Happy Moon Landing Day! ❤️👩🚀🌛
January 27, 2015
My Fair Lady is still one of my favorite musicals, and all of Eliza Doolittle’s outfits are unparalleled. I was obsessed with the horse race scene.
“People should pass a test before being allowed to have kids.” “Isn’t it scary how white people have this inborn capacity for evil?” “I’ll never pass because males and females have different skull shapes.” “Autistic people have a stronger sense of justice than anyone else.” “I don’t want AMABs in my space because they’re dangerous.” “You shouldn’t have access to hormones if you dress like THAT.” “Anyone who does something that awful isn’t human.” “Some people really shouldn’t be allowed to vote.”
This is eugenics. This is phrenology. THIS IS NAZI SHIT, YOU ARE A LEFTIST BUYING INTO NAZI SHIT. YOU ARE NOT IMMUNE TO NAZI SHIT.
love all the people in the notes of that post like 'yessss I love the Odyssey and the Iliad. the Aeneid can go die in a hole.'
i do get it up to a point bcos yes Aeneas, as a character, is The Worst. however: in some respects the Aeneid is, to me, the 'chewiest' of the three and the one I always had the best time studying. i think it's really neat that bcos we know exactly who wrote it (Virgil) and why (to hype up Augustus) you can just kinda critique it like you would any modern novel.
which is why it's particularly odd that someone apparently thought it was the hardest to understand!! in some respects its like the training wheels poem. to me.
yeah! i think maybe because it CAN be analysed in a firmly defined historical and literary context it also DEMANDS analysing in a way -- there's this sense that you're missing something huge if you don't, so casual, surface-level reads are going to just get aeneas's bad vibes and not a sense of why they're like that? and maybe people feel like that kind of analytical reading is more demanding. but i love a historical and literary context. and i also feel that's what basically all school english classes were teaching us to do, on a lot of levels, so it was a natural progression from things we were already doing. as you say, it was the same kind of skillset as modern novels, just a less familiar context to get to grips with
but maybe that kind of analytical reading is not taught at school level to some and so does feel like a much bigger challenge and harder thing to tackle. it might explain the state of my activity page
HM yeah i think how you were taught it might make a big difference here - we did it in high school as part of a comparative unit with the Odyssey and in that context its unsurprising that a lot of people are like 'ugh this guy sucks'.
at university we talked about it much more in the context of Roman history (which we all had a grounding in bcos obviously the rise of the Roman Empire is on the first year ancient history course) which is I think where it perhaps more naturally belongs.
yeah. we did it as part of like. exploring cultural ideas of heroism and how societies talk about themselves, so we did it in conjunction with excerpts from the iliad and looking at different ideas of heroic behaviour (furor vs pietas and stuff like that) and how these reflected the literary and cultural contexts of their composition, and the political aims and contexts of the aeneid. so i think that also provides quite a lot of context to Why Aeneas Is Like That. and having done roman satire the previous year, we'd dealt with some pretty unlikeable attitudes already lmao our expectations were low after juvenal
i mean did we like aeneas? no. but the text as a whole grew on us i think. it definitely grew on me. on a purely stylistic/literary level it's got some really good moments
it might be a harder one to read completely unguided with no contextual knowledge or interpretative notes/help, i.e. picking it up as a casual reader with no explanatory notes, outside of an educational context, maybe??? but i have so far Not made it through the odyssey in that context bc i just get distracted lol, so it depends on your interests i guess. and i definitely don't think it needs like graduate-level study to be appreciated cos, again, i read it as a 17-year-old taking class civ as an a-level having not done it as a gcse and with no knowledge of latin, it's not that dense
i mean did we like aeneas? no. but the text as a whole grew on us i think. it definitely grew on me. on a purely stylistic/literary level it's got some really good moments
ah yeah see on a personal level i think part of the reason i have more affection for it than some other people might be that I've read some of it in Latin (not a lot of it. they absolutely don't teach whole epic poems in high school latin) with a lot of attention to the language and poetry. i remember it being an enormously satisfying thing to study and yeah on a stylistic level it DOES fuck.
Here it is folks:
My definitive ranking of my least favorite bodies of water! These are ranked from least to most scary (1/10 is okay, 10/10 gives me nightmares). I’m sorry this post is long, I have a lot of thoughts and feelings about this.
The Great Blue Hole, Belize
I’ve been here! I have snorkeled over this thing! It is terrifying! The water around the hole is so shallow you can’t even swim over the coral without bumping it, and then there’s a little slope down, and then it just fucking drops off into the abyss! When you’re over the hole the water temperature drops like 10 degrees and it’s midnight blue even when you’re right by the surface. Anyway. The Great Blue Hole is a massive underwater cave, and its roughly 410 feet deep. Overall, it’s a relatively safe area to swim. It’s a popular tourist attraction and recreational divers can even go down and explore some of the caves. People do die at the Blue Hole, but it is generally from a lack of diving experience rather than anything sinister going on down in the depths. My rating for this one is 1/10 because I’ve been here and although it’s kinda freaky it’s really not that bad.
