That is only because the singer or subject of the song only gives you their point of view. If you look at it from the son's point of view, he grows to learn That his father will not make time for him. So he does not make time for his father and he breaks the cycle. One of the reasons the son gives for not talking with their father is because the kids have the flu. The subjects son is carving out time from their new job to spend time taking care of their children. He didn't end up just like his father. Instead, he became a better father figure to His children and gave his father the same energy his father gave him.
