I feel like Sollux here is a really, really good example of why you can’t necessarily judge a fancharacter by their cover. Because he does check off every single point on the Bad Fantroll list, as far as I’m aware! But:
He has a really, really interesting relationship with the plot, and it’s one that’s reliant on him being who he is and that shapes Alternia a little through his existence and characterization.
He’s screaming “chosen one status,” knows he’s going to be a blind pr0phet, hears the voices of the doomed, knows he’s going to die and knows he plays an important role in history. But he’s never once written like “the protagonist” or “the chosen one.” His character has more than “chosen one” brand conflict.
Not everything about him is cool. The heterochromia? He wears dual-colored glasses to match. Fucking nerd. The voices of the doomed? Sometimes they’re less angst material and more like the cat sitting on your keyboard, and you’re like “dude fuck off I’m trying to play Galaga.”
He’s got like, the most angst material out of any beta troll, and I only say “any beta troll” because the other members of the Captor line exist. But!! This isn’t just “feel sorry for me” material, it’s a driving part of who he is and in addition to sometimes moping and (rightfully) feeling sorry for himself, he also very clearly develops around it. The voices, the knowledge of doom, the mental illness and disability, the willingness to die, those aren’t just there when they’re convenient. They’re constant, and he’s a character who has grown up with that “angst material” and whose creator used it to shape him for more than whump.
So yeah I feel like Sollux is actually a GREAT character to look to both as kind of “this is the far-reaching edge of what a troll’s story should look like, don’t cross this line unless you cross it very carefully” (to riff off the “Spiders Georg” idea - he’s not an outlier to be ignored, but he’s a possibility we all need to know isn’t average!), and as “this is how to make an incredibly OP and important character the furthest thing from a Mary Sue.”
