God this
Ok I want to say something controversial
But you are responsible for your own safe spaces. You can block tags, block words, block people.
âBut i thought fandom was supposed to be a safe spaceâ âyeah you have to curate it.
Unfortunately one personsâs safe space may be another personsâ trigger. Thatâs ok. Simply block them, block the tag, block the word etc. They can do the same for you.
Maybe Iâm just out of touch, but Iâve been around since the days of âdonât like, donât readâ and thatâs a good philosophy. If it squicks you, scroll past. If it causes you anxiety or upset, block! Plenty of people are responsive if you ask them to tag an upsetting trigger. And if theyâre dicks about it, block em.
Since different people have different needs, one personâs safe space will be anotherâs Trauma Central.
I donât know who said it first, but âI need to be able to express my anger without shameâ and âI need to be away from yelling and loud noisesâ are both valid needs people can have for a safe space that really arenât compatible with each other.
So are âI need to process my traumaâ and âI need to not meet any trauma.â
Or âI want a safe space to tell/read the stories that speak to meâ and âthose stories are distressing to me.â
Insisting that your needs are the only needs anyone should have is not a safe space, itâs its own act of violence.
You donât get to make others homeless to make the universe your personal safe space.
Insisting that your needs are the only needs anyone should have is not a safe space, itâs its own act of violence.
Itâs abusive and it can harm others. If you find yourself doing this, please, you really need to rethink your behavior and values.

Finally some useful research being done
Writing is hard. It stretches your creativity until you see holes in it, or worse, your plot. It can be lonely. It can be tiring. It can hurt your brain, and your pride, and your heart. It can feel like the worst thing you've ever done.
But it's worth it.
You're worth it.
So take care of yourself, okay? Take breaks, drink fluids, do whatever self-care you can do, no matter how small. Remember, there are people who care, and there are readers who need you - your story, your perspective, your impact.
And if you don't hear this from anyone else today, I'm so proud of you.
@todaysbird
Sometimes you see somebodyâs read on a piece of media and youâre just like, okay, coming to that conclusion requires several very specific misunderstandings to happen in a very specific order, and Iâd be fascinated to get some insight into the exact set of prior experiences you brought to this text such that making all of those assumptions in a row seemed reasonable at the time.
dont take the things im annoyed by too seriously im currently pissed off at how badly-designed the golden girls' coffee pot is
look at this shit. 90 degrees betty white fighting for her life and still 2 mugs of coffee stuck in there
Canât believe Jane Austen wrote Pride and Prejudice in the 2000s
And in 2015 Emily Brontë released literary clsssic Wuthering Heights
Thank God someone paved the way for themâŠ
if you think jk was the first woman author, you donât actually care about women authors.
Mary Shelley didnt fuck on her parents graves for this level of disrespect
Murasaki Shikibu didnât invent the novel for this.
Christine de Pizan did not sit down at her desk and write The Book of the City of Ladies, advocating for womenâs education and finding value in women of all social classes and backgrounds, in 1405 for this.
đ¶SHAHARIZADE HAD A THOUSAND TALESđ¶
ThisâŠâŠâŠ.isnât even true in 20th century fantasy or childrens books? Pierce, Lackey, Applegate, McCaffrey, Bradley, Butler, whomst?
Casual reminder that
a woman was the first known author/poet in 2300BC - Enheduanna
the first novel in recorded history was written by a woman in 1010AD - Murasaki Shikibu
the earliest example of science fiction was written by a woman in 1666 - Margaret Cavendish
horror science fiction was popularised by a teenage girl in 1818 - Mary Shelley
a Scotswoman expanded childrensâ stories from moralising tales into anarchic adventures in the mid 1800s, well before it became popular in the early 20th century - Catherine Sinclair
the masked/costumed hero archetype that inspired Batman and Zorro was created by a woman in 1905 - Baroness Emma Orczy
And while she is problematic as all get out, we all know who is to blame for popularising Boarding School fiction (which is a huge inspiration of She Who Must Not Be Named) from the 1930s onwards - Enid Blyton
And do I even need to mention what a badass pioneer Ursula Le Guin was for women author in the fantasy/sci-fi genre?
Not to mention Agatha Christie is literally second only to Shakespeare in terms of works sold â 4 billion compared to JKRâs paltry 500 millionÂ
S A P P H O
To elaborate on Sappho, she was so prominent in the ancient world, male poets wanted to be her, they wanted to have the talent at writing love poetry that she had.
See, especially, Catullus in ancient Rome. There was a reason he called his girlfriend âLesbia.â
Sylvia Plath, Adrienne Rich, Octavia Butler, Sandra Cisneros, Margaret Atwood, Toni Morrison, Anne Rice (sigh), Emily Dickinson(!!!!), JUDY BLUME, Virginia Woolf, Collette, The Brontes, Marie de France, Louisa May Alcott, Alice Walker, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Harper Lee, Daphne DuMaurier, Laura Ingalls Wilder, L.M. Montgomery, Shirley Jackson, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Simone de Beauvior, Anne Sexton, Audre Lorde, and Marion Zimmer Bradley just to name a few
Void cat but space, with moon for eyes~
Iâve been thinking about âyou canât pin joy like a mothâ all day.
Some people are really committed to misunderstanding you, and taking your words in bad faith.
And nothing you can say is going to change their mind and sometimes the kindest thing you can do for yourself is to just not engage with them anymore.
