KILLING EVE 1.08 | God, I'm Tired
"It doesn't have to be happy to be good"
How about "it doesn't have to be tragic to be good"
Or "it doesn't have to be bittersweet to be meaningful"
OR "It doesn't have to end on some vague idea of souls and reincarnation for the characters' love to be deep and valid"
"The trouble is that we have a bad habit, encouraged by pedants and sophisticates, of considering happiness as something rather stupid. Only pain is intellectual, only evil interesting. This is the treason of the artist: a refusal to admit the banality of evil and the terrible boredom of pain. If you can’t lick ‘em, join ‘em. If it hurts, repeat it. But to praise despair is to condemn delight, to embrace violence is to lose hold of everything else. We have almost lost hold; we can no longer describe a happy man, nor make any celebration of joy."
Ursula K LeGuin (the queen of fiction)
This rang true for me — as so many things Ursula LeGuin said and wrote do — and it makes me sad that this lazy tv trope probably did influence our ending. Giving us complicated joy that isn’t implied or hidden as an ending would have a been a bold and wonderful choice!
controversial opinion i think even saying "omg the climax of (movie) was so good" or "ugh the ending of (tv show) sucks ass" should count as spoilers. babygirl i wanna go in with zero expectations stop expectening my expectations.
accidentally clicked on a horrible good omens fanfic very ooc major character death memory loss human au. yeah on amazon prime
good bad job that's the worst anyone's ever done it
In a period where people already feel trapped by institutions, authoritarianism, inequality, ecological dread, etc., it's no wonder the "your only hope is obliteration" ending is landing so badly. A story that once said: "the world is flawed but worth saving" suddenly pivoting to: "burn it down and maybe something better comes after" doesn't hit me as beautiful and profound. It hits me as bleak and nihilistic.
it surprises me when people call the ending “not homophobic” simply because it leaves two men in a romantic relationship. the problem is not that anthony and asa fell in love with each other. the problem is that aziraphale and crowley, characters with one of the most unusual and deeply developed queer stories in modern fantasy, were sacrificed for it
a romance between two men does not automatically make a story good representation. especially when those characters are reduced to a set of generic traits: they are kind, they love each other, and that is basically it. we have already seen countless stories like that, and this is not just about gay relationships. people loved aziraphale and crowley not because they were a couple. they loved them as individuals: complex, contradictory characters with their own dynamic, history, and personalities that developed over many years. that is why it feels so strange to watch them be replaced with a flatter version of the same idea
to me, bad representation is not the absence of a kiss. it is when unique queer characters are erased in favor of a safer and more conventional romantic story. that is a disservice to the fandom
the thing about memory
can't stop thinking about how a finale ostensibly in tribute to Pratchett ends with the obliteration of memory--and with it, the existence of the characters he gave us. given the craters left by Alzheimer's, in his life and the lives of those who loved him, that ending strikes me as especially cruel.
... Hadn't thought about that aspect. Oof
And it especially reach, coming from the author who coined GNU.
A man is not dead while his name is still spoken
don't forget nobody will say aziraphale's name in the new universe
this is what punched me in the stomach, not unlike a certain enforcing angel (hi Sandalphon) when "Asa" introduces himself.
Aziraphale's name was a typo in the early development of Good Omens (the novel). it's a happy accident, one that encapsulates so much of who he is: not a standard-issue principality, but a wellspring of well-loved mistakes and warm-hearted intent.
