I was at DragonCon one year when Avery Brooks was on a panel, and a Black dude stood up and talked about how the year DS9 came on, he became the sole custodial guardian of his small son, and he was *terrified* and felt helpless, because he hadn’t really had a father himself, and he didn’t really know any Black fathers he particularly wanted to emulate, and no Black single fathers at all.  He talked about how every week he’d put his kid to bed and sit down and watch Deep Space Nine, and think to himself, “Okay, this, I want us to be this kind of father and son,” and how, silly as it might sound, the idea that Ben could be there for Jake, all the time, successfully, and earn his admiration and trust, was the only source he really had of inspiration, the only voice that was telling him he could handle this job. 

I swear to fuck there was a whole auditorium of people in tears by the time he was done, including both him and Brooks.  It was one of the most beautiful moments I ever saw about the sometimes bloodless-sounding term “representation,” and about fandom in general, and I will never forget it.

Today I saw someone on threads who said they’re “a best selling author with years of marketing experience” offering marketing advice.

Friends. This person has one book out. It has been release for two weeks and is already free, which is why it’s number one in an obscure category on Amazon. It has “award winning” on the cover but we don’t know which award it was. Could have been a cookery class when she was six—but I digress.

And this persons marketing advice? Spend big on PR firms and ARCS. She sent out 2000 advance copies and 100 special edition book boxes, and hired seven companies to promote her book. SEVEN. That’s not marketing advice. That’s privilege and an over inflated ego.

I’ve seen other patreons around that purport to offer writing advice but most of the updates are links to free resources or tumblr posts. So you’re getting zero value for your dollars.

Anyway my point is, be careful who you’re listening to and who you’re giving money to. I know it’s tempting to sign up to that marketing course or that writing advice patreon, but check the credentials of the person running it.

I know I just reblogged this but I think the really important takeaway here is that this techbro is not genuinely asking “how can we improve fanfiction?” What he’s asking is “how can we tap into this massive market?”

I keep thinking about how many of these chat bots are free—for now. And of course they are! It’s a classic marketing technique when you’re trying to get your foot in the door with a novel product: let folks use it, let them get used to it, then start charging for it. You don’t have to look any further than streaming to see a very recent example of how this happens.

And it’s going to happen with AI.

There’s nothing these assholes love more than making money off of other people’s hard work. But you can’t legally charge for fanfic! So how do you get around that? You charge for a chat bot (which you trained on other people’s fanfic). You can’t charge for the content, but you can charge for the thing that produces the content.

AI is theft, and there are a whooooole lot of people gleefully looking to make a buck off of our hard work.

Don’t use AI, don’t feed AI your favorite fic writers’ and artists’ work, don’t read AI fic, don’t engage with it. And if you do, well, I can’t force you to give a shit about other people, but AI is a paywall being built, brick by brick, between you and the things you love. Stop slathering on the mortar.

I’ve seen research that suggests the majority men only bother to try to please or satisfy female partners if they see them as a long term or potential long term partner. Meanwhile women are expected to always put others needs first before their own under all circumstances, including sexual. This is why most hook-ups end in a man having an orgasm but very rarely with a woman having an orgasm. Hook-ups are tilted in men’s favor for men’s gratification with nothing in return for women which is why I have a hard time understanding how they’re supposedly ‘empowering’ for women.

It seems to me women have more to lose under hook-up culture. Faux ‘sexual liberation’ has given men greater access to women’s bodies and sexualities while doing very little if anything at all in return for women. Until we change the script on heterosexual sex, until we change men’s entitled attitudes towards sex and women conceptualizing themselves as vessels for male pleasure and use, I’m going to count hook-up culture as more of an L for women than a gain.

If you really do want casual sex, I think it’s best to seek out someone you know and trust to actually care about your pleasure and gratification, not to mention safety, rather than a random drunk fuckboy.