Lake Baikal, Russia
When I want to give myself a scare I look at the depth diagram of this lake. It’s so deep because it’s not a regular lake, it’s a Rift Valley, A massive crack in the earth’s crust where the continental plates are pulling apart. It’s over 5,000 feet deep and contains one-fifth of all freshwater on Earth. Luckily, its not any more deadly than a normal lake. It just happens to be very, very, freakishly deep. My rating for this lake is a 2/10 because I really hate looking at the depth charts but just looking at the lake itself isn’t that scary.
Jacob’s Well, Texas
This “well” is actually the opening to an underwater cave system. It’s roughly 120 feet deep, surrounded by very shallow water. This area is safe to swim in, but diving into the well can be deadly. The cave system below has false exits and narrow passages, resulting in multiple divers getting trapped and dying. My rating is a 3/10, because although I hate seeing that drop into the abyss it’s a pretty safe place to swim as long as you don’t go down into the cave (which I sure as shit won’t).
The Devil’s Kettle, Minnesota
This is an area in the Brule River where half the river just disappears. It literally falls into a hole and is never seen again. Scientists have dropped in dye, ping pong balls, and other things to try and figure out where it goes, and the things they drop in never resurface. Rating is 4/10 because Sometimes I worry I’m going to fall into it.
Flathead Lake, Montana
Everyone has probably seen this picture accompanied by a description about how this lake is actually hundreds of feet deep but just looks shallow because the water is so clear. If that were the case, this would definitely rank higher, but that claim is mostly bull. Look at the shadow of the raft. If it were hundreds of feet deep, the shadow would look like a tiny speck. Flathead lake does get very deep, but the spot the picture was taken in is fairly shallow. You can’t see the bottom in the deep parts. However, having freakishly clear water means you can see exactly where the sandy bottom drops off into blackness, so this still ranks a 5/10.
The Lower Congo River, multiple countries
Most of the Congo is a pretty normal, if large, River. In the lower section of it, however, lurks a disturbing surprise: massive underwater canyons that plunge down to 720 feet. The fish that live down there resemble cave fish, having no color, no eyes, and special sensory organs to find their way in the dark. These canyons are so sheer that they create massive rapids, wild currents and vortexes that can very easily kill you if you fall in. A solid 6/10, would not go there.
Little Crater Lake, Oregon
On first glance this lake doesn’t look too scary. It ranks this high because I really don’t like the sheer drop off and how clear it is (because it shows you exactly how deep it goes). This lake is about 100 feet across and 45 feet deep, and I strongly feel that this is too deep for such a small lake. Also, the water is freezing, and if you fall into the lake your muscles will seize up and you’ll sink and drown. I don’t like that either. 7/10.
Grand Turk 7,000 ft drop off
No. 8/10. I hate it.
Gulf of Corryvreckan, Scotland
Due to a quirk in the sea floor, there is a permanent whirlpool here. This isn’t one of those things that looks scary but actually won’t hurt you, either. It absolutely will suck you down if you get too close. Scientists threw a mannequin with a depth gauge into it and when it was recovered the gauge showed it went down to over 600 feet. If you fall into this whirlpool you will die. 9/10 because this seems like something that should only be in movies.
The Bolton Strid, England
This looks like an adorable little creek in the English countryside but it’s not. Its really not. Statistically speaking, this is the most deadly body of water in the world. It has a 100% mortality rate. There is no recorded case of anyone falling into this river and coming out alive. This is because, a little ways upstream, this isn’t a cute little creek. It’s the River Wharfe, a river approximately 30 feet wide. This river is forced through a tiny crack in the earth, essentially turning it on its side. Now, instead of being 30 feet wide and 6 feet deep, it’s 6 feet wide and 30 feet deep (estimated, because no one actually knows how deep the Strid is). The currents are deadly fast. The banks are extremely undercut and the river has created caves, tunnels and holes for things (like bodies) to get trapped in. The innocent appearance of the Strid makes this place a death trap, because people assume it’s only knee-deep and step in to never be seen again. I hate this river. I have nightmares about it. I will never go to England just because I don’t want to be in the same country as this people-swallowing stream. 10/10, I live in constant fear of this place.
Honorable mention: The Quarry, Pennsylvania
I don’t know if that’s it’s actual name. This lake gets an honorable mention not because it’s particularly deep or dangerous, but it’s where I almost drowned during a scuba diving accident.
Edit: I’ve looked up the name of the quarry, it’s called Crusty’s Quarry and is privately owned and only used for training purposes, not recreational diving.
The Gulf of Corryvreckan is indeed in a movie. It’s in I Know Where I’m Going! from the genius partnership of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger.
Also, yes, the Strid is possessed by devils.
guys. Guys please you're allowed to say big boy words. please we cannot keep just rolling with the sanitization of every space on the internet ok. you're allowed to say suicide. you're allowed to say porn. they're not bad words, they're just words.

I'm stealing this. Thanks.
