“I won’t say I told you so…”
“… Because that’s not strong enough.”
The camper van shook violently as Billy Maximoff launched from beside the cupboard at his twin, armed with a suddenly lethal looking spanner and some motor piece that nobody could name. Tommy smirked and moved swiftly aside, not even remotely worried about the severely pissed off look in his brother’s eye. Billy never has been and never will be an unnecessarily violent person. The only person he ever actually injured properly was Tommy himself and that was when they were 13 and he popped Tommy’s rib in a hug when he got out of juvie for the first time. If that doesn’t sum him up in a sentence, nothing will.
“C’mon, , it’s pretty late in the day, if we don’t get Wanda back on the road, I’ll be forced to eat Teddy for sustenance,” Kate drawled, eyes closed beneath her purple-tinted sunglasses as she tried desperately to block out her figurative sons’ annoying bitching. They had been travelling for over 9 hours, and Kate’s tolerance of the man-stink and bickering had been grated down to the bare minimum. In truth, she was a little relieved that they had broken down in the middle of nowhere, as it gave her a chance to stretch her legs as well as very few witnesses to the murders she was slowly being pushed to commit.
“Kate’s right. We’ve got to get to a motel by nightfall, and Wanda’s not getting any better with you guys sitting around,” Teddy said, a joking tone as he gestured with greasy hands to the rest of them, sweat dripping from his blonde bangs, Billy unable to tear his eyes away from his wonderfully stunning boyfriend.
“God, you’re hot,” he mumbled under his breath.
“HOT DAMN,” Tommy suddenly exclaimed, climbing out of Wanda in a highly exaggerated gesture and stretching.
“Ahh… That “emerging from the womb” feeling…” he said with a content smile on his face, walking round to the front of the van with Teddy, looking pretty damn relaxed, almost as relaxed as Cassie Lang who had dozed off under the car in the shade, hidden from the scalding rays of afternoon sun. This was one of the hottest days of the trip, thus everyone was feeling the strain of living with each other in such a confined space for what was now 3 months. When they had arranged the year-long trip, way back in their teens, they had never dreamed of the reality it might become. But now, years later, the 21-23 year olds were finally out of the nest, flying far and wide. Broken wings were just a setback.
“I’m still not happy about naming the van after our mother…” Billy commented, crossing his arms over his endearingly aesthetic-y galaxy print t-shirt which was currently made far less aesthetically pleasing by the sweat patches under his arms. Tommy scoffed, patting the bold red and white camper van on the bumper.
“I think it’s inventive and beautiful. Now she’s here every step of the way with us!” he sang mockingly a hand on his heart while the other wiped a fake tear from his eye.
“Wanda did give us the van, and for free. I think it’s sweet!” Teddy agreed, screwing about with the insides of Wanda (in a non-sexy way) as he attempted to fix up their van. He frowned and dropped the spanner on the dusty ground.
“Nah, I’m done. I have no idea about how to fix a van. If only Nate was still here, he was supposed to be our mechanic…” Teddy grumbled, leaning against the van and once again wiping the dirt and grease from his hands onto the towel once used by Nate Richards to fix up his mechanics.
There was an agitated scoff from underneath the van.
“Don’t remind me. That asshat.”
Kate pushed her glassed onto her head and jumped out of the van to join the rest of them who were basking in the sunlight.
“Let’s not talk about Nate. That asshole doesn’t deserve a place in our conversations. Cheaters don’t belong,” she spat as she held out a hand for Cassie to get up after she finished wriggling out into the sunlight.
“Seriously? Not one of you knows how to fix a car?” The blonde looked around the group as they shrugged non-committedly. She sighed and rolled her eyes, shifting her black denim shorts and rolling up the sleeves of her blood red plaid patterned shirt which was tucked in messily as she got down to business.
“What’s the point of having you all around if you can’t fix the damn van?” Cassie mumbled, her rotten mood only increasing when she was faced with the blaring sun fogging her mind.
“Sober driver,” said Teddy.
“Chef and food scavenger,” Billy chimed.
“Money management,” said Kate.
“And me. And me’s all you need.”
Billy looked over at his twin with a smirk he couldn’t hide.
“Really, though, what is the point in you?”
Tommy chuckled and slapped his brother on the shoulder.
“I find the local bitchin’ parties man. Where would your recreational activities be without me?”
“Well they wouldn’t result in a blinding hangover, that’s for sure…” muttered Kate, who had managed to hoist herself onto the roof and was now sitting on top of the blanket she had lined the roof with to stop herself burning her butt. She lay out, once again relaxed, knowing that her chances for moments like this were rare. She surveyed her peasants curiously, observing like the queen bee that she was.
There was Cassie, the youngest of the lot, the barely-legal-to-drink 21 year old fresh out of college who was working furiously on the van, strands of her ponytail falling in her eyes and catching the sunlight so the rays bounced back, making Kate wince. Billy was now sat on the floor, dirtying his rusty red chinos that cannot possibly be comfortable in this heat, and he lay back against Teddy’s bear shins, playing with the string of his boyfriends board shorts. Teddy himself, clad in a camo green muscle tee and brown tinted sunglasses, loose rainbow flip-flops on his feet, was now pulling out his phone and taking pictures of the group, being sure to log their adventures. He wasn’t the only one. Kate herself was a YouTuber, vlogging her adventures daily (or wherever she had wifi) to share with the world and her steadily increasing number of subscribers. Tommy had stripped now, just wearing his green and white board shorts, showing off his muscular and scarred torso, wounds from the incidents he doesn’t talk about now fully exposed. Nobody questioned it. Not like he would tell them his little secrets anyway. And finally there was Kate herself. Her loose and floaty sleeveless lilac dress kept the breeze on her body, no sweaty underarms for her, and she lay barefoot on the roof, uncaring. This was the life. She prayed a little that they would stay here for just a moment longer, but as usual her wishes were discarded by fate as the van shuddered agitatedly and sprung to life, making the all too familiar purring that had become a loving comfort to her over the past months.
“That’s how its done, guys. Cassie wins.” Without a mic, she had no choice other than to slam the spanner onto the dusty road, a grin on her face as the others whooped and cheered. Kate slid off the roof and casually swung herself back inside, bagging her seat at the back as fast as possible, forcing Cassie and Tommy to practically lie on each other. She stretched out her legs. Yeah, she liked Nate being gone more than was okay.
“Next stop, MOTEL CALIFORNIA!”
And with that, they drove into the sunset, not a care in the world. Of course, that had to change…
