Wind, by Karin Hosono
Most non-Minnesotans have no idea what this means, but to put it plainly: we're raised with not just the expectation but essentially -programming- to assist others who get stuck during the winter. We'll help people we'd otherwise punch on sight if they're stuck in the snow and ice, for zero reward.
This is the level of rage we're at with ICE. I'm not joking to say it's almost physically painful to not help someone stuck like that, and it's worth it because the people stuck are ICE.
The only way we have to express how mad we are above this is channeling the First Minnesota all over again.
The Scandinavians who settled in Minnesota brought with them their Norse understanding of the laws of hospitality: you do not fuck around with winter, that if someone needs help in the winter, you help them as long as they don't actively try to hurt you or your neighbors. Food, shelter, labour, whatever, if you can help in winter, you do.
ICE has violated the "actively try to hurt you or your neighbors" bit of the laws of hospitality, and thus the hospitality has been revoked. They are free to feel winter's wrath against those who would bring harm to the community.
I like to think that Lady Skaði would be proud of her distant children.

but here's the thing
Happy 21st of September!
pacific rim fucks severely for a lot of reasons but my favorite is that it opens with "the lizard aliens are unionizing so we built robots running on the power of love to fight them you got all that right" and before you have time to really process that concept bam gunshot body on the floor and the movie goes "now consider the vast power of grief in this setup" it never really stops considering
It also has a scene where the robot uses a boat as a baseball bat. That also fucks tremendously.
the accent really makes this
The Godmother
@gjdraws
can we talk about how this is the best scene in the entire movie. the score. the boat. gipsy’s foghorn motif and the up angle we see her at as she makes her way to otachi. the way raleigh and mako let the boat drop and readjust their grip on it. the way they use it like a BAT. the determination and coordination between them. the way they absolutely rock otachi’s shit. the way otachi uses its tail to grab and throw it away. there was no need for this scene to be so fucking cool AND YET!!!!! I love this movie I love guillermo del toro everythjng is beautiful bless my wonderful life

Not like that film was a one-off either.
I would like to add The Birdcage (1996) to this list of drag queen movies (mind you, it's based on a French stage play from 1973).
Which starred Nathan Lane as a drag queen just two years after he had voice Pumba in "The Lion King":
And we ESPECIALLY need to remember Victor Victoria from 1982 (during the REAGAN administration) which is SET IN THE 1930S and stars everyone's favorite curtain-sewing nanny as a struggling soprano who decides to pretend to be a boy doing drag (DOUBLE THE DRAG FOR YOUR MONEY). I mean look at this photo:
Count Victor Grazinski isn't putting up with your transphobia (or you being a dick to Robert Preston).
Unfortunately, the representation of drag and female impersonation (as it was often called pre-Stonewall) is scant in mainstream American cinema due to the Hayes Code. There are definitely more, but these are biggest, "family-friendly" names I can think who have starred in major motion pictures as drag performers.
can I add another?
Some Like It Hot (1959), it got in trouble with censors and still went ahead, but it featured a lot of Gender and a character getting really into this whole “being a girl for real” thing, as well as the implication of a a gay engagement being on the table
but like? It has Marilyn Monroe in it and banger music and it’s a classic! I only know from my mother bringing it up and also a tiny bit of exposure to russian tv channels, but I think it was also popular in the Soviet Union? So she’d seen it as a child and loved it so much she watched it with me when I was also just a child.
(not to mention big traditions of children’s theatre with drag performance)
In the new stage musical version of Some Like it Hot they have one of the musicians discovering they're trans in a pretty nice subplot that expands on the original movie from a 2020s perspective. Was a neat show. :)
Is the musical online anywhere?
I probably can't afford to go see it but I wanna see it <3
for the non-Americans who are very confused right now:
Everyone hates The Chiefs this year because it's quarterback Patrick Mahomes is low-key MAGA and the orange pestilence is in attendance in the game. And the racist ass "chop" their fans do. and that Traves Kelce said it would be "an honor" to host the orange pestilence at the game.
and now they're fucking losing and Taylor is going to DUMP him and join Kendrick in writing an absolutely devastating breakup anthem.
and Kendrick Lamar just called Drake a pedophile at the fucking superbowl
the eagles also refused to visit the white house last time they won the superbowl in 2018. when asked how he felt about trump coming to this game, eagles qb jalen hurts said "he's welcome to do whatever he wants." philly fucking hates trump and they are kicking kc's entire ass right now.
The pestilence vs the REAL ORANGE PRESIDENT OF THE USA.
