its not that fiction doesnt have its place, its important and healthy to exercise the imagination, but non-fiction can do so much to boost and supplement that. if not for yourself, for your art or for the people you're around

These things are principally the job of the child’s parent or guardian, but in some cases directing the child to that caregiver is difficult or impossible (parent refuses/confuses the child, parent is absent, child’s questions are specific and relevant to a situation their parent was not present for, etc.) so I think all adults should be prepared to have these conversations with kids.

It's actually a really difficult part of being an abuse survivor, and it makes recognising and escaping abusive situations extremely difficult.

Trauma Bonding is not when you and your friend bond over similar trauma experiences. That can be cathartic, but Trauma Bonding is actually this awful other thing.

My experience with Trauma Bonding is feeling like the relationship that I had with my abuser was one of the most important things to me. No matter how badly I was hurt, how obviously I was taken advantage of, how much I knew what I was experiencing was not socially acceptable, how many secrets I had to keep. I rationalised all of it. It wasn't abuse in my head, it was a dozen other things with different "explanations".

It's actually very hard to admit to yourself that you're a "victim", and especially one of those. Compound this by the fear of how people will treat you if they find out, and fear of violent reprisal against your abuser... But it happened to You so it wasn't that bad, right?

It's very difficult to accept, leave, and especially difficult to report.

Like. I understand how you might come to a wrong conclusion if you tried to guess what these terms meant from first principles alone. I do. I get it. I too was once a precocious child who encountered a lot of new words in print and couldn’t be assed to look up what they meant before I started using them.

But even though it’s understandable how I ended up there, it was still bad and embarrassing that I – for example – once incorrectly believed that the word “fetish” was a rough-synonym for “hobby” and proudly admitted to some wild-ass things before anyone corrected me… And I sure as fuck didn’t double down after I learned the actual definition. Your ignorance isn’t your fault, but your willful ignorance in the face of education is.

At the end of the day, “But that’s not what I meant” isn’t actually an excuse for misusing a well-defined term! If you don’t mean to imply that you are abusing your friend into becoming emotionally reliant on you, or gearing up to violently assault someone for the perceived crime of being homosexual, then don’t say that you’re “trauma bonding” or experiencing “gay panic”! It genuinely is that simple! And if you didn’t know before, now you do!
