I was six when this happened. Apartheid in South Africa ended in 1994, when I was 14. I’m not even 40 yet.  This is WELL within Millenial lifetimes. Does it feel like forever ago because of the speed of technology? yes. Was it forever ago. Hell, no.

This was the year Chernobyl happened. That was far more recent than we like to think, too.

1986 was the year Challenger happened.

It was the year Studio Ghibli got their first film out.

Americanized movie timestamps, this was the year Top Gun came out. Tom Cruise is still acting. This was the year Star Trek: The One With The Whales came out. We’re still quoting it.

This shit is a lot more recent than it feels.

Addendum: If perchance you do scrape up the money to do something (say buy a computer or phone because you absolutely need the damn thing for work), you get shamed for doing so. “Why did you buy that expensive phone if you are poor?” I spent 20 dollars on it …. “What about that nice computer you got there?” I bought it six years ago, refurbished for about $250. “How about that big ole television you got there?” etc, etc, etc. No matter how poor you are, so many people think you should have less if you are “actually” poor.

Honestly, Rick Rolling is the best practical joke ever. Like, there’s nothing offensive or mean  spirited about it. It’s just like “Oops you thought there would be something else here but it’s ‘Never Gonna Give You Up’.” which isn’t even a bad song. It’s fairly enjoyable to listen to. There’s no jumpscares, no screaming, no ill will. Just Rick Astley telling you he’s never going to give you up. I think that’s great. “You fell into my trap!
