other details regarding the group and this case: lapsus$ aren't anti-capitalist hackers. they hold information for ransom--e.g., profit.

lapsus$ hacked brazilian ministry of health and deleted covid-19 vaccination data. they then held that data for ransom. charming.

arion was deemed unfit to stand trial, and so a jury was asked to determine if he did the crimes. they also weren't to determine his guilt. basically they were asked if he did these things, not if he did so with criminal intent. (something about this doesn't sit right with me, because if he's unfit to stand trial then surely asking him if he would hack again would be unjustly self-incriminating?).

kurtaj is a repeat offender of high profile hacks, and was already out on bail when he hacked rockstar. said hack of rockstar was done with a threat to the staff that he would release the source code:

Kurtaj leaked 90 videos of GTA VI gameplay footage last September while out on bail for hacking Nvidia and British telecom provider BT / EE. Although he stayed at a hotel under police protection during this time, Kurtaj still managed to carry out an attack on Rockstar Games by using the room’s included Amazon Fire Stick and a “newly purchased smart phone, keyboard and mouse,” according to a separate BBC report. Kurtaj was arrested for the final time following the incident.

i cannot find any information about whether arion, who again is deemed "unfit" to stand trial, should also be considered "fit" to understand the severity of his actions. i have only been able to find reports that he said he would continue doing these hacks, as well as having previously pleaded guilty to a few prior charges.

He has been charged with 12 offences, including three counts of blackmail, two counts of fraud and six charges under the Computer Misuse Act. [...] He has previously pleaded guilty to two offences under the Computer Misuse Act and one count of fraud.

rockstar had to spend $5 million "recovering" from the attack. i cannot find any information as to what said "recovery" entails.

lapsus$'s actions have made governments rethink their own cybersecurity standards.

some small bit of good came out of this, especially if anti-cyberware methods are going to be improved. i don't think he should be indefinitely hospitalized at all, but let's not pretend that he is some brave anti-capitalist going against corpos with pure intent. he stole private information of customers and was part of a group that held vaccine information during a time of a global pandemic for ransom. again, he and the rest of the group sought personal profit from what they did. honestly if he didn't do the same to rockstar about gta6's source code, i wouldn't think he did a damn thing wrong in that particular instance.

anyway don't buy rockstar games. that $5 million "recovery" is barely a fleck of piss on a urinal for them.

another thing i tend to think about with this. i also just think in chapter 5 there's a theme of care and dependency. the flowers have extreme guilt over being taken care of by asgore. flowery conceptualizes himself as weak and useless. in the dark world, his fantasy, he tries to return the care given to him to asgore to "make up for" asgore taking care of him when he should've died decades ago. it's an extreme example, but i also resonate with his feeling.

when your body or mind puts you in a situation where your reliance on other people becomes really explicit, you're trained by the world to see that as shameful or to see yourself as deficient. your efforts to ignore your needs just to avoid "being a burden," will leave you worse off. you punish yourself because of deeply internalized ableism.

regardless, even by virtue of being a living thing on this planet, you are already designed to need others. you have to listen to your body's needs even against a society that teaches you you shouldn't. you have to be okay with the fact that you have needs. sometimes your needs are different or are greater than the person next to you, and all you can do is listen to your body and turn to others when you need them. you're still a person when you need people.

She is, to me, a love letter to Deltarune's development process as a whole and how it has shaped Toby, and a reflection of the kinds of thoughts Toby has shared with us about developing Deltarune alongside pain. I also think it's a beautiful follow-up to Gerson's themes of storytelling and authorship (letting go of "perfection" + accepting the contributions of others = both about rescinding control and embracing perseverance). Pink is also so much more than this, but I've been thinking about this a lot.

The crowd roared in confused enthusiasm as Tenna gave a gracious flurry of low-FPS bows, pausing only for the occasional stink-nose at his audience plants who weren’t throwing enough 3D roses.

Eventually, the room fell silent. It was Senshi’s turn to speak.

He puffed out his chest, took a long, sweeping look over the audience… and shook his head.

“I can see not all of you are eating properly.”

The crowd murmured with embarrassment.

“I don’t know who needs to hear this, but it’s time to take the turkey out of your icebox. I have seen the ingenious technology with which your people store food... and I have also seen the waste which results from such convenience.

“The food you take had a life. Beasts grew fat on the grass of the field, plants grew from the sun’s rays, and mushrooms grew from minerals in the cracks of caves. And yet, it sits in your iceboxes, collecting moisture until it perishes.

what is it with able bodied people saying “get well soon” after you say that you’re chronically ill?? like? i am not gonna? and i once literally responded with “i’m not gonna, it’s chronic, as in permanent.” and they went like “oh well, hope you get better!” like bro 💀

Speaking for me personally (and also as someone who has their own chronic health issues), most of it is, as someone mentioned in the replies, script failure. Humans have a lot of scripts and shorthands for social interactions, and the most common one for finding out someone is ill or injured is to wish them a swift recovery. There isn't really a script for how to respond when someone won't recover tho, and so many people end up falling back on the script they do know even if it's not really applicable.

In my own personal experience, when I end up saying - or feeling the impulse to say - 'get well soon' to someone with a chronic condition, what I'm really trying to convey is something more along the lines of 'I hope your good days outnumber the bad ones', and 'I hope you find treatment that is effective for and accessible to you', and especially 'hey the fact that you are in pain sucks and I wish you weren't but I know that's not likely to change soon but also I hope that it will anyway because I hate to see people suffering and the 5-year-old inside me is insisting it's not fair even though the adult me knows that's not how it works but anyway the point is I hope you're in as little pain as it's possible for you to be in'. All of which is quite a bit harder to fit on a greeting card than 'get well soon', and which don't have any conveinent shorthands that will let me express those sentiments in a concise, understandable manner.

it’s crazy to me that every seed in existence is a little chemical computer taking readings of temperature and moisture and minerals and all that to see if it’s able to grow yet and they’re doing crazy stuff like going into full dormancy and waiting for species-specific conditions etc etc and some seeds will do this in the size of a dust particle (see: orobanche) and some will pack in extra starch and food and do it in the size of a coconut or something… just dissected this flower seed at work that was a woody two-compartment capsule with one embryo per compartment, the whole seed a little smaller than a dime, and I swear to god it had a full soybean’s worth of embryo and food packed in there. it’s just unfathomable to me

sometimes a seed strikes me as being like a little spaceship with on-board life support and stuff. all that’s inherently certain about a seed’s existence is that its parents survived nearby, presumably, so if all goes well it’ll be set up for some kind of success falling where it falls, but ideally the seed won’t see those exact conditions, because being too close could also hurt the seed’s chances of survival… as could being too far away, like if it ends up in a different habitat or ecosystem and the right conditions never happen. The whole food-on-board strategy was a huge buff when they patched it in after ferns and other spore-bearing plants, but it’s still basically outer space, right? Just deploying a hundred ships to different planets in the same star system, hoping it’s not so different down there that it’s unsurvivable? like every seed is a chance and different plants are putting different amounts of food, effort, and strategy into those chances. so you get a million different seeds from a million different species and they all look and act different from the ground up. you know what I mean, man. you know what I’m sayin
