One thing that really upsets me about the way that people are (very understandably) wanting to turn back on the PWHL Detroit team is that Michigan has ZERO D1 women’s hockey teams. University of Michigan, for example, just has a club team that has to raise funds to even use the rink. For one of the top producing states of women’s hockey players in America, it is really embarrassing that we have no D1 teams.

I worry if there isn’t strong support for this new PWHL team that people will point to that as a rationale to continue to push female players out of state and not invest in women’s hockey.

I've been pondering this all over the last day or so, and my thoughts are: I think the loudness of upset online is, however valid or no, also a very loud minority. This is not a value judgment, just a thought. Read the phrasing on the draft signing posts; the teams are a business, and certain players are picked out of a desire by the management to drum up success, not cultivate good vibes online. People really loved hating the Frost the last couple of years; even if they transfer those feelings onto Detroit, well, even the Frost had good sales, won the Walter Cup twice, &c. (And all things are fleeting, including all players' careers, frankly.) I think the winds are changing in a good way for womens' sports, and so I think that means PWHL Detroit will probably be fine in the long run, unto schools like UMich getting more serious about proper womens' teams.
