I remember a while ago here in UK there were stroke-identifying adverts. Their catchphrase was FAST:

F- Face: is their face fallen on one side?

A- Arms: can they raise both their arms up and hold them there?

S- Speech: is their speech slurred? Can they speak a full sentence?

T- Time: if all the signs show a stroke, call 999.

We managed to save my nana with this information when she had her first stroke.

I dont have much of a following but also of note are Transient Ischemic Attacks, or TIAs. These are basically miniature strokes, where you have the symptoms of a stroke but they clear up within 24 hours. These are often followed by a full stroke (15% of the time according to the AHA). If you or someone you know, has stroke like symptoms but they clear up, don’t let them shrug it off! They can have a full stroke!

F - Facial droop (show teeth or smile) | Normal response: both sides of face move equally well / Abnormal response: one side of face does not move as well as other

A - Arm drift (ask patient to close eyes and hold both arms out with palms up) | Normal response: Both arms move the same or neither arm moves (retest if the latter to ensure patient did understand directions) / Abnormal response: One arm does not move or one arm drifts down compared with the other side

S - Speech (ask the patient to say “The sky is blue in Cincinnati”) | normal response: Patient uses correct words with no slurring / abnormal response: patient slurs words, uses inappropriate (incorrect) words, or is unable to speak

T - Time, call emergency services and be prepared to do CPR
