Okay I watched Search for the Leviathan. From the offset I already had it down in my head; ‘Okay. This is the Cthulhu side to SFAWTDE’s King in Yellow. They’re following a set of specific coordinates to a deep ocean, they’re going to find R’lyeh down there.’ And then the video’s climax came. And at the bottom of the ocean; Wifies found a lost island city. And then he sees something and collapses almost exactly like d3rlord3. It’s got to be connected.

And also I noticed the fact that nobody else acknowledged Hummer and I noticed his lack of death message but I never noticed until it was pointed out that he’s never shown arriving, and that he has not hitbox. I do think he’s the Leviathan; in a sense. My personal headcanon was that when the entities jumped from 2 to 3 that was Hummer placing and recalling the tropical fish to spike Wifies’ belief and drag him deeper into the idea of the Leviathan. But I do also agree that the Leviathan is him.

Okay a day later and I want to come back and consolidate some of my thoughts on the Lovecraft stuff.

The King in Yellow was written by Robert W. Chambers for the anthology of the same name for his own personal stuff. The Yellow Sign, Carcosa, all that good juicy SFAWTDE stuff came from that original text. It’s been a while since I saw SFAWTDE and DAWTDE but from what I remember, there was no mention of the name Hastur, so really, just original non-connected universe text.

However! The main thing that seemed to popularise The King in Yellow’s connections to Hastur was the role-playing game, Call of Cthulhu. This seems to be what really got the idea going of The King in Yellow being one of Hastur’s avatars. And Call of Cthulhu would get a metric shit ton of supplements across its existence but one of the most popular is the Malleus Monstrorum. The 2006 version of which, spoke in detail about several Avatars, including the King in Yellow as one of Hastur’s, but also, the Father-Of-All-Sharks as one of Cthulhu’s Avatars.

I know it’s stupid but sometimes I feel genuinely ill about the fact that ZT2 Paranoia was never finished. They were going to have a Cerberus, and European Wyvern, and Mothman. Look at this.
