One Wisconsin City Beat Back a Data Center. Now Residents Are Helping Others Do the Same.

When a secretive $1.6 billion data center proposal landed in Menomonie with almost no warning, residents had weeks to fight back. They won —

Residents had serious concerns about the project. While companies often win major tax breaks by promising jobs and economic stimulation, data centers bring few permanent jobs and can drain municipal water resources, drive up electric bills, rob cities of tax revenues, and cause damaging noise, light, and air pollution. Already, Wisconsin residents have seen some of these impacts at data center sites in Port Washington and Beaver Dam. Residents in Port Washington have complained about the disruption caused by around-the-clock construction at the new data center. Families near the construction in Beaver Dam have reported that their wells have run dry.

Although the Menomonie City Council voted to annex and rezone the land for the data center in early September [2025], pressure from local campaigners was so great that Mayor Randy Knaack announced at a Sept. 22 city council meeting that he had notified Balloonist that the city would not be moving forward with a development agreement. More good news came in January when the Menomonie City Council voted unanimously to place additional regulations on data center projects.

This comes after the city experienced major push back from a proposed data center last year.

This new ordinance will reclassify data centers and other similar large businesses. Menomonie mayor Randy Knaack says it will allow the city to institute strict guidelines. He says it puts the city on an even playing field with big businesses. “The new zoning will have some perspective on certain issues. It might be water use, it could be height of the building, noise, electricity usage. Those kinds of parameters with the new zoning. So, the city of Menomonie will actually have a better opportunity to bargain, or make things better if things move forward,” said Knaack.

i'm making myself wait a year before committing to a #stance about academia but i would like to invite you if you are in academia or if you are reading academic literature to ask yourself whose voices are missing from what you're reading. and in particular, who actually "survives" the system and makes it to publication etc. one thing i was thinking about from the first day i set foot on campus is that my friends, who are brilliant but more disabled than me, would not be able to get a phd solely on the basis of physical inaccessibility--they would not be able to get to campus. but those people have insights that are glaringly absent from the knowledge that is produced within the academic system. in a similar vein, i've come across a lot of scholarship by israeli academics in the field of classics, but none from palestinian academics--and of course this is a microcosm of the larger issue in which scholarship from the global south often never enters the conversation in the imperial core. (obviously other people have talked about these things far more eloquently--you can check out the bds page on the academic boycott of israeli universities for some more context re: palestine.) there is a lot of value in the scholarship that has made it to me but the bigger question i'm always asking is what perspectives are we missing and where can i find it. because we are missing so much.

Go to the inaugurations of littlely known artists’ exhibitions.

We are always begging for people to attend, there actually is the “hack” to invite your whole family but tell them to pretend they don’t know you. People with money are more willing to buy your work if they think many people likes it, so your mere presence eating our cheese and canapes will be a great helps. Please bring whoever you want too.

one time a pal of my pals was having a tough time selling their work in an art exhibit and called us up on the last day, ‘us’ being about 8 students who were Very hungry and also bored. We put on the nicest/artsiest clothes we had available (one dude had a legit fancy suit and put on some shades which were Bright Pink he looked like a movie star I swear) and rolled up to the show in pairs, separately. Fine Art Pal has some nice paintings! but nobody is really paying attention to them, so after getting some fancy cheese cubes in a manner that did not betray that we were actually a ravenous pack of starving students we casually wander around the show and then, fairly individually, drift to a stop by their work. Some of us even walked away, then came back a bit later ‘captivated’ by the art (it was actually really nice but recall we were all poor as shit and this was a help hustle). Our group’s interest naturally caught other folks, and eventually there was a small clump of about 15 people musing over this art, and within ten minutes the biggest piece had been snatched up by a shrewd investor. by the end of the exhibit every single piece was sold. It helped pay off the artist’s student debt and on that success they got into another exhibit! They’ve been doing well ever since.

So yes, please attend new artist shows, you get free cheese, get to look at nice art, and you can really help out people who deserve more attention.
