I've recently had white women in professional contexts tell me that they were quote "hurt" and "gutted" by what amounted to very minor professional faux pas on my part. I remember reading a white woman academic's essay on Jane Eyre that began with recounting her emotional upset upon having Jane Eyre "taken away from her" by postcolonial / anti-racist scholarship. white women's emotions do have currency in personal and professional spaces in selective contexts, i.e. when wielded against people of colour 🤷🏽‍♀️

TMRAs are always gesturing towards the women who are supposedly saying that trans men aren't oppressed, and then you look at what's actually being said and it's all, "people broadly treat trans men pretty terribly, which is awful. but it doesn't happen because they're men, it happens because they're trans." and this is seen as an unacceptable insult to manhood, for which these women must be hunted down and crushed.

the thing about media literacy is that understanding why the author chose to specify that the curtains are blue is the same skill set as understanding that the way the author characterizes all black characters as angry or all chinese characters as meek and silent is racist. it is the same skill set as being able to identify when a news source is biased or when someone is feeding you propaganda. the ability to ask "why did this person choose to present this premise in this specific way?" is a critical skill in a world full of misinformation. why are the curtains blue? maybe it's a characterization detail. maybe it's extraneous worldbuilding. why is this character written as being right all the time? maybe you're intended to disagree with them. maybe it doesn't matter. maybe you should still ask why.

I hate to do this but I have no choice. My entire paycheck is already gone due to two large delinquent payments we had to pay. I have another payment that is getting me called daily. We need help to make ends meet the next 2 weeks. Further still, the IRS is about to take $1200 from me. I'm drowning while working non-stop. The crazy shit Animorphs does with perspective is just insane. Rereading Animorphs has redeemed novels as an art form in my eyes. There's so much here.

Every quirk in the premise of the story is just some absolutely bonkers shift in perspective. The rotating narration. The thought-speak. When they morph they're basically a system with the animal they're morphed into. There's one where the narrator gets possessed by an alien parasite and the entire second half of the book is just a conversation between him and the parasite as he experiences the parasite's death. Like. That's literally the coolest thing I've ever read. These books fuck hard.

The dark themes aren't like some act 3 bullshit either. These characters perceptibly have like PTSD by the end of the first book and every time we shift to their narration they're detailing a half-dozen new traumas they've never told us about before. The idea that they could ever have a normal life is waved in our face in mocking tones exclusively. There's a callback like every 5-10 pages at least and all of it is just solemn acknowledgements of the horrors.

These are extremely rich emotional themes.
