hey, dont cry modern doctor who fans, 159 classic who episodes, 517 books, 1952 audio stories, 1267 comics ok?
*sigh* fine, fine, i'll be the new doctor who showrunner. bring me two twinks, britain's tallest woman, and 1000 pounds worth of alumininamian foil
now we have to have a tv movie where doctor billie piper is gunned down and promptly killed by the american healthcare system, only for her to regenerate into slutty paul mcgann again.
apparently the correct response to oh no doctor who is over isn't "woagh i can't wait for the tv twovie 😍"
dr who book fans when the show is cancelled and there are thousands of tv-only fans to recommend their weird niche and often terrible books to
inspired by this post by @the-macra:
the thing is. i loved ncuti gatwa, first of all. he was fantastic and i loved him as the doctor and i count myself very very lucky to have seen him live in theatre. i will never stop mourning fifteen and the way he was cut down too early and all the potential he never got to reach. how ncuti said he'd be so upset if he never got to face a dalek on-screen, and then he never did.
and there's material from the recent seasons that i like, too! there are episodes i love, there are concepts i'm happy to build into my personal headcanon sandbox. i'm a huge enjoyer of doctor who as a universe that can bridge the gap between scifi and fantasy. i liked the ending of season 1, when everything was all still up in the air, and it was still possible that the unanswered questions might /get/ answered.
but now we're at the end of it, somehow, out of nowhere, and god there's just. so much that i'm glad to see fail. and i hope the bbc learn from this, though i don't know how much faith i have in that. it's a massive relief to see that door closed when behind it there's horrific racism in how the characters get treated, and box-ticking diversity that wants praise for trans or disability representation without giving those characters anything meaningful to do, and tone-deaf pink-washing that paints genocide survivors as monsters. not to mention the snake-eating-its-own-tail nostalgia-baiting, and writing for short-form content online rather than anything more substantial.
i don't know. none of us know what the future of this show holds right now. i truly can't figure out how i feel about all this. but i think what we can say is that the behind-the-scenes of this era must have been so much messier than we thought, and it must have reached a point where it was no longer tenable. and i think i can be forgiven for feeling a sort of satisfaction to see it come to this, when the flaws of these seasons did so much to drive me away from a show i love
welp. there's never been a better time to get into the EDAs i guess.
the young and despondent nuwho fan who believes that dr who only exists when its currently airing on tv vs the wise classic who fan who knows that doctor who exists all the time, constantly, and you'll never be free of it just because the bbc pull the plug vs the enlightened eu fan who knows that doctor who actually manages to somehow exist More when the bbc take it off television
here we goooooo
Pulling out my copy of Doctor in Distress right now.
anyway is this a good time to pitch a season of doctor who that's a straight up adaptation of the eda scarlet empress
