“Is it okay if I draw fanart of your fanfic?👉🏼👈🏼”
My brother in Christ we shall have a spring wedding

one of my favorite stupid things to do in fanfic is to throw two characters together who literally never interact. and then give them an entire, fleshed-out relationship dynamic that exists nowhere but my own head. yes they’ve literally never spoken. yes their relationship is important to me. hope this helps.
so this one has breached containment a bit but like, in a fun way. i love reading the tags and having no idea who you’re talking about but reveling in our shared experience of silly fanfics. or, sometimes, KNOWING who you’re talking about and going “dang that is niche love that”. please continue to tag this with every fictional character dynamic that never happened that you’ve gotten invested in I love them. also please continue calling out your friends I love that too
Hmmm...
AU where instead of just Ingo, the entire Super Singles Line Train got transported to Hisui at once, which means Ingo and all of the depot agents who were on the train get thrown into Hisui. This is before they started accepting trainers, they're not scheduled to pick anyone up for another 20 minutes, when they are meant to pull into Gear Station. Except they're not even halfway to their destination before shit goes wrong.
Meanwhile the residents of Hisui are just watching a space-time distortion when suddenly a giant fucking metal MONSTER speeds out of it and crashes into a bunch of trees before finally stopping and tipping over. Ingo is at the front of the train and gets hit with the most damage, so he hits his head pretty bad and gets quite a few broken bones. The other train cars were a bit banged up but everyone got off with relatively light injuries in comparison to Ingo. Ingo loses his memory, but the other depot agents don't.
Since they're all wearing a uniform, and calling Ingo "sir," the residents of Hisui are like... did an entire CLAN get displaced by the space-time distortions?!
And the depot agents roll with this because. They don't think it's a good idea to tell these people that they're from the future. Also they're a bit distracted by their VERY injured boss and the whole situation they found themselves placed in.
Among my acquaintances, I am one of the better bakers. Therefore I am “the one who bakes”. Gathering of the Dutch-Indo elders? I will produce a spekkoek with no less than twenty layers. Nephew’s special day? I will make his favorite; macarons filled with chocolate ganache. Teen wistfully wishes for a Minecraft cake? I gotchu fam.
No one ever said “she’s already baked a dessert once and we loved it, so obviously we won’t ask her to bake again; tell her to make spaghetti this time”.
Write that trope again.
“Wow! I loved this story! I hope the author never writes anything remotely like it ever again!!” - Words that have never come out of any reader’s mouth, ever
You know what I don’t get? When fanfic authors apologize for long chapters. It’s like? You gave me bonus content, for free, and you’re sorry about it? Bruh. I have already named my firstborn after you. Dude.
You know what else I don’t get? When they apologize for short updates. It’s like: look at these new words I gave you! Sorry I didn’t give you even more free words. Bro, that’s at least two words that I did not have yesterday. For free. Dude. Thank you.
And another thing: when people drop out of nowhere with a surprise update and then apologize for it taking a while. Like, dude, I wasn’t expecting anything, and you gave me words. I thought this fic was abandoned, but wait: there’s more. You just popped in and reminded me that this is a Good Fic that I should probably reread. You made my goshdarn day.
Basically fanfic writers are under no obligation to publish anything so when they do update it’s always a net positive because the story is longer now, and I have something to read, so thank you so much to everyone who writes fic at whatever pace or quantity they want.
On another note, people have absolutely no right to be angry at fanfic authors for having shorter updates than usual or straying from their usual type of content. It infuriates me when content creators have to ask their fans to stop requesting a specific type of content when it’s clearly not what they want to do. THEY ARE NOT OBLIGATED TO CREATE FOR YOU OR CATER TO YOUR NEEDS. Writing, drawing, and CREATING should be fun and you have no right to demand things from someone who’s doing you a favor by creating anything in the first place!!
Gripping a sword overview
I like how this is both art reference and a guide to more efficiently smite your enemies
goncharov fanfiction isnt even fanfiction you are just writing fiction you have been tricked into writing stories
So my problem with most ‘get to know your character’ questioneers is that they’re full of questions that just aren’t that important (what color eyes do they have) too hard to answer right away (what is their greatest fear) or are just impossible to answer (what is their favorite movie.) Like no one has one single favorite movie. And even if they do the answer changes.
If I’m doing this exercise, I want 7-10 questions to get the character feeling real in my head. So I thought I’d share the ones that get me (and my students) good results:
What is the character’s go-to drink order? (this one gets into how do they like to be publicly perceived, because there is always some level of theatricality to ordering drinks at a bar/resturant)
What is their grooming routine? (how do they treat themselves in private)
What was their most expensive purchase/where does their disposable income go? (Gets you thinking about socio-economic class, values, and how they spend their leisure time)
Do they have any scars or tattoos? (good way to get into literal backstory)
What was the last time they cried, and under what circumstances? (Good way to get some *emotional* backstory in.)
Are they an oldest, middle, youngest or only child? (This one might be a me thing, because I LOVE writing/reading about family dynamics, but knowing what kinds of things were ‘normal’ for them growing up is important.)
Describe the shoes they’re wearing. (This is a big catch all, gets into money, taste, practicality, level of wear, level of repair, literally what kind of shoes they require to live their life.)
Describe the place where they sleep. (ie what does their safe space look like. How much (or how little) care / decoration / personal touch goes into it.)
What is their favorite holiday? (How do they relate to their culture/outside world. Also fun is least favorite holiday.)
What objects do they always carry around with them? (What do they need for their normal, day-to-day routine? What does ‘normal’ even look like for them.)
I've seen quite a few people lately apologising for being behind on their reading of fics from friends.
Can I just say, my fics aren't going anywhere. I write for myself, and share them to hopefully give some other people comfort and joy. Whether you get that joy the day it's posted, or a week later, a month a year, it doesn't matter - that's the good thing about fics. They're there when you need them.
Reading / Reacting to my work is not the token you insert to receive my friendship ❤️
Since I’ve seen some people say this as well: don’t be afraid of kudosing or commenting on old fics. There’s no such thing as late. It’s great to know someone enjoyed it.
I think a surprising amount of writers don’t realize that tragedies are supposed to be cathartic. They’re intended to result in a purging of emotion, a luxurious cry; the sorrow caused by a great tragedy is akin to fear caused by a good horror movie – it’s a “safe” sorrow, one that is actually satisfying to the audience. It can still be beautiful! It’s isn’t supposed to just be salting the earth so nothing can grow.
But that’s how you get grimdark: writers who don’t realize that they’re supposed to be doing something with the audience instead of to the audience.
#i once heard a lecture where someone said that the great appeal of tragedy is to see terrible things happen to people you’re supposed to#empathize with and see yourself in#and that the catharsis comes from seeing someone’s life go horribly wrong and still have the author hold your hand and tell you#‘this story mattered. even though it had a sad ending it still mattered. even if you don’t succeed your attempts matter’#grimdark tells you that the world sucks and nothing you do matters#well-written tragedy tells you that sometimes the world sucks but everything you do matters so so much#your story is still worth telling even if you never achieve that happy ending#or if you lose it along the way#people have inherent value and their stories deserve to be told no matter if they turn out okay or not#and in a reality that has no concept of ‘fair’ that shit just hits good man!!! feels good!!!!! it’s COMFORTING
You have the ability to see into the past. You can only observe past events, not change them. You’re helping the police solve a murder. As you’re describing what happened, the killer suddenly turns around and seems to look you straight in the eye. “I know you’re watching”.
