Man eating rice, China, 1901-1904
this is an extremely important picture
Ive never seen someone from 1904 having fun omg
He has a nice face
No but the history behind this picture is really interesting
The reason that everyone always looked miserable in old photos wasn’t that they took too long to take. Once photography became widespread it took only seconds to take a picture.
It was because getting your photo taken was treated the same as getting your portrait painted. A very serious occasion meant so thst your descendants would know that ypu existed and what you looked like.
But one time some British dudes went to china to go on an anthropological expedition, and they met some rural Chinese farmers and decided to take their pictures. Now, these people weren’t exposed to the weird culture of the time around getting your photo taken, so this guy just flashed a big grin during the photo because he was told to strike a pose and that’s the pose he wanted to strike.
I think painted portraits and old photos give us the idea that in general people were just really unhappy because those are the visuals we have. This is so refreshing.
Hey, look; “Man Laughing Alone With Rice” is back on my dash.

Magnets: I want to commit diamagnetic
how did I never once think to use tape fuck
one time as a kid I forcefully shoved two magnets together, and these were the strong magnets my dad used in his shop to pick-up missing little metal bits, and I held them really tightly in the palm of my hand, went up to this one kid who legit said things like “I think black cats are bad, they should be drowned” and drew crosses on the notebooks of kids if she found out they didn’t go to church, I told her “Hey. I’m a witch. If you don’t stop trying to hurt animals and picking on kids, I’ll use my magic to throw you into the sky”, and when she dared to doubt my powers I told her that I had two “rocks” in my hand that I could send across the playground, then I opened my hand the the magnets shot off in two different directions (we were over in a spot that was empty, so no other kids were around, nobody got hurt), one of them stuck to a drainpipe and the other stuck to a fence. This kid SCREAMED, and ran to the office, and I guess had her mom pick her up from school, and then she wasn’t there for a couple of days, finally her mom called my house and claimed I had “traumatized her daughter by performing a terrifying magic trick”, and when my parents asked what I did I just said “I showed her a magnet and she flipped out. She’s not gonna be happy when she finds out about gravity, either”. eventually this kid came back to school and always made a point to come up to me and say “Hey, my mom told me not to talk to you!”, and would just be like “Good job, you already screwed that up”

Why do parents always assume their kid is lazy when they get bad grades? Like maybe help your kids by talking to them, not punishing them. This is how I failed math and didn’t even know I had number dyslexia for years.
When my sister was in high school she struggled a LOT with math. Like I know a lot of people find it really difficult (myself included), but I mean she was really really bad at it. She has always been a very smart, creative and sensitive person, but math made no sense to her, to the point where passing seemed impossible.
I will always remember that twice a week, around the kitchen table, my sister would sit down with my dad for hours, and they would try to work out her math homework. I should mention that my dad is an artist, and art teacher. Truth be told I think he struggled with math just as much if not more then she did. But twice a week you could hear them downstairs, going back and forth, trying to figure it out together. Some nights would be smooth and easy, some nights I could hear them arguing from one floor up about factors or equations, not in anger but in mutual frustration.
I remember the day that she passed. My sister couldn’t wait until my dad’s school day ended, so she called him at work. She gleefully announced to him “I got a D-!”. We could hear him through the phone as he exclaimed “She got a D!” excitedly to his class. Still through the phone we heard his students clapping, laughing and whooping in congratulations. Seldom has a grade in our household been so celebrated.
Just thought a shitty picture like this should be accompanied by a story about a person’s parents who actually gave a shit about helping their kid instead of mocking and punishing them.
Read the story
Most of the time, it’s not today’s technology or laziness that’s making children fail, sometimes it’s just too hard or it wasn’t explained properly
In my family, any passing grade is cause for celebration. All of us have had trouble in school (including both of my parents) and we recognize how hard it is to keep up good grades
By the time kids get to high school, they’ve already figured out which subjects they’re good at and which they aren’t. Railing at them for not being good at every single subject is not going to magically make them good at that subject. There is no such thing as a well-rounded student, it’s a myth. No one is good at everything. Even the valedictorian is still going to have at least one subject that was a bit harder for them than all the other subjects. We put so much stock in being good at math/science/whatever class your parents fixate on, and not enough in students skills or in the effort they put in. Some kids can ace math without doing half the homework. Some can’t ace it with tutors and constant hard work. I was the latter. My ass got a d- in one high school math class, almost got one again as an undergraduate years later, despite three tutoring sessions a week and constant work, practice, office hours attendance. Was it embarrassing? Yes. Did I cry about how stupid I was all the time? Yes. Was I stupid? No, math is just not something I’m good at. Did it ruin my life? No, I got my masters from one of the top super shiny over-ivy universities in the world, and they didn’t give a single shit about my math grades because hey, i didn’t do my masters in math, shockingly enough.
Support your kids when they struggle and let them know it isn’t the end of the world if they aren’t fantastic at every single subject. Be a dang parent.

cool so you can hide ads for knowing too much now
hey!
hey!
probably don’t do this!
when you tell facebook an ad “knows too much” you’re essentially confirming that their advertisement algorithm is working, it’s just making people uncomfortable because it’s working too well
it’s still positive feedback on them trying to either flood people with advertisements or socially engineer you into buying things by tracking frankly enormous amounts of data on your location, the other websites and apps you use, your conversations recorded through your phone, everything
instead? just mark all ads as "repetitive” or “irrelevant”- something that doesn’t give them information on how well the ad catered to your tastes.
don’t give huge creepy corporations valuable information on your ad tastes. they will use it against you in any way they can.
