gonna go watch obsession in theaters. very excited to have meta thoughts after experiencing it on the big screen. for now i just wanna say that bear killing his cat through the negligence of his poor choices (re: leaving opioids lying around) is a BRILLIANT metaphor and piece of foreshadowing for like. literally Everything that's going to happen in his relationship with nikki.

Not only that, but in screenwriting there is a well known trope called "save the cat," wherein within the first act, you have your protagonist save a cat in order to establish their character and get the audience to like them (this can be any heroic or kind act on the characters part — though sometimes they literally save a cat).

One of the first things this film does is have Bear kill his cat.

Just saw the interview where Curry Barker explained that it's totally possible to get a normal wish from the One Wish Willow, and I love the way they did that so much. The reason Obsession happened isn't because it's trying to twist Bear's desires into something evil. It's not even because he phrased his want wrong. Obsession happened because Bear got his hands on a magic item that could do anything in existence, and chose to force someone to fall in love with him, which is an inherently evil thing to do.
