undescribed ballinae species

this spider measures 3mm and was found in the mount coke state forest, south africa. not much else is known about the species and it remains undescribed since these photos were taken in 2014.

we have an exciting update on this adorable species!! as of the 31st of december 2020, this spider now has a scientific name of its own after 7 years of being unnamed.

Also, despite owning her for two and a half years, this is the first time I have ever handled Petunia. She is a Chilean rose hair (Grammostola rosea) and her venom is not dangerous to humans... but I’ve seen the shocking length and sharpness of her fangs, and the speed with which she springs upon her prey, and I’ve always quietly decided that she’s best left alone. I was pleasantly surprised by her docility, though I don’t think I’ll make handling her a habit since I know it can stress them out.

Actually... this video is the first time I’ve held an adult tarantula since I was a toddler.

My sister actually had vampire who keeps going back to medical schools over and over and over again. Every time he completes it he adds a ‘Dr.’ to his title. Right now he’s ‘Dr. Dr. Dr. Dr. Dr. Dr. Dr. Dr. Dr. Dr. Vampire’.

I get so tired of having to remind people this, but Draculas are OBLIGATE CARNIVORES and cannot be kept on vegan diets. Coconut juice is a fine supplement but it CANNOT be a whole meal replacement, Draculas who only get coconut juice lose their shiny coat and it’s bad for their fangs. That much sugar can also give them diarrhea which is DEADLY to an animal like a Dracula as they can dehydrate easily! Always feed a species appropriate diet.

this post is specifically about Dracula husbandry. different strains require different diets, habitats, safety precautions, etc. Using bloodline specific language allows enthusiasts to avoid making generalizations about the entire genus.

plus as the first species to achieve domestication, Draculas are by far the best known among hobbyists. unless you’re a breeder or zookeeper, if you’re looking for practical tips on vampire upkeep, chances are it’s for a member of a Dracula subspecies
