Field notes from the time I scouted a decommissioned nuclear power plant...

This is the control room, and if you look closely, you'll see a dark stripe in the carpet running the perimeter of the room. This was referred to as the "velvet rope," and absolutely NO ONE was allowed to cross it without authorization. It was under constant observation from an adjacent office, and I was told that if someone did set foot inside without permission, things got VERY serious VERY quickly.

This is one of the computer stations, and to me, it's such a gorgeous encapsulation of its period of technology, the sort of aesthetic that shows like Lost will bend over backwards to recreate.

As I was scouting, I noticed the day calendar had last been torn off about when the plant closed for good...

Then we went into the nuclear reactor, and the whole damn thing was just so spooky.

Looking back, I think it came from an overwhelming feeling of utter insignificance in the face of the sheer power this colossus was designed to produce.

The scale was just so out of proportion to every day reality, the sort of place where a weight of "46000 LBS" is just casually noted on the side of a part.

Peering into where the core would've been, all I could think is that I'd never want the job where you have to climb down that ladder on the left while this thing was in operation.

something that i find interesting about independent animation nowadays is that if you don't have studio/streamer backing, you have to release your work yourself on the internet, but you have to do it for free on the internet because virtually nobody is going to be willing to accept a paywall just for one original show, so what you have to do in order to make any money off of it is make all of your money from merchandising, but then this means that you show must be merchandisable and have very toyetic character designs that translate easily to plushies and whatnot, but then you also need to cater your show to people who are disproportionately inclined to buy merchandise like that in the first place so that your sales can be enough to sustain you, which means that even if you want to communicate complex or difficult ideas in your work, your independent animation project must attract (at least on a first impression) and retain viewers who are both very consumerist and very capable of rabid passion, which unfortunately has a single-circle shaped venn diagram with a lot of the most toxic fandom tendencies known to man, and this explains a lot of things about independent animation and its fandoms nowadays I think

I love indie animation and indie games and buying art at fairs but I am always painfully aware of how the kind of art people get to make and the art I get to see is so constrained by the economic system they're made in. I love what Glitch is doing but they subsist on toy sales and that's always going to factor into what and how they make their animations.

There is stuff out there that is not rooted in a business model, but by its nature there's going to be a lot less of it. Also, because it isn't engineered to be maximally appealing, fewer people are going to like it! But that doesn't mean it isn't worthwhile. Here's a few animations I found that I'd like more people to see:

3D Mainichi Modern: made in 3D Windows Movie Maker, a 30 year old animation program! I love seeing people stretch an old tool.

Anna-Logue: A series of cute shorts about people in a video game.

matt + megs: An animation duo who make some of the most charming little shorts I've ever seen. There's so much heart in this animation and they have such a small audience.

Twins in Paradise: kind of bleak! Be warned.

Sleepy Tom: Pixel art animation! I'm real excited for Andy Land's upcoming game, Endacopia.

Some of these people can probably make a living on their work and some of them definitely can't, but make it anyway because they love it. It's worth making an effort to seek out the stuff that isn't financially viable—the things that are made of love. Let them know you appreciate what they do.

So a creche in ecology is a group of animals that take care of their offspring as a group. Grouping together like this can help with protection against predators, finding food, enduring the weather, and gives the parents time to "rest", as sometimes the parents will alternate who's being the primary watchers while others get to hunt by themselves for a bit, like a baby animal daycare.

But ye lions do this once cubs each a certain age. A decent amount of birds do it (for example: flamingos and a lot of penguin, duck, and goose species). Gharials (a type of South Asian crocodilian) form creches with hundreds of babies from multiple nests (they lay under 100 eggs each and sometimes as few as 20). Feral hogs tend to form groups of mothers and young like this, and I saw 3 sows and like 15+ tiny babies the other day and they were so cute

Rattlesnakes will creche!! In some species mature adult females will hang out together (they're friends!) in shared dens and even birth their clutches together. Then one will babysit while the others go get food. Adult females have been seeing caring for their young like shooing young back into the den when a predator approaches.
