I like to think about when "it" happens
Maybe not the event itself but the aftermath, when his family, whoever isn't there atleast, is notified that it happened. I can see the shock, the horror, the sorrow on everyone's faces, both at the news and the realization that someone will have to dawn the cape and cowl and take over the mission. And everyone turns to Dick.
After the funeral, after the city begins to realize what has happened, he does it. Dick emerges from the dark shadows of the batcave before his friends, his family, his partner, and they all see those pointy ears, the billowing cape, and that dark and glimmering symbol on his chest. Some would only stare, others would tear up, I can't begin to imagine how Damian would respond. But they all look and realize that it was destiny all along.
Imagine how that would change the future for Neo Gotham. It would be Dick who would eventually let the myth off the bat die. Until Terry comes along, and he sees him, hears his story, and it all comes flooding back. Dick had watched the worst thing in the world happen to the most important people in his, Bruce knew the hell that was, and held his hand through the fire, to ensure he came out on the other side better than he did. But after bruce died he was thrown right back to those firey gates all over again, and he didn't have a hand to hold that time. Now before him stood a young man, suffering the same way he did, the same way Bruce did, and he would realize, its his turn to hold the hand of another.
This would also mean we'ed get to see gilf starfire, which would be p baller if u ask me