"are you gonna take those pills the rest of your life?" you mean my molecules? why surely you wouldn't deprive me of my molecules. they are shaped exactly just so, you see. my molecules
do you know how hard someone had to work to make my molecules into their molecule shapes??
they invented a new shape of molecule just for me and you want me to what, not absorb it???
reblog to remind somebody about their molecules
people who shape molecules at their jobs found this post and they're in the notes being happy to be appreciated. go take your fucking molecules
Hey. Why isn’t the moon landing a national holiday in the US. Isn’t that fucked up? Does anyone else think that’s absurd?
It was a huge milestone of scientific and technological advancement. (Plus, at the time, politically significant). Humanity went to space! We set foot on a celestial body that was not earth for the first time in human history! That’s a big deal! I’ve never thought about it before but now that I have, it’s ridiculous to me that that’s not part of our everyday lives and the public consciousness anymore. Why don’t we have a public holiday and a family barbecue about it. Why have I never seen the original broadcast of the moon landing? It should be all over the news every year!
It’s July 20th. That’s the day of the moon landing. Next year is going to be the 54th anniversary. I’m ordering astronaut shaped cookie cutters on Etsy and I’m going to have a goddamn potluck. You’re all invited.
Hey. Hey. Tumblr. Ides of March ppl. We can do this
Hell yeah moon holiday
Ooh coming up we should celebrate
PITCH: We call it Moon Day, and then every 7 years when it falls on a Monday, that's an even BIGGER deal and we call that Moon Day Monday and go absolutely apeshit about it (the next Moon Day Monday is in 2026 so we have a couple trial runs first)
MOON DAY MOON DAY MOON DAY
moon day is 20th July!!!
Scheduling this a day earlier to remind you all and myself about the Moon Day tomorow!
Happy moon day to all who celebrate
This is your reminder to prep for Moon Day on July 20th.
MOON DAY MONDAY THIS MONTH NOT A DRILL!!!!!
Y'all for real please do these. Even if you're certain your posture doesn't suck. One day you will wake up with impinged shoulder pain like I did and let me tell you it fucking HURTS. Do these exercises even just once a week and it will make such a difference. Especially my fellow creatives out there, stop shrimping over your work and go do these right now. RIGHT NOW.
Also, if you’re even a little concerned about getting a hump or having trouble standing fully upright in your old age, this is how you prevent that. If you want to be up and about when you’re old you have to start when you’re younger. And keep in mind there is no bad time to start and it’s never too late. Starting today is way better than never starting at all.
Well hot damn if it wasn't enough for this loser to throw a public tantrum now he's going out of his way to follow predestrogen on other platforms and start harassing her there!!! You can't hide these Matt I got the screenshots lol!!!!!!
HE'S BLATANTLY LYING OUT OF HIS ASS!! SPREAD IT AROUND!! And also since she seems to be from Ireland even though I don't even know shit about eu laws from what little I do know this is a big violation of GDPR and should be reported as such!! https://commission.europa.eu/law/law-topic/data-protection/reform/rights-citizens/redress/what-should-i-do-if-i-think-my-personal-data-protection-rights-havent-been-respected_en
@photomatt should kill himself.
I genuinely hope this circulates forever.
Headcanon that because Data doesn't need to eat he really only uses the replicator in his quarters for spot's food so whenever someone replicates something she thinks it's for her. Geordi gets a cup of coffee in the morning and spot hears the replicator sound and just immediately runs up to him meowing
It's so important to me that spot is an absolute menace and also Data's special little baby. She wants a snack so bad. She demands it
i got these knockoff boots online and instead of the brand name on the tag they have the name of an apparently nonexistent martin scorsese movie??? what the fuck
THE ORIGINAL? ON MY DASH
this post led to a series of events that had martin scorsese himself reacting to his alleged movie goncharov and it has less than 400k notes almost 3 years later?
this is wrong
Yeah, she could’ve done this in her standard Sailor Moon form. Super form is overkill, really.
Sailor Moon is stronger than Goku. I don’t make the rules. Fight me about it.
What!? 👀
I’m on a still active forum, with a solid vs debate scene. Sailor Moon vs. the God-Emperor of Mankind from 40k is one of the most treasured threads there, as Sailor Moon trashed the guy.
19 pages straight of debate over Sailor Moon vs. God-Emperor of Mankind, in which every time a 40k fan desperately brings up a new point, it immediately gets negated by another one of Sailor Moon’s powers
This is a nice sign to look at. 10/10 for composition.
he looks so confident
don’t give me ideas
some design concepts
minor arcana concepts
Yes, the aces are zeros. Deal with it.
I'm nearly done with the first draft-- I just have to figure out what the face cards should be for the swords
I think I should write a guidebook to go along with it.
I know nothing about tarot, so it'll just be giving the names of the symbols, giving explanations of what the symbols literally mean, and giving examples of symbolism-rich objects/substances they could apply to
YOU CAN NOW PURCHASE THE PRINTABLE PDF ON ITCH.IO!
WARNING! These cards are dangerously cool!
No guidebook yet, but hopefully I'll get around to it.
Please make me aware of any errors you encounter while printing so that I can fix them!
