That would be Firered Leafgreen IPS! FRLG.IPS is a rom hack and ARG for Firered and Leafgreen. It adds: A new rock by the water! It is Kanto again, just like you remember it. You are going to play Kanto again. See, look!
To get into some very light spoilers on what the fresh hell it actually is:
FRLG.IPS adds an alternate route to the game which you are guided through via a 2000s style website made by a girl named Abby, who documented the steps to finding.... Something, in FRLG. Abby is a "water type gym leader" on her web ring and was posting about the Pokemon happenings around the time of her blog (2004) before... Strange things started to happen.
At the same time, in the game itself, carrying out the extremely specific instructions Abby gives you causes you to begin a very strange alternate route to the "game". It involves sequence breaks, many unsettling moments, and a meta story which takes inspiration (and pays homage to) classic Pokemon urban legends, glitches, and creepypastas.
There's more I could say, both in the vein of things I like AND things I'm not a huge fan of about the hack, but overall, I really love it. It was kind of tailor made for me because i truly grew up on Pokemon creepypastas and glitches, and if you were anything like me, and were as into the creepy side of Pokemon as I was, you would LOVE this!
There also are, for the first time ever, starting to be uploads of it on Youtube too, if you can't play the rom yourself! (Though I WOULD recommend playing it yourself, because the experience of combing through the website and figuring out the puzzles on your own is just so thrilling.)
Anyway, that's what the hell is happening here! And whatever you do Just do not read the cynical opinions of dipshits on youtube and twitter. Like, never do that for any reason, but particularly not for this game. Okay? 🖤 Okay
