because it is such a grace anthem, but i would want it to be this version specifically:
and one for rocky :)
in a hotel room very cautiously removing my clothing slowly and constantly looking around the room shifty and scared as fuck anticipating attacks while a beautiful pair of women sitting side by side on the bed in matching lingerie excitedly but restrained with carefully lowered vioices cheer me on. they say Yes thats it thats how sex works! youre doing it right yeah! youve got it keep going! and im finally down to a sports bra and one tube sock when a car alarm putside startles me and i lunge for the empty handgun on the floor and put it in my mouth while they panic and scramble trying to calm me down petting my hair and cooing gently
whenever i say i don't agree with punishing "difficult" kids, i often get people (usually older people) rolling their eyes, or telling me, "that's optimistic. clearly you haven't worked with really bad kids."
and okay, fair enough - i've never worked in, say, a young offender's institution, or a secure children's home. i've mostly worked in schools. i haven't seen firsthand how bad it can get. i still don't think punishment actually works, and i also think that even kids who misbehave on purpose (and kids do misbehave on purpose; it'd be naive to claim otherwise) aren't doing it because it's "fun". they're doing it because they want to achieve a certain outcome, and they are using the tools that are available to them.
so they need better tools. and better options. and someone to help them figure out how to achieve that same outcome without resorting to theft, manipulation, or violence. that's not easy to do, especially with older children whose behavioural patterns are more entrenched, but it's infinitely more effective and less traumatising than punishment.
i want to illustrate this by talking about a former student of mine. i never actively disliked any of the children i worked with, but i do remember finding this one kid very difficult to warm to. i'd been warned before meeting him that he was a Bad Kid, and i soon found out why. he swore, spat, screamed, threw things, stole or destroyed other people's possessions, and was verbally and physically aggressive towards both me and his classmates.
i could deal with all that. what bothered me was how manipulative he was. he was a bully, but it was hard to catch him at it; he had a knack for sussing out when certain children were having a rough time, and then he'd subtly needle and torment them until they exploded - hitting him or themselves, tearing up their work, kicking desks over, having a sobbing meltdown, etc. after which he would come to me and gleefully inform me that so-and-so had "been bad", clearly with the expectation that i would then punish them (which, obviously, i did not).
this behaviour seemed very calculated, which is why i found it unnerving. but the why kept niggling at me. why was he doing this? what did he want the outcome to be?
and as soon as i thought about it, it was obvious. he wanted validation ("well done for telling me, that was very responsible!"). he wanted to feel powerful. he wanted everyone else to be exactly as angry and unhappy as him. he wanted to not be seen as the Bad Kid - or he wanted his peers to know what it was like to be the Bad Kid. it was intentional, but it was also a product of helplessness and desperation.
as soon as i realised that, i stopped feeling unnerved by his behaviour and just felt profoundly sad. at just seven years old, this kid had already fully internalised the idea that he was Bad, and the only way he could make himself feel better was by forcing other people to be Bad as well. viewed through that lens, his behaviour made complete sense. if your lot in life is to be Bad, and you can't change that, why would you even bother trying to be Good?
fyi from a psychological standpoint punishment is the lease effective form of reinforcement for a lot of reasons, one of which is you may inadvertently reinforce an associated behavior. reinforcement is classified as either positive or negative--something is presented or removed (positive: here is stimulation; negative: I have removed the stimulation).
in order the most *psychologically sound* reinforcement methods are positive reward (you've shared your crayons with your friend, have a cookie) > negative reward (you shared your crayons so you don't have to clean up--negative reward is pretty tricky to pinpoint but really effective if the cause/effect path is clear) > negative punishment (you didn't share your crayons so I'm taking them away) > positive punishment (you didn't share your crayons so I'm going to spank you).
it is *effective* to hit a child in that it will likely stop the behavior you want and pretty quickly compared to positive reward, which typically requires a lot of frequent intervention. it will also reinforce a LOT of associated behavior, the most damning of which is Adults Will Hurt Me. kids can be taught these maladaptive patterns REALLY easily bc kids are sponges, and like OP points out: it's almost always because the adults in their life aren't interested in putting in the work that it takes to teach them healthy patterns.
i am of the sincere belief that if ur on ur computer a lot you should visually customize it to high hell and back not just for funsies but also because it has literally made me less depressed before. its kind of like how rearranging your bedroom is good for your brain, yknow. i do stuff like this every few months
and if anyone wants to follow suit
