Only now does it strike me that a lot of egg joke discourse is people having two entirely separate conversations, completely talking past each other.
On the one hand, we have people saying it's fine to make "have you considered you might not be cis" comments...about friends. Because sometimes someone is giving egg vibes, consciously or subconsciously, as a means of looking for support, looking for the people they know and trust to still be cool with it or tell them what they're thinking is a valid option, and it's good to turn toward those bids and offer support.
On the other hand, we have people saying not to make those kinds of comments or jokes....about strangers. Because you don't know them, they might be trans in a totally different direction than you think, and second-guessing someone you don't know about their own gender - often in a way that treats nonbinary identities as a fake thing, a phase, just a step in a pipeline for people with only one foot out of the closet - is not the compassionate trans-positive action that a small but frustrating number of people think it is.
And the thing is, both of these things are true. You can't treat strangers the way you treat your bestie! You will do more harm than good if you try!
I just wonder how many internet slapfights would not happen if people could recognize that these ideas don't contradict each other; they're different advice for different situations.
Ohhhhh my god u found out somebody has a physically impossible fetish? should we tell everyone? Should we write a callout post?should we invite sigmund freud
If the term "proshitters" exist, does that also mean there's "propissers" as well?
One thing antis are good at doing is pissing and crying about fictional content.
Procummers
Antis need to stop acting like we're the only weird ones when they're saying shit like this. This is over a fictional character btw. Diluc from Genshin.
[Image ID: Two twitter screenshots. Twitter user saying "at the end of the day, you're still claiming to be the wife of someone who: 1. doesn't know you, 2. will never know you, and 3. can't reciprocate the feeling. that's textbook parasociality." And then says "yeah because it's worth examining why you attach yourself to characters who, being fictional, don't have the capacity to reject you". End ID]
is the next word we gotta put on the high shelf "parasocial" now
Do you have any tips on how to ethically consume media
put a sheet over your head so god cant see you
I was reading some comments earlier
Do people judge a book by its cover? They absolutely do. They take one look at this, and they either often instantly hate it or love it.
Talking about how things should be is just yelling into the void. There is just reality. And this is the reality of being a self-published indie author.
People make complete conclusions based off of incomplete information. In this case, my book, there are no adults pressuring the boy into getting any surgery. There's no mention of surgery at all even. This person is thinking of a children's book written by a very popular political figure. Some people have had the courtesy to ask me if it's like that book. It's not at all. It's not even political. It's a story told from the perspective of a kid who grows up knowing they are very different and yet can tell no one about it. Even saying a word about it would bring all of his deepest and darkest fears into reality.
The challenge was to make the story as dark and scary as I could without ever going too far for a children's book. There are already some scary children's books and movies out there that prove what's possible, and I worked with my illustrator, Marta, to push it as far as we could go. There's one page we had to re-do almost completely because even I said that's a bit much.
But I'm very happy with the final result because we also got to do so many fun and colorful pages like this.
There will be plenty more drive-by reviews as the book continues to grow and grow. They take one look and see a soapbox to express all of their disappointments and frustrations in life.
I think they might be scared of the book. The world they grew up in is slowly fading away day by day, and it's all they have come to know. They've been around for so long that everything has become a bore to them, and the only remaining pleasure is to escape into the past in order to better preserve it. I can oddly relate, actually.
So the book is on Amazon, and you can watch the whole thing for free on YouTube as well. If you get the chance, let me know what you think. Literally, watching it for free and then giving it a simple rating on Amazon is the best way to support the book. But I also love waking up to reviews like this every day.
People against piracy fail to realize that no, I can’t just ‘buy it.’ They stopped making DVDs and Blu-Rays. They’re barely offering digital copies for download. I am not spending money I could use for food or bills to pay for a subscription service just so I can always have access to a beloved piece of media. Especially not when the service will remove media on a whim without concern for how the loss of access to that piece will make its artistic conservation nigh impossible.
For example, I recently learned that Disney+ had an original film called Crater. It’s scifi, family friendly, and seems cool - I would love to buy it as a holiday gift for my little brother! But: it’s exclusive to D+ and THEY REMOVED IT LITERALLY MONTHS AFTER ITS RELEASE.
The ONLY way I can directly access this film is through piracy. The ONLY available ‘copies’ of this film are hosted on piracy websites. Disney will NEVER release it in theaters, or as something to buy, and it may NEVER return to the streaming service. It will be LOST because we aren’t allowed to purchase it for personal viewing. If I can’t pay to own it, I won’t pay for the privilege of losing it when corporate decides to put it in a vault.
