Second to the previous anon, you have a great blog!! Very informative and it’s both interesting and heart warming to see your journey - further inspiring me to push for med school after my Chem undergrad!! Any good book recommendations about medicine/being a doctor? Quite enjoying ‘The Appointment’ by Dr Graham Easton so far! :) 💚
AHH thank you so much! Good luck for going for med school!
I really like books by Atul Gawande - he’s very reflective and talks about issues and his journeys in medicine. He’s American but a lot is still relatable to here. ‘Being Mortal’ is particularly good.
Henry Marsh is a British neurosurgeon who’s written two great books, ‘Do no Harm’ is AMAZING.
I also recently read ‘the prison doctor’ by Amanda Brown, a doctor who works in a prison (duh). That was really good.
I’m sure you’ve heard of ‘this is going to hurt’ by Adam Kay, but yeh that’s a good, more humorous read on life as a junior doctor. ‘Your life in my hands’ by Rachel Clarke is another really good book about being a junior doctor, but more focused on the political issues we’ve been through as well recently.
OH and I recently also read ‘unnatural causes’ Richard Shephard - definitely not the average life of a doctor (he’s a world-leading forensic pathologist) but it was SUPER interesting!
Oh and if you want to cry your eyes out there’s ‘when breath becomes air’ by Paul Kalanithi.

THE MEANING BEHIND DAY6′S “SHOOT ME” MV
remember the tagline for this album is: “VICIOUS WORDS HURT LIKE A BULLET”, and the meaning for this phrase is pretty self explanatory
italics: scene description | bold: scene interpretation
prior to this scene, the lady and guy were both engaged in a heated conversation. then the lady used her hand as a gun and fired at the guy, as seen by the bullet holes on his shirt, implying that things started to go downhill and the words used were pretty nasty, and the guy felt hurt by them like as if he got shot by a bullet.
while this whole ordeal was going on, there were people at the back looking on, and they then started to join the lady as they too pointed guns and fired at the guy. here, the lady is also seemingly smirking in triumph as if she just won this whole battle now that she has people “backing” her up. whenever someone starts saying mean things to another, you will find that other people will also join in and start hating on the person without even knowing the whole story, hence causing more hurt to the victim.
fast forward, it seems like the guy has had enough as he also held up a gun and aimed it at the culprits, who looked really taken aback by his action. they thought he will also be firing bullets back at them.
but surprise surprise, what the guy shot was a splash of colours. if you didn’t notice, the colour of the beginning of the mv were in slightly muted colours, everything looked darkish. but after the guy’s shot, the scene brighten up a lot and you could see the colours present visibly. this suggests that instead of using vicious words like the lady, the guy chose to instead use “colourful” (positive) words. just because someone was mean/has been mean to you, doesn’t mean that you have to retaliate back with vicious words, otherwise it will be a never ending cycle of hate. choose to be kind with your words. hate will only bring negativity to one’s life, whereas kindness brings a positive light to life.
towards the end, you can see the remorse on the lady’s face upon seeing the guy’s tearful face. in the beginning, you can see the malice in her eyes clearly as she was set on hurting the guy. the others seemed to be checking their bodies for any signs of bullet holes, and didn’t find any. this goes to show that once those vicious words leave your mouth, there is no way you can take them back and undo the damage and hurt you have inflicted on the other party.
moral of the mv? be careful with your words. words are the most powerful weapon, and can hurt like a bullet. words have a lasting effect on people, and will affect their emotions. the words you choose to use can either inflict hurt, or spread love. choose wisely. be kind, always.
thanks for coming to my ted talk and remember to support day6 by purchasing their album and watching the mv!!!

We’re all just suicidal kids telling other suicidal kids that suicide isn’t the answer
We’re not lying though
Before, I get sad for those temporary people that came and went.
But now, I get sad because it's my turn to leave them.
10 pieces of advice to give yourself at the age of 20
At the age of 11, you learned that perfection does not always mean a flat tummy and a thigh gap. Go on and eat that second piece of cookie that you crave so much.
At the age of 12, you learned that just because you call her “mom” and him as “dad,” it doesn’t mean they inherently know how to be that. Also, suicide poison is not the cure for everything, it’s not a cure at all.
At the age of 13, you learned the difference between giving up and taking a rest. You might have given it your all but not make it. Remember to disregard everything that comes after but.
At the age of 14, you learned that standing up for everyone else does not mean that all of them will stand up for you when you need someone. Not one of them would be the first one to defend you, that spot is reserved for your name.
At the age of 15, you learned that people rarely mean what they say even if as a writer, you deem each and every word important. Learn to know the voices that speak sincerity and the voices that are just trying to get into your pants.
At the age of 16, you learned that letting go of people that only brings toxicity in your life is never a crime. Thinking about your own peace of mind does not make you selfish. Neither does placing yourself above that last number on your priority list.
At the age of 17, you learned that giving yourself to everyone willing could only lead to one thing: your own’s deterioration. Dear, you are more precious than someone who can’t even look into your eyes in the morning.
At the age of 18, you learned that loving and accepting yourself are two different things. Placing yourself in situations you are well aware of your self distraction is never loving yourself.
At the age of 19, you learned that lovers are not the only ones that can break your heart. People stay and go for a reason. Remember to treasure the rightful ones that life allowed to stay.
You’re 20 now and life has never been what you expected and planned it to be and that’s possibly the greatest thing that can happen into your life. You’re a writer but life writes with you, know when to let it leave significant marks and know when your own pen should be the one doing so.
