Bolaire being absolutely delighted that Misha thinks of theatre as a paradise, letting him have full reign in his Theatre of the Mind. Letting him live and experience whatever play he likes. Showing him plays and beautiful art that has, "long since died to antiquity," persevering and sharing these moments lost to time, works no one else will ever see. Misha embracing Bolaire fondly before departing. Telling Hal how they had the most lovely talk--

Do...do you think Bolaire thought for ages about how he'd set his theatre up for Hal. What kinds of plays and stories he'd want to share. How he would try to make a space that Hal would truly find joy in--one where maybe he could truly accept him. The way Bolaire laments that he couldn't share any of it on his own terms--

can't stop thinking about azune and tyranny's names. i know we can't prove there's allegory in this but i think there might be allegory in this

azune has a name that is from another language, and probably a dying one at that. he has lived away from his culture for so long that he has simply adapted to hearing his name mispronounced. his people are scattered and forgotten, and had probably already been dwindling in the centuries since the last living dragon was seen. navika'an is not widely known. so he simply allows for mispronunciations, and keeps the real way it's said to himself.

the inverse of this is tyranny, who was given a name in the common tongue despite being of na'ahavri. her father has a name of the pit, but he gave his daughters mortal names. their names are still evocative of their demonic origins to someone on aramán, but in a way that's more "accessible." she is the scary exotic pagan monstrosity being converted to the Light, after all. meanwhile, to demons she's an anomaly. it creates a sense of distance between tyranny and her home. she's not quite from aramán not quite from na'ahavri, and feeling torn between the two at every turn. torn between her purpose and her nature.

it's just a really interesting take on language and identity and culture in a fantasy setting.

Damn, the confirmation from Mara that the plan always had been for Thjazi to escape. Mara was meant to be in the Tenebral Reaches and Thjazi was meant to escape, and it was only because she wasn't that Thjazi realised he had to let the execution take place and let himself be killed.

He said, "Not you, anyone but you" when he saw Azune was the Arcane Marshal assigned to scan him, so he realised what position this would put him in. He knew Azune would immediately be arrested if he escaped. But - he only realised he had to actually die when he saw Mara. So there were a few minutes in there - standing on that stage, joking around with his brother over their lunch plans - that he was fully prepared to snap the glyph and put Azune in the noose instead.

So don't worry, Azune! Thjazi didn't let himself be killed just to save you! He was ready for you to die in his place from the moment he realised it was going to be you doing the scan!
