Today I have learned that:

1. Fish can drown if they are in water with a low enough oxygen content

2. There is a huge patch of water in the gulf of mexico that is entirely uninhabitable by fish because it is unoxygenated

So now, for your pleasure, please imagine a mer getting lost and/or tangled up in debris and drifting into such a patch if water, and the panic that would set in when they realize they can't breathe

It probably wouldn't work like that because we don't actually have any systems in place to detect the presence (or absence) of oxygen in our body. The panic response when we can't breathe is for when there is too much co2 in our bodies that we can't get rid of out.

So realistically the mer wouldn't notice that they got into unoxygenated water. They would just get very tired, fall unconscious and slowly die in their sleep unless rescued

Oh no don't apologize! That's also really good! Imagine some human on a boat seeing an unconscious mer in such a patch of water and dragging them on board--either to rescue or kidnap them. Or a mer who's getting sluggish from no oxygen and is unable to resist as a human or someone else grabs them!
