OP hugs to u and really appreciate u continuing to voice ur correct takes. i am also POC/east asian and have been so infuriated by ignorant racist takes on hudson’s situation by white ppl especially but even some other (non-asian) POC, so its seriously refreshing to have ur good, thoughtful pov in the convo. 😭🙏
i agree w ur perspective that u have laid out so eloquently so far, and i also wanna add another thing that i think is a clear indicator of why POCs saw that photo and immediately clocked what the dynamics/situations were (white ppl drawing hate symbol on the only POC/asian person), while white ppl failed to do so.
Its bc us POC can tell it was not an accident the swastika was drawn high up on the forehead.
we know instinctually the intention of the white person drawing that on a non-white person. put it somewhere impossible for the person to see on themselves, but impossible for someone looking at that person to miss. snap the photo before that person figures out whats going on. quick lets pose, nobody tell him guys! haha what a funny prank. look we even have a pretend hitler at the party! (that other white kid with the hitler stache drawn on him.)
its so enraging that these white folk have such entrenched racism, and specifically anti-asian racism, which is the most acceptable and unpunished form of racism in western society, that they leapt thru so many hoops to land on a farfetched conclusion of: hudson drew a swastika on himself? at a graffiti party where the whole point is to draw NOT on yourself? When the ONLY person branded w that hate symbol is the ONLY POC at that party???
we know kamloops is basically (forgive the american-centric comparison) MAGA country in canada. we know that all this hate and smear campaign is sourced from a racist, white supremacist stan group that literally wishes death on hudson. the fact that anyone is even entertaining a smidgen of validity in wanting hudson to “take responsibility” is really just, at their core, an anti-asian racist.
ultimately, they want hudson to apologize for something a white person did, which relieves the burden from white ppl to self-examine their racism. another case of white ppl pretending to take a moral high ground in order to scapegoat the POC. us model minorities are always picking up the slack.
i am so mad not just on behalf of hudson, but on asian ppl who put up w this bullshit from ignorant racists every day. we have a lot of practice in keeping our heads high and staying excellent in spite of the racists, but man is it tiring.
anyways, just wanted to send some support and love to u in solidarity 🥺🙏 sorry this got so long and venty, but thank u again and wishing u well 🩵
Finally another East Asian!!! And your opinion is correct!!! Thank you for your contribution!!!
You are so so so right. It feels, sometimes, like I’m screaming into the void every time I talk about this. We truly are the people it’s acceptable to hurt, and it’s never fun to remember that.
If I, in my small liberal city, have experienced this kind of shit I shudder to think about what else Hudson went through in MAGAland. There is so much unknown about that photo, but what I do know is that that was not the first time. That was not strike one. I wonder how many other instances of racism could be turned against him if they were known. How many white people would get away with it because they were hitting an acceptable target.
Just like you said, we are used to this. These people are not pioneering new types of hate. But that doesn’t mean we don’t get tired. So tired of constantly being the victim, of people ignoring our pain and making it about their white feelings.
Do they get tired? Do they feel special? Is that what they want?
Well, I hope attempting to ruin the life of a victim who was a little too brown for them is getting them their fix.
Obviously, not all white people are to blame. But I wonder, on what is truly the White Website, how many of those here are truly blameless?
It is a bone-deep fear in the heart of every person of color that getting any sort of recognition will be their own undoing. I’m truly sorry to Hudson Williams that his is trying to be realized. But, of course, it’s all his fault. You can’t blame a white person when he’s right there, can you? After all, he’s just so brown. It’s an instinct. They can’t help it :(. He’s got bad vibes. They always suspected him, and finally, an opportunity to match that totally-not-racist-suspicion with a story that fits well bringing has fallen right into their laps. How can they possibly resist?
It’s so hard to unpack your biases, and the rush you get from a fresh enemy is right in front of you. How many people genuinely choose to step back and do the work? Evidently nobody here, but I mean in general.
It’s a new day. A white person hits the post button. And a new 7th grader is being told by their teacher that they shouldn’t talk about the Japanese internment camps because they’re “a real bummer” and they wouldn’t want to upset the white classmates. One of those classmates hits the post button.
