2021 be like: I'm thriving. I'm miserable. I am revisiting old hobbies. None of my hobbies are fun. I'm walking a lot. I have a vitamin D deficiency. The pandemic has lasted one month. The pandemic is over. The pandemic has lasted for 10 years. I am completely isolated. I talk to my friends constantly. I love working from home. Fourteen months have vanished from existence. I have a repetitive stress injury from working from home. I'm sick to death of working from home. Everyone is getting vaccinated. There's three new variants that no-one is vaccinated from. Stay indoors. Start going out. Outdoor dining. Restart the economy. Don't touch. Isn't it great that we're finally going back to normal?
My toxic trait : I find it so offending when the person I hate, picks up one of my interests or starts listening to that one underrated artist I love. It's like sharing your room with the cousin whom you absolutely detest for some reason.
thinking about that WoW epidemic
i was telling my dad, ever the skeptic, about corrupted blood back in March at the start of lockdown, and how the cdc studied it. how it can be used as a model for what to do and how people might act in the event of an unpredicted pandemic, and how people were playing out the same behavior during covid.
he said “so they fixed it, right? how did they fix it in the game?” and i told him the truth: they didn’t. they couldn’t control it. they had to reset the servers and roll them back to the time before the ZG encounter.
a CNN article recently referenced another “viral” event in world of warcraft: leeroy jenkins facepulling as a metaphor for the expedited reopening of businesses. what it fails to mention however is how the video ends. everyone who charges in with leeroy dies. he wipes the raid.
it really feels like that meme where it’s like “wow, cool video game reference!” and the point soaring over their head says THE DAMAGE WAS IRREVERSIBLE. THE THREAT SPREAD TOO RAPIDLY AND EVERYONE DIED.
weird reframing of the corrupted blood incident to make it seem, for some reason, like it was all selfish actions that people said was unrealistic because real people would help others. in fact its literally the opposite, it was used as real world data specifically because of the player driven efforts to fix it
The reason this plague in the game was a good model is because we had all walks of life type people reacting in different ways.
Those with healing magic would go into infected areas to see if they could save the infected or at least keep them alive through the disease. Those that couldn’t do that tried to warn players before they entered infected areas. NPC could be infected and have “no symptoms”; they could be asymptomatic carriers and pass it to nearby players.
The best part though was by the time Blizzard had finally come out and said “if you are infected, try to quarantine yourself so you don’t spread it!!” the player base was ALREADY DOING SO. The players had recognized the problem and worked together in myriad ways to fix it.
They also had negative reactions as well, another reason this was such a good example of a real outbreak. They had a couple people report healers or alchemists who were claiming to sell cures/treatments to the disease that ultimately would do nothing. They had a group of players that would hide in the mountains near cities and just pass the disease back and forth between themselves and then raid cities to infect them all over again. They had higher level players start rebelling on the servers. Saying it was an overreaction and if you get it you’ll just die and you can come back and be fine, etc. Since they could get the disease and survive, ie it didn’t do enough damage to them since they were higher level, they felt it unnecessary to care about whether they got it or not. They complained about not getting to play like normal just because this plague could kill lower level players.
ALL of these reactions, good and bad, were real enough to what we assumed a real life epidemic would play out that people started to use it as a model. And now look, we have proof that it was accurate.
However, what we needed to learn from it was primarily that it wasn’t reversible. The bad reactions and lack of care from the few players that weren’t cooperating made it impossible in the end to contain. The only reason it was fixed at all is the game had to reverse time, literally just delete their entire game log a few weeks and time travel weeks into the past to before the plague even began.
Think about that.
The reason no one believed it was a valid model is that it was a video game and thus the consequences weren’t permanent. “No one would act like that in real life.” But look at how we are handling this outbreak. Is it not eerily similar?
And we can’t time travel.

On February 14th 1929, Alexander Fleming introduced his discovery of Penicillin to the world.
Working at St. Mary’s Hospital in London the Scottish bacteriologist found that cultures of Staphylococcus Aureus (a common bacterium found in humans) had been contaminated with a mould and the Staphylococcus growth around the mould had been dissolved. On closer inspection of the mould Fleming identified the mould as penicillium notatum as found on bread.
Fleming introduced his findings of a way to reproduce antibiotic to the world and this discovery has saved countless lives. Antibiotics are natural chemicals released by bacteria and moulds to inhibit growth of other organisms.
Fleming predicted that antibiotics would stop working within 100years. Unfortunately, he was correct. In 2015 the World Health Organisation announced that “Antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest threats to global health, food security, and development today.” The UN General Assembly held an emergency session in September 2016 to discuss the global impact

"I'm so annoyed schools taught us about the mitochondria and not about sewing or how to pay taxes" and similar thoughts might seem totally fine but let's think for two minutes about the implications behind those so common opinions. For reference, because it's relevant, I live in France so all the ressources linked are french, but the general idea behind this post can be applied to different countries and if you know of similar ressources for your own country feel free to share them.
Let's say the government hears you and add this kind of "real life skills" to school program. With the current state of things, two things could happen: teachers who are already teaching different topics will be required to teach those extra classes, without being paid more for all the prep work needed for this. They'll work longer hours for a miserable salary. Or the government will hire people who are not public servants, have no teaching qualifications, and who will be paid minimum wage (or less, as it is possible in France with a status like the service civique). Ultimately, those extra classes will burden an already overwhelmed system, and already overworked teachers.
Let's imagine that none of this is an issue, that somehow our proto fascist government really want to spend more money in education. Well, are we sure we want this very same proto fascist government to be responsible for every aspect of one's education? And do we really want to decrease the amount of hours of philosophy, biology, history,etc classes in profit of a more utilitarian education? In France, the very reason why we have those classes in the first place is because people fought for those topics to be taught and made accessible to everyone, including kids from working class families. That more and more people are demanding that we drop some of those "useless" topics to be taught "real life skills" instead is concerning, and it's no coincidence that this is happening right now...
But at the end of the day, let's say your parents never taught you those things that indeed you need to know, what can you do if school isn't there to teach you? You'll be very happy to learn about the concept of popular or alternative education: education outside of a classroom and governmental institutions, where anyone can be both a teacher and a student.
In France, there's for instance the Mouvement français des Réseaux d'Échanges Réciproques de Savoirs: a network of nonprofit organizations dedicated to this purpose. Through this network, you can basically learn anything: in my local RERS organization, you can currently learn economic theory, how to speak german, how to bake, how to make a quilt, the history of the city we live in.... No matter where you live you'll find similar things going on. If there's no local organization in your own city or town, you can always start your own (and maybe try to contact a national network for support). Looking up your local public library and what kind of stuff they offer is always a good place to start.
As I said before, once we become adults we start being responsible for our own knowledge and our own ignorance. If you're 25 and don't know how to fill out a form or that Egypt is in Africa, it's not simply because of a failure of the education system, but it's because in all those years since you got out of school you've never been bothered to learn. And learning doesn't have to be something you do alone. There are people out there who can help you. And chances are there are probably stuff you know that you could teach other people.
So while learning is not always easy, and it takes efforts, the defeatist "oh well school never taught me so now I don't know" is not gonna get us anywhere. And whatever flavor of leftist you identify as, it's absolutely necessary to have some kind of awareness of what's going on in your community. I think some of you will be surprised to learn how many things are happening rn around you (even with the pandemic).
