The inner and outer asteroid belts are separated by the “frost line”, beyond which water in the solid state tends to form a substantial fraction of an asteroid’s mass. Inside the frost line, the temperature is too high for surface ice to survive without sublimating into space.

There is a third class of asteroids, known as the Trojan Asteroids, which share Jupiter’s orbit, either leading or trailing Jupiter by 60 degrees. These small worlds are theorized to have survived relatively untouched since the formation of the Solar System. The Lucy space probe is now en route to explore both Trojan clusters.
