i've been trying to articulate why i'm fixated on this for a bit and never feel like i've quite put it into words so bear with me but. in these later books rick as the hand of god reaching into the story to interfere based on what he's interested in or bored of writing, or what won't take a lot of effort to write, or what he thinks will sell, has become so palpable (inmyopinionetc). which is utterly fascinating to me in books whose text is about the greek gods reaching into the lives of the protagonists and making them bend to their whims. the characters are all just a child's hamsters getting put in the microwave, in-universe but also as players in a story, and more and more it feels like the same thing

the way this is framed isn't really all that serious but percy's line of thought being "if no one here will love me then maybe I'll have to make them fear me instead" is honestly very sad (obviously a survival tactic and not a genuine desire to be cold and intimidating). it's very comparable to his early beginnings at camp half blood in tlt where he got exposed as a son of poseidon + slated to lead the quest and was immediately ostracized by the entire camp as a result. in fact there's even this line in tlt that's not quite the same but probably stems from the same part of percy that hates being an outsider more than anything else
