I just know the arts game on Erid goes crazy. Especially fiber arts like lace-making—I like to imagine that they have huge, complex pieces that incorporate xenonite and precious stones. They convey stories, culture, and memories.
Bobbin lace is probably the most common. You're most likely to have a shirt with those decals on it or use it for decoration. Having that many limbs makes it easy to sit down and make a design; it's a common gift for parents to give to their grown children expecting pebbles.
Needle lace however is a lot more complex. Huge, intricate pieces that take years to make even with 5 arms and a crystalline brain. A finished lace tapestry can take years with several Eridian lace-makers who dedicate their lives to the craft. Thrums are often used to get the product done faster, with 5 Eridians on each end working outward and communicating in sync. It's a beautiful process to watch. A traditional technique is to start at a single point and work outwards with no plan, making a complex and unique piece. These are rare and usually owned by Eridians with high-ranking jobs.
At the memorial for Blip-A's crew is a massive tapestry meticulously created over the course of a decade. Small pieces of the families' carapaces have been woven in alongside an intricate, sectioned pattern. The piece can be read like a book—the lace echos back the frequencies of the crew's voices, immortalizing them in Eridian history forever.
In Rocky and Adrian's home is a tapestry from the ceremony of the night they mated, a common tradition for Eridian couples. Over the course of the event, the Eridians in attendance work off the hexagon representing the couple's courtship. No one involved is usually a master craftsman, so the work is a little all over the place. It functions as a quest-book, echoing the memory off the walls of their home.
It's an art that can never be lost—it's so ingrained in their culture. Lacework is everywhere you look on Erid and one of the most common arts for sale (next to glasswork, something just as complex). But then Grace shows up and tells them that their work is beautiful and while he can't read it like the other Eridian's can, he's able to see the colors. He's frequently "borrowed" from the bio-dome to consult on projects after that.

Ummmm... Isn't that kind of a standard flavour?
Listen can I be a sap for one sec? Can you hear me out?
Do you understand how much it meant to me that Stratt was never seen in anything other than comfy loose business clothes in the movie? Her every outfit is layers, loose pants, a turtleneck sweater, scarves. Ever article of clothing is about her comfort alone, literally not one bit of it serves any other function.
Do you understand how rare that is? What that means? To me and probably every other person who was raised to feel like their body was a display model only? Other characters that might have comfy outfits inevitably have this moment where they suddenly dress like a bombshell, like it's their debut as a romantic candidate.
But not Eva Stratt. She got to be interesting purely for the person she is. We got to see HER. Focus on her character and not her body. To this DAY it blows my mind. Every time I see her dressed this way that feeling of being bowled over by it renews.
Eva Stratt continues to take my breath away for all the right reasons. That woman is ethereal and I can say that about her character without every having known what her body even looks like. Thank god.
I noticed this too, but only now did I really understand it!
It would have been so easy to give her the most expensive suits and high heels, she's the most powerful person on Earth at that time. She could have looked so very presentable.
But not Eva Stratt. That's not her. She doesn't care about presentable. She doesn't care about conventions and expectations. All she cares about is getting the job done in the most efficient and most auspicious way. She can't do that when the bra that gives her excellent cleavage pinches her all the time, her feet protest every step along the hallways of Stratt's Vat and her dress is just that little bit too short to leave it unattended for more than 10 minutes. To be honest, I wouldn't have taken her seriously in a costume like that, and neither would have the people she kidnapped, blackmailed and basically just dragged into the project.
The way she dresses clearly states who she is. She doesn't hide behind a suit that looks like everybody else's. She doesn't hide behind conventions and empty word shells.
And to me, this is one of the puzzle pieces why I don't hate her for the decisions she made. The way she dresses makes me trust her, in a way. If she wore high heels, dresses and suits I wouldn't have trusted her, but she shows up ready to do the work herself if need be. The only reason she doesn't is that she made sure there are better people than her on the job.
Again, the costume department's decisions were so absolutely spot on, so fundamentally right, it's just *chef's kiss*
I can't stress enough how much I miss StumbleUpon
StumbleUpon once sent me to a supercut of Lion King, Lion King 1 1/2, and Lion King II, the main edit being that the scenes of Lion King and Lion King 1 1/2 were interspersed so that they happened in the order they actually happened.
stumbleupon not existing anymore can be directly traced to a dramatic decline in my mental health, I could do a thesis on it.
bestie stumbleupon very much still exists its just called cloudhiker now. i use it all the time.
mini compilation of suggestions from the replies:
The Bored Button - "Press the Bored Button and be bored no more."
The Useless Web
Cloudhiker - "Discover the most interesting, weird and awesome websites of the Internet" (not really a rebrand, it's a different person running it but they have the same intention in mind)
Astronaut.io - "These videos come from YouTube. They were uploaded in the last week and have titles like DSC 1234 and IMG 4321. They have almost zero previous views. They are unnamed, unedited, and unseen (by anyone but you)."
Marginalia - "This is an independent DIY search engine that focuses on non-commercial content, and attempts to show you sites you perhaps weren't aware of in favor of the sort of sites you probably already knew existed."
I used to love take me to a useless website
Love that Ryland Grace is the opposite of so many male protagonist "heroes" in media and yet he's still so incredibly brave, resilient, and strong. That flimsy little science teacher saves the day.
But he also,
Throws fits when things don't go his way. Not a "I'm a bad bitch" destroying everything-type fit, but tossing a trash can, breaking a screen-type fit.
Cries. A lot.
Pleads. He begs.
Doesn't answer the call to action.
Shows weakness. Being a coward and being fearful are two things he defines himself with.
Doesn't end up with the girl. In fact, that girl isn't even interested and he isn't, either.
Cherishes friendship over a romantic plot or something stereotypically brave like, "I'm going to save Rocky so I can save his world." No, he wants to save his friend, first and foremost.
Squeaks. He squeals. He screams, loudly and very high pitched. He whines. He complains. He physically struggles to open a jar. He's clumsy as hell. He makes some of the least graceful noises one can make.
Is not afraid to be the primitive species lowkey.
I love him and everything he stands for as a male protagonist. Men need to know that they can be just like Ryland Grace and still be just as much of a hero and a man.
In terms of healthy masculinity (or being a human in general), he is at the top with Aragorn, and I do not say this lightly.
stop fucking using the word psychotic to describe bad behaviour and violence already god fucking damn it
oh my god i'm so tired psychotic does not mean violent it does not mean angry or erratic. it refers to a person suffering from psychosis, a loss of touch with reality that includes hallucinations and/or delusions. psychotic people are not inherently violent and y'all need to understand how much stigma you create when you again and again incorrectly use the word psychotic without even thinking about it
would appreciate if non-psychotic people could reblog this
