How does everybody feel about their job?
What do you do for work that either makes you want to jump out of bed on a morning to face the day, or leaves you wide awake throughout the night dreading what the next day will bring?
Me, I HATE my job. I hate it with a passion, so much so, that it consumes me. I wonāt say what I do directly, but I will say that I am office based.
It's such a shame that I feel this way, because in all honesty, my job pays well. Money is the reason why I have stuck it out so long. If it was to pay any less, then Iād have probably left the job a long time ago.
I hate my job, but I am trying to do something about it. I am pursuing new avenues and over the past couple of months I have had a couple of job interviews, but unfortunately I wasnāt successful.
The jobs I applied for cut my wage by half. HALF! This is how desperate I am to get away from the company that I work for. In hindsight it was probably for the best, because I really donāt think my bank balance or lifestyle is ready to take that kind of wage drop, but in desperate times of unhappiness, it seemed like the right thing to do.
I hate being office based. I hate being restricted to a desk. I hate sitting amongst other people. Annoying people at that. I have made a few friends over the years working here, and that I am grateful for. But for the most part, I am bitterly unhappy here.
I was not born to sit. I was born to move. I was born to be challenged. I wasnāt born to answer the phone. I wasnāt born to have lengthy email conversations and meetings about meetings.
I want to be active, I want to be outside. I want to challenge myself physically, and when Iām getting tired, I want to challenge myself mentally and tell myself that āI can do thisā
I work out a lot, or at least try to. I have been doing Martial Arts (freestyle kickboxing) for 3 years and I am preparing to take my Black Belt grading. Over the past 18 months or so I have discovered running. Over the past 4 months, I have really grown to love running and it has become a great release for me.
If I could do a job where I am active, and it makes me feel as good as I do when I am working out, then I would be so, so much happier. Iām not getting any younger (I am 38 next year, eeeek!) So I feel if Iām going to make the change then it needs to be now.
I took the plunge last month and I enrolled at college to study night classes in Fitness and Physical Activity. Last week, I had my first class. It was a very daunting prospect going back to āschoolā so to speak. It has been 20 years or so since I was classed as a student! It felt so good though, I felt like I was finally taking the step towards something more positive.
The first part of the course is only 13 weeks, but when I have passed Level 1 I can then progress onto Level 2 which is a yearās additional study. I feel proud of myself for actively trying to change my situation. Unfortunately, I am a bit of an impatient person and the thought of having to continue working in my current environment until I have the relevant qualifications to apply for a more desirable job is killing me.
Once I have passed both Levels 1 and 2, I will be qualified to work in a gym environment. Even if I donāt do it as a full time job, the thought of doing it part time, or instructing evening classes to break up the monotony of working a desk based job is something that fills me with a little bit of hope.
I really want to make the positive change. We spend far too long at work to be unhappy. Too many things have happened in my life to settle for this state of unhappiness that my job dissatisfaction gives me.
I used to be jealous of people that truly love their work. I was envious of people who had ālandedā their dream job. But, despite a lucky few the reality is they have probably worked hard to get to where they are today and they deserve to have that job satisfaction.
One day, I will proudly tell people what I do for living. As for now, I hate being pigeon holed by my job title. My job title isnāt me. Donāt ask me what I do for a living, because right now, it doesnāt define me. It is not who I am.