So yes, I’m going to pirate and support piracy.
Guess who got disqualified from the Hugo Awards for unclear, most possibly political reasons!!
Award admin Dave McCarty's response to people asking why:
But this email is apparently just bouncing everything back so here's the full list of the admin team:
We've now got commentary (and some savage out-calling) from another of the affected parties.
I don't know if I'd say the Hugos in general have lost any of their prestige, but clearly this year will carry an asterisk in perpetuity.
Posting this more because I think it's funny then because I think it addresses the issue in any significant way. But like,
Yeah I'll bet you apologize...
Why is this guy acting like him apologizing is a monumental EVENT 😭😭 And "old habits"?? So he's a habitual ableist asshole and he knows that??
And today's bit of the story is:
https://locusmag.com/2024/01/mccarty-standlee-and-others-censured/
Worldcon Intellectual Property (W.I.P.), the California non-profit that holds the service marks of the World Science Fiction Society including “Hugo Award,” issued this statement in a press release on January 31, 2024:
W.I.P. takes very seriously the recent complaints about the 2023 Hugo Award process and complaints about comments made by persons holding official positions in W.I.P. In connection with these concerns, W.I.P. announces the actions listed below. There may be other actions taken or to be taken that are not in this announcement.
Dave McCarty has resigned as a Director of W.I.P.
Kevin Standlee has resigned as Chair of the W.I.P. Board of Directors (BoD).
W.I.P. has censured or reprimanded the following persons, listed in alphabetic order, for the reason given:
Dave McCarty – censured for his public comments that have led to harm of the goodwill and value of our marks and for actions of the Hugo Administration Committee of the Chengdu Worldcon that he presided over.
Chen Shi – censured for actions of the Hugo Administration Committee of the Chengdu Worldcon that he presided over.
Kevin Standlee – reprimanded for public comments that mistakenly led people to believe that we are not servicing our marks.
Ben Yalow – censured for actions of the Hugo Administration Committee of the Chengdu Worldcon that he presided over.
Donald Eastlake has been elected Chair of the W.I.P. BoD.
Please note that each year’s World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) is run by a separate organization which administers the Hugo Awards for that year. The Chengdu 2023 Worldcon has asked that any specific questions about the administration of the 2023 Hugo Awards be sent to [email protected].
(For media inquiries on topics related to W.I.P. other than the specifics of the 2023 Hugo Awards, you may contact [email protected].)
This statement follows widespread outcry regarding seeming irregularities in the Hugo Awards nomination data, including several entries ruled ineligible by the Hugo Awards administrators, among them R.F. Kuang’s Babel, fan writer nominee Paul Weimer, Astounding nominee Xiran Jay Zhao, and Neil Gaiman’s Sandman, for reasons that are not explained on either the site or the document.
"We need more mental health acceptance and awareness!" Y'all still call ppl with cluster b disorders evil 💀

No.
Not even if you're a loser, baby! ❤️
id rather you have cringy but honest interests than try and act like everything youve ever loved was in an ironic way cause you think that love for simple or useless or silly things is beneath you . pathetic! embrace existence with both hands coward
“I’m cringe but you’re mean and that’s worse” changed my fucking life.
I'm not sure how to tell the pro-censorship people this, but squicky, badly handled art about dark topics is a PREREQUISITE to deeply moving art about the same dark topics.
You aren't encouraging writers to include more nuance in their works, or reevaluate their world-view. You're telling new writers not to try.
I’m not sure if this has been asked before, but for Rape/Non-Con warnings: is it customary to tag only “onscreen” incidences, or any mentions of rape should have that warning (eg mentions of past incidences)?
--
This should be somewhere in the AO3 FAQs.
Generally, if it's offscreen, people use other tags like 'mentions of X' or 'past X'. There are a bunch of filterable tags for things like this.
There's also "implied/referenced X" as well. You can find these tag formats for a whole bunch of sensitive topics such as self-harm, suicide, rape/non-con, etc.
Just a quick not friendly reminder: someone who has apologized for past mistakes, made amends for past actions, and clearly no longer holds past beliefs, is a far better person than one who digs up old dirt and uses a person's past that no longer exists against them.
Despite everything, and all my accounts, I still can't post polls :'3
